SUMMER SCHOOL 2024
Happy Sun – Jupiter conjunction, an aspect that has been in the making for several days and which was exact yesterday evening BST –
Saturday 18 May
- Sun conjunct Jupiter 28 Taurus 19.47
This is an optimistic union that happens only once a year, with Venus following suit next week. I know I’m a biased Sagittarian and Jupiter is my planet, but as the “Greater Benefic” Jupiter represents so many positives. I’ve seen the results of Jupiter at work in other people’s charts and certainly good things have happened in my life under my own Jupiter transits.
This planet rules the 9th sign Sag/9th House and the 12th sign Pisces/12th House. On the list of the things he’s in charge of we find everything to do with overseas (Jupiter transiting my Sun when I came to Greece) and also higher mind learning/publishing (first book contract was Jupiter transiting my 9th House Moon).
I’ll be talking a lot more about the nature of Jupiter events in next week’s blog but for now you can see why we have the perfect celestial conditions for any plans relating to learning and/or travel.
The next fortnightly free newsletter is due out next weekend.
The Astrology Blog continues to go out every Monday, covering the astrology for the week ahead. Subscription is just over a pound a week, get in touch any time if you’d like to be added to the mailing. I can add you at this end, you don’t have to go through sign up boxes or PayPal if you prefer not to, or sign up on the homepage of the website.

WEDNESDAY 5 JUNE
Tarot & Astrology – with Joanna
Suitable for all Tarot levels – Beginners/Refreshers Astrology
https://joannawatters.com/course/tarot-and-astrology/

This is the third time of running this particular course and it’s the subject of my new book that’s due out 13 August, complete with its own deck of marvellously illustrated cards. The publishers Cico Books commissioned Brazilian artist Barbara Tamilin for the artwork.
Why use the two crafts together? Well, in essence, any client’s first question is, What’s going to happen? Any client’s second question is, When is it going to happen? As my interest in the tarot sprang directly from my astrological work, a lot of which focuses on how to master accurate timing with predictive techniques, I at first found it quite challenging to work with tarot alone.
Comparing spreads with the person’s horoscope and finding that the two reflect each other was a big turning point for me, both in content and in establishing time frames. The course material is designed to show you how two different crafts arrive at the same answers, and you’ll learn how the tarot can add information that astrology might miss and vice versa.
I always remember astrologer Maggie Hyde saying how she was aware of using a different part of her brain when doing tarot instead of astrology and I know exactly what she means. Is this what we call being psychic?
This course is suitable for all tarot levels, whether the cards are completely new to you or whether you already have some familiarity with the practice of tarot. We’ll be covering card meanings as we go along, especially in terms of how to interpret your cards within the context and framework of the questions being asked.
You’ll learn a variety of effective spreads, from an “overview” of someone’s life to easy spreads for specific questions, such as relationships, work or personal issues of all kinds.
With the astrology component you’ll be venturing into the world of horoscopy. You’ll learn the symbolism of the signs and planets, and how to look up the key astrology for each reading, adding another extremely powerful string to your predictive bow, especially for timings.
The course includes working on your own horoscope so please send me your data if you want to book a place so that I can prep your chart in advance.
WEDNESDAY 12 MAY
Questions, Questions – Horary Astrology with Elisabeth Brooke
https://joannawatters.com/course/answer-questions-horary-astrology/
I’m delighted as usual to welcome back Elisabeth, this time for her 7th consecutive year at the Summer School. Elisabeth is a personal goldmine of information and this is a brand new course, ideal for new or returning students. Please email Elisabeth directly if you have any questions about her course that are not covered in her writeup.
Elisabeth writes:
- Will I get the job?
- Should I buy this house?
- Is he having an affair?
- What is wrong with me?
- Who stole my parcel and where is it?
- Should I start my own business?
Did you know there was a whole branch of astrology related to answering questions? Horary astrology uses precise rules which can give yes or no answers to questions. Horary is a great addition to the astrologer’s toolkit as it provides both practical solutions and awareness into deeper motives. Horary techniques can give good timing measures, show directions, offer advice on decisions, and answer the real question a person is asking.
During the four-day course we will cover the following:
- The rules of Horary, if a chart is ‘radical or not’ and what the planets, signs and houses mean.
- Fixed stars, important degrees, time, distance and how to know when a chart cannot be read.
- Questions about property and houses.
- Questions about theft and loss.
- Questions about education.
- Questions about work, career, and status.
- Questions about health and which common remedies which are indicated.
No previous knowledge assumed. My classes are always mixed level which I have found an enriching format for both newcomers and those who have some knowledge as we can share not only our astrological knowledge but our life experience.
Students are encouraged to bring a question to the group which we will answer as a group. My teaching style is collaborative, there will be lots of opportunity for discussion and questions and the content will be aimed at the level of the student group.

