31 December 2012 – New Year astrology

Well here we are at the end of another year. As we make the transition Mercury, planet of the mind, steals the limelight, moving into Capricorn this afternoon. The ingress is exact at 14.04 GMT and his first aspect will be a sextile (harmonious) to Neptune in Pisces tomorrow morning. As this is the time of year for making resolutions this is a perfect astrological picture –

  • Mercury – planet of decisions, thoughts, ideas and communication of all kinds – what we think, we become
  • Capricorn – one of Saturn’s signs, planet of structure and purpose. Capricorn is the Mountain Goat, associated with ambition, slowly but sure footedly making its way up the mountainside
  • Neptune – planet of dreams, mysticism, compassion and the imagination, now powerful in his own sign of Pisces, a water sign renowned for sensitivity and powerful instincts

This picture makes me think about the importance of balance. It’s no good having a dream if we never find a way to action it. It is of little value feeling sympathy for someone – or the world – if we don’t find a practical way to help. An unbalanced life is one which is all work but it’s also one which is aimless or unproductive. If we want to capture the New Year astrological vibe my feeling is that we should take a good long look at what really matters to us, rather than what others might say should matter to us. As I read the other day (sorry don’t have the writer’s name) – “happiness lies at the crossroads between pleasure and meaning”.

May all your New Year resolutions fill you with purpose, motivation and joy! And wherever you are celebrating tonight have fun and stay safe,

24 December 2012 – This week’s Astrology

Well, we’re still here then!

Of course, the humourists have been at work with “it’s not the end of the world” jokes. This has made me think about two things – one, that humour is so important. This is not to disrespect anyone’s troubles but, in terms of the much loved phrase “a positive attitude”, the ability to put an amusing spin on life’s challenges can often make the difference between coping or not. Secondly, clients coming for consultations nearly always fear “bad news” yet bad news (difficult things)/good news (easy things) are the two sides of the same coin and such is the stuff of life.

This week’s astrology is no exception. It’s an easy start to the week, and I especially like the fact that the Moon sails through light hearted and playful Gemini throughout Christmas Day, with the Moon – Jupiter conjunction exact at 00.19 GMT on the 26th. If you have clear skies on Christmas night you’ll see Jupiter blazing away next to a nearly Full Moon. Make a wish! In fact, make two! Jupiter rules good fortune and in Gemini, sign of the Twins, it’s the perfect time for doubling up.

Mars also changes sign, about an hour later, moving into Aquarius. Note that this is not a water sign – only the sign of the Water Bearer. Aquarius is an air sign, element of the mind, and its strengths are questioning, analysis, logic and objectivity. In short, every dream needs an action plan and the “how to” is an increasingly important theme as we travel into the New Year.

This is underlined by the Full Moon in Cancer (exact at 10.22 GMT on Friday). All Full Moons illuminate or bring things full cycle and as this one lights up the Sun/Saturn/Pluto relationship you may have to work with the bad before you get to the good. in other words, something’s “gotta give” or be radically overhauled to pave the way to an improvement. Such challenges may feel like “bad news”, especially when facing up to something we fear, but the moments of very deep insight are also a gift.

Have a wonderful Christmas and CLICK BELOW for the link to this week’s column:

Well here it is, the week of the Big Prophecy. There are trillions of words out there on the internet about 21 December 2012 and it’s not within the scope of this blog to explore the many interpretations. They boil down to the dawning of a new spiritual era, or apocalyptic doomsday end of the world events. I read recently that some people, especially children, have even had to receive counseling to allay their fears about the latter, which is saddening. I am not an expert on the Mayan calendar but, as an astrologer, I am most definitely anti irresponsible alarmism.

My prediction for this week? The world is not going to end. I feel very safe in making this pronouncement because if it does end then we won’t be around to discuss it, and if it doesn’t then I’ll be proved right. Lol.

Seriously, back to the real point of this blog which is to pinpoint the astrological themes of the week. Mercury is opposing Jupiter today, signalling an “excess” factor. Whatever Jupiter touches, he expands, and as Mercury rules everything to do with communication it’s the perfect day to send out all your Xmas greetings, write cards, emails, and generally get in touch. Discussions are in there too – something may need a lot of debate – but just guard against exaggeration or rash commitments.

Wednesday brings the Venus – Uranus trine – weird, whacky and possibly wonderful. Although the trine is a harmonious aspect, and Venus of course is love and pleasure, just note that Uranus is all about unpredictability. Friday is the long awaited Winter Solstice as the Sun moves into Capricorn (11.13 GMT). The Sun’s first aspect is an easy one to Neptune in his own sign of Pisces but the event is also flanked by an awkward Jupiter – Saturn – Pluto dance that plays out into Saturday. Again, watch out for that over-the-top element or events that won’t fully make sense until a later date.

This line up is a reminder that this is a sensitive time of year for a lot of people. Look after yourself as well as looking out for those you care about, and enjoy a festive week.

10 December 2012 – This week’s Astrology

As you may recall Mercury turned direct two weeks ago after being retrograde from 6 – 26 November. This week Mercury enters Sagittarius for the second time (in the early hours of tomorrow morning), an important part of quite a complex pattern. Here’s the sequence in bullet points:

  • Mercury enters Sagittarius and squares Neptune at 0 degrees Pisces 29 October
  • Mercury reaches 4 degrees of Sagittarius and then turns retrograde 6 November
  • Mercury squares Neptune for the second time 14 November
  • Mercury backtracks into Scorpio also on 14 November
  • Mercury turns direct at 18 degrees of Scorpio 26 November
  • Mercury re-enters Sagittarius and squares Neptune for the third and final time 11 December
  • Mercury returns to 4 degrees of Sagittarius (the degree at which he originally turned retrograde) 14 December
  • Mercury trines (positive aspect) Uranus at 4 degrees of Aries 14 December

In other words, whatever complex issue started at the end of October is now only just heading for resolution. In the interim any such issue will have been further complicated by all the usual retrograde Mercury ingredients – such as indecision, uncertainty, dishonesty or wrong information – but with bells on!

The opposite picture is now unfolding as Mercury’s last piece of action this week is the trine to Uranus – planet of sudden or unexpected events – who turns direct midday Thursday, within hours of the New Moon in Sagittarius, sign of truth and justice. This smacks of dramatic turnarounds/surprising or rebellious turn of events/the truth outs/hot off the press news… you get the picture.

As above, so below. In world news terms this picture feels very much like a flashpoint for any sensitive political situation, especially where democracy and rights are at stake, such as Egypt and Syria. You may also like to note that the “Frankenstorm” that hit the east coast of America happened on 29 October – these last six weeks must have been a nightmare for many in terms of putting the damage straight and working out insurance claims.

In personal terms I would suggest that this is a week to sweep away doubt and work with what you know is right. My fellow Sagittarian Lena Hjeltman therapist extraordinaire once told me something I’ve never forgotten – “no matter how hard it might be, something magical happens when you connect with the truth.” Wise words Lena!

3 December 2012 – This week’s Astrology

Hi everyone

Every now and then there’s a very quiet week astrologically and this is one of them. No major aspects, no New or Full Moon, no planet changing sign. The main event is that Mercury spends the week getting back up to full speed after the recent retrograde period and it’s his last week in Scorpio (moving on into Sagittarius early next week). Whatever has been on a “go slow” or whatever situation has been characterized by hidden agendas/complex emotional issues should now be presenting increasingly obvious solutions.

Have a great week and CLICK BELOW for the link to this week’s column on Avon Connects:
