SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS – THE ASTROLOGY OF SOBRIETY
Born 31 December 1937

Anthony Hopkins turns 88 today, New Year’s Eve. He has Venus, Mercury, Sun and Ascendant all in this sign. Liking getting old doesn’t of course belong just to Capricorns but it’s a Saturnian hallmark.
His film career took off when he appeared in The Silence of the Lambs as the chilling Hannibal Lecter. The movie came out in 1991 but Hopkins was cast in September 1989, exact date not recorded, but it was when Jupiter (opportunity, good fortune, growth) was in Cancer, like now, and travelled from 5 to 9 degrees of Cancer in that month.
His natal degree placings are Venus 0, Mercury 6, Sun 9, so yet again an example of a natal Sun – Mercury conjunction in the chart of a famous actor. The “natal promise” is there (what he was destined to do) and the transit (Jupiter) brought it to life. Jupiter over his Venus at 00.58 Cancer (4 August) would have been at the time when he first read the script and said it was the best part he’d ever seen, and that he knew just how to play it. Whenever you see a transit over another planet at 0 degrees it’s a big moment. With Jupiter it’s often what appears to be the lucky break, but is of course destiny.
The movie was released 14 February 1991. Saturn (changes sign once every two and a half years) had just moved into Aquarius the week before and was heading for his Jupiter – in the 1st House of the self, at 2 Aquarius. Saturn transits are extra important for Capricorns.
For co-star Jodie Foster (19 November 1962) it was her Saturn Return, natal Saturn at 6 Aquarius. They both won Oscars. For Anthony Hopkins it was a record as the part was only 16 minutes of screen time, the shortest ever to win an Academy Award.
A 29 Pisces Story – 29 December 1975
Anthony Hopkins has his natal Saturn at 29 Pisces, a critical degree, last degree of the zodiac and the position of Scheat, a Fixed Star associated with disaster, especially either through anything marine (Neptune is on this degree now, there was a Christmas Day tragedy in Devon in the UK of swimmers being drowned) or anything related to drink/drugs. Marilyn Monroe had Uranus on 29 Pisces.
Exactly 50 years ago Hopkins went to Alcoholics Anonymous, after years of destructive behaviour but with the tipping point being a terrifying incident when he’d woken up in a hotel room in Arizona with no memory of how he got there. He’d been drink driving and realised that he could have killed himself or others. He’s been sober ever since.
On 29 December 1975, two days before his birthday –
- The Sun was at 6 Capricorn (on his Mercury, there’s the illumination, the light bulb moment)
- Mercury was on his Ascendant (beginning of the 1st House of the physical body, there’s the decision)
- Capricorn’s planet Saturn was in the middle of a long three-legged transit opposite his natal Jupiter, making the second and retrograde opposition. Textbook stuff – Saturn is NO, Jupiter is YES, Saturn opposite Jupiter says stop enjoying yourself through excess and addiction
- Lunations act as testimony and confirmation. 1 January 1976 – just three days later a New Moon at 10 Capricorn, conjunct his natal Sun (health/life) 9 Capricorn