How to do Readings – with Joanna
Intermediate Astrology
https://joannawatters.com/course/astrology-readings/
Astrology is a fascinating and lifelong journey. It’s the gift that carries on giving. But do you sometimes wonder if you’re going to be the eternal student? Have you been studying astrology on and off, or even continuously, for years but still find yourself up against the stumbling blocks of accurate interpretation? Or do you see what something means but find it hard to communicate the info? How do we connect astrologically with people who don’t know what we’re talking about?
This course will teach you how to zoom in on the workings of each individual horoscope. You’ll learn how to take a chart apart and put it back together again, and in the process I’ll be showing you how to explain and communicate your findings, even to someone who knows no astrology at all.
You’ll also learn how to use the Ephemerides quickly and effectively, going straight to the important dates in an individual’s life, for the past, present and future. You’ll learn how to pack all these natal and predictive components into a consultation time of an hour and a quarter.
We’ll be working on your own horoscope and students are also encouraged to bring along another horoscope, one that interests you or, with permission, one that you might already be preparing for someone known to you. From horoscopes we are taught!
The aim of the course then is to equip you with the tools for doing effective readings for others, whether it’s for your own enjoyment or for preparing to embark upon your own client work.

Unlocking the Secrets of Medieval Astrology – with Chris Mitchell
Suitable for all levels
The links to the course are on Chris’ website and mine –
https://almuten.co.uk/index.php/courses/
https://joannawatters.com/course/medieval-astrology-secrets/
I’m delighted to announce that Chris Mitchell is returning for the second year running. This was a hugely successful week last year and for new or returning students this is a wonderful opportunity to learn from Chris in the perfect setting.
Chris’s area of expertise is the history of astrology and he’s a tutor on the Cultural Astronomy and Astrology MA course at the University of Wales.
chrissouthville@gmail.com – please contact Chris directly if you have any questions about his course that are not covered in his writeup.
Chris writes:
As modern astrologers, we’re used to drawing up charts in seconds on a computer, and using numerous techniques, outer planet transits and a psychological language to work with our clients. Ours is a rich and subtle art. How, then, did medieval astrologers manage with just seven planets and five aspects? Was theirs simply a limited cut-down version of what we have available to us in modern astrology? How did a society rife with political intrigue and power struggles, and the Black Death, do meaningful astrology without Pluto?
In this course, we’ll discover some of the richness of medieval astrology. Despite the lack of outer planets and modern techniques, medieval astrologers had a surprisingly large toolkit of methods lost to modern astrology. The recent resurgence of modern translations of ancient texts means that these fascinating methods have been rediscovered and can be adapted to our modern lives too. Join us and find out how you can incorporate these rich techniques into your own studies or practice.
This medieval astrology course is suitable for beginners and experienced astrologers alike, and will demonstrate some of the richness of medieval astrology that you can put to use in your own charts. Here’s an outline of what we’ll be exploring – there are plenty of hands-on practical sessions in an informal and friendly setting:
DAY 1
Stories of the Sky: where does our astrology come from?
The Sky is our Canvas: find your way round the night sky, and why the zodiac is so important.
The Medieval Theatre: meet the cast – the planets.
DAY 2
Who’s in charge around here? Finding your strongest planet. Essential dignities, and a practical session.
