WHAT’S COMING UP THIS WEEK?
RETROGRADE VENUS
Now preparing the blog for the coming week and there are some big events going on. Venus is about two thirds of the way through her retrograde loop and the week starts with Venus picking up the second of three squares to Jupiter.
This is textbook for second chances as both planets here are the Benefics (they benefit us), reflected in their job descriptions as they’re in charge of love, luck, opportunity, money, travel and life’s pleasures. When there’s any series of three contacts – universally, like this one, or a three-legged transit to one of your natal planets – the middle one is often the most important. During her protracted stay in Leo, Venus is squaring up to Jupiter and Uranus three times.
Not sure as yet which horoscopes I’ll do but the retrograde Venus is showing very strongly in a variety of other ways, especially when you consider that Jupiter also rules justice/all things legal and Uranus links to the drama of shocks. I’m definitely getting the sense of retrograde Venus being our chance to set the record straight in some way.
33 year old Lucy Letby who has just been found guilty of the serial murder of babies under her nursing care has a natal retrograde Venus, but no time of birth for her so there’s a limit in terms of seeing how her chart hangs together, but I’ll see what I can make of it. A chilling subject, what’s the psychology?
Also the subject of revenge porn is in the news in stories of prosecution and the victims being compensated to the tune of millions. Both of these stories are Venus gone wrong to the extreme.
A video currently doing the rounds on Facebook of an interview with a lady called Kamla Bhasin (pictured), who passed away a couple of years ago, is another example of rescuing a gone wrong Venus. Kamla Bhasin was an Indian developmental feminist activist, poet, author and social scientist and her topic in this interview is the “honour” of a woman in the eyes of Indian culture in connection to rape.
She’s utterly compelling and wonderful to watch. She has the audience, women and men, in the palm or her hand and she has the art of the rhetorical question down to perfection –
When I’m raped, people say I lost my honour. How did I lose my honour? My honour is not in my vagina. It is a patriarchal idea that my rape will defile the honour of my community.

WHAT ELSE IS COMING UP THIS WEEK?
MARS FINAL ASPECTS WHILE IN VIRGO – Mars links to Neptune and Pluto before changing sign at the end of the week, moving into Libra on Sunday, a new cycle that will be especially important for relationship issues of all kinds.
SUN INTO VIRGO/MERCURY TURNS RETROGRADE – We enter the Virgo time of year on Wednesday, and on the same day Mercury switches to retrograde also in Virgo. This will last for the usual three weeks. The Sun’s first aspect will be a tough opposition to Saturn next weekend.
RISING SIGNS – LIBRA & SCORPIO
Here are the next 2 signs in my series of interpretations on the signs when seen on the Ascendant. These are taken from my book Essential Astrology which has just been relaunched by Cico Books –
With love from Greece
Joanna
LIBRA
With a Libra Ascendant, regardless of the Sun sign, the ruling planet of the horoscope is Venus. This planet’s sign and house will be a primary consideration in the process of interpretation.
Libra Ascendant/or Venus in any sign in the First House:
Physical characteristics: often an indication of beauty, symmetrical and softly modeled features, usually a straight nose, a full or well shaped mouth, sometimes dimples in the chin or cheeks, pleasant and kindly expression, often look younger than their years.
Manner and speech: can come across as passive, indifferent, easygoing or charming. Mostly the nature is extremely amiable, polite and softly spoken as individuals with this rising sign or a first house Venus are naturals at engaging with others and would rather walk on hot coals than deliberately give offence. In this respect they tend not to air their personal views too soon or too energetically. Similarly, they are the first to placate others and to trouble shoot from a viewpoint of fairness and justice.
Health: physical well being rests largely on a balanced diet and emotional equilibrium. Prone to kidney problems, diabetes or vacillating energy, sometimes related to highly sensitive blood sugar levels.
Famous Libra Ascendants:
- Barry Gibb
- Beyonce
- Britney Spears
- Denzel Washington
- Jennifer Aniston
- Jennifer Lopez
- JFK
- Leonardo di Caprio
- Mahatma Gandhi
- Omar Sharif
SCORPIO
With a Scorpio Ascendant, regardless of the Sun sign, the ruling planet of the horoscope is Mars, with Pluto as the co-ruler. These planets’ signs and houses will be a primary consideration in the process of interpretation.
Scorpio Ascendant/or Mars or Pluto in any sign in the First House:
Physical characteristics: overt or subtle sexiness, chiseled features, beautiful eyes, often with a hypnotic or penetrating “x-ray” quality, frequently a slightly raised bridge to the nose, a brooding expression and often heavy brows in the men.
Manner and speech: can come across as reserved, private, formidable or fascinating. They have phenomenal reserves of determination and the approach to life and relationships in particular is intense, emotional and profound. Individuals with this rising sign, and especially a first house Pluto, need to forge deep connections and tend to give short shrift to those deemed to be flippant or superficial. New faces and situations are put through remorseless screening and they attach great importance to their first impressions. Usually these are uncannily correct.
Health: Mostly resilient with exceptional powers of recuperation from illness or from over doing things. Prone to problems with the reproductive or excretory systems.
Famous Scorpio Ascendants:
- Clint Eastwood
- Diana Ross
- Grace Kelly
- Michael Douglas
- Nicole Kidman
- Putin
- Rafael Nadal
- Sigmund Freud
- Sigmund Freud
- Taylor Swift