Friends and enemies: medieval friendship, aspects, and orbs.
How did I end up in this situation? Accidental dignity, and a practical session.
DAY 3
Working together: reception and a practical.
Welcome to my humble abode: medieval houses.
Give us today our daily bread – Arabic Parts. Find your Part of Fortune.
What’s round the corner? Medieval prediction: profections, solar returns and practicals.
DAY 4
Mapping out your life: Firdaria, and a scary-sounding technique.
Putting it all together: How to do a medieval chart delineation for yourself and others.
As well as the sessions on the four study days, I’ll be making a detailed handout available for you to download when you get home, and we’ll have plenty of chances to socialise over a glass or two – and I’ll show you how to do a bit of “quick and dirty” medieval fortune telling!
FLIGHTS & ACCOMMODATION
The destination airport is Preveza (PVK) and the resort is Nidri, 45 mins transfer. No ferries involved as the island of Lefkada is joined to the mainland by a short causeway.
You can either book a package – such as the one mentioned at the top of this newsletter with Olympic Holidays – or you can book flight only and find your own accommodation. I have some options on my books, all info on request. I can also book airport transfer taxis.
- There are EASY JET direct flights from Gatwick, and from Bristol (Sundays only)
- There are no EASY JET direct flights from Manchester, Stansted or Luton.
- There are direct BRITISH AIRWAYS flights from Heathrow
- There are direct JET2 FLIGHTS & PACKAGES – from Stansted, Birmingham, and several other airports –
- https://www.jet2holidays.com/destinations/greece/lefkas
I’ve given up tracking flight prices for all the courses from all the airports as this is a very time consuming job and, more importantly, the prices change all the time. By far the best way to watch any particular flight of interest to you is to use Skyscanner. Just enter your dates and destination airport of PVK for all the options –
IF YOU BOOK FLIGHT ONLY – IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT BOOK ANY ACCOMMODATION WITHOUT RUNNING IT BY ME FIRST. BOOKING.COM IN PARTICULAR TELL FIBS! I NEED TO VOUCH FOR QUALITY AND LOCATION.
COURSE FEE
All courses are £375. If you’d like to do both of these courses there’s a 15% discount on the course fee for the second week.
Classes are held in my outdoor teaching area in the garden of my own home and comprise of 15 hours teaching time. The four study days finish at 3.00pm each day so that you have plenty of time to sunbathe, swim, siesta before meeting up again for the evening meals.
If you have a lot of questions or any special needs it’s so much less time consuming to talk rather than batting emails back and forth so I would encourage you to book a phone appointment with me, I’m on WhatsApp 00306976296085,
With thanks, love from Lefkada
Joanna

A SELECTION OF TESTIMONIALS – WHAT HAVE OTHER STUDENTS SAID?
To study with Joanna is an exclusive experience and on the beautiful Greek island of Lefkas too. This was one of the best courses I have ever done. Joanna is a fantastic teacher with a big heart and challenging ideas.
What a gift to learn how to accept myself and not have to apologise for myself anymore. I feel rejuvenated and I know where I’m going in life. The Greek experience has done wonders for me.
I loved this astrology course. Jo has taken the traditional method of teaching astrology and turned it on its head. She gave breadth to the subject, moving us through the building blocks as quickly as possible, until magically the glyphs started to sing and dance. She also has a very friendly relationship with the local tavernas! Such fun and healing too.
Enlightening. Educational. Fun! Would definitely recommend any of Jo’s courses. They are life changing.
I had forgotten that there are places like Nidri in the world. The perfect place to learn, beautiful scenery, stunning views. You really couldn’t ask for more! Thank you Jo for making my time in Greece such a joy.
