SUN VENUS/MARS – DOUBLE CAZIMI/COMBUST
Let’s start with the rules of traditional craft. If another planet is conjunct – placed next to – the Sun to within seven and a half degrees, and in the same sign, then that other planet is said to be combust. This means that it is weakened by its closeness to the Sun, whose powerful rays can burn and overwhelm. Eg, Sun at 10 degrees of Aries, conjunct Mercury at 15 degrees of Aries, places Mercury conjunct the Sun by 5 degrees and he is therefore combust.
Any planet within 17 degrees of the Sun is said to be under sunbeams and is thus somewhat weakened, but far less than a combust planet. Eg Sun at 10 degrees of Aries and Mercury at 25 degrees of Aries places Mercury 15 degrees away from the Sun, and he is therefore under sunbeams.
However, if a planet conjuncts the Sun to within 17 minutes (just over a quarter of a degree) it is then said to be cazimi. In this position the other planet becomes extremely powerful by being in the heart of the Sun, sucking up all that solar energy instead of being burned up by it. Eg Sun at 10 degrees and 30 minutes of Aries, Mercury at 10 degrees and 20 minutes of Aries, places Mercury within 10’ of the Sun and he is therefore cazimi.
However, just because a planet is combust (as Venus and Mars will be this week) doesn’t necessarily strip away all the positive qualities. A Sun – Venus conjunction is still an illumination of Venusian concerns, anything from love through to life’s comforts and pleasures. But it might come with a price tag, such as feeling slightly overshadowed by someone or reining things in after Xmas overspending. We must never forget that Venus rules the cash as well as romance.
In the blog the week before Christmas I commented that Venus was currently following the Sun very closely, the two travelling side by side until eventually coming together 6 January at 16 Capricorn. I added that I’d only just realized how long they stay within 8 degrees of each other. To illustrate that point, any child born between 11 December 2025 to 9 February 2026 will have a Sun – Venus conjunction in their horoscope.
THE CAZIMI/COMBUST HOURS
You can look back on past Sun – Venus conjunctions to see what happened, assuming you have a good memory for dates or a diary! These happen only once a year, or sometimes twice a year if Venus makes a retrograde loop, as will happen next year. Here are the conjunctions to look back on and going forwards –
- 4 June 2024 – 14 Gemini
- 23 March 2025 – 2 Aries
- 6 January 2026 – 16 Capricorn
- 24 October 2026 – 0 Scorpio (Venus retrograde)
- 12 August 2027 – 19 Leo
- 1 June 2028 – 11 Gemini
Mars has a 2 year cycle so the Sun – Mars conjunctions are correspondingly less frequent –
- 8 October 2021 – 15 Libra
- 18 November 2023 – 25 Scorpio
- 9 January 2026 – 19 Capricorn
- 21 March 2028 – 1 Aries
You may already have some context unfolding for these big moments. Mine is my final book deadline. This is the sweetness of getting over the finishing line and invoicinge the publishers for my “completion of text” payment. All of Capricorn sits in my 2nd House of personal finances.
Pay close attention to the events that unfold during the cazimi hours, especially if you have natal planets or Angles at or very close to the degrees of the conjunctions. Here are the finer details, times in GMT –
Sun conjunct Venus 16.22 Capricorn
- Cazimi starts at approx. 09.00 today, Monday 5 January
- Cazimi ends at approx. 20.00 Wednesday 7 January
Sun conjunct Mars 19.13 Capricorn
- Cazimi starts at approx. 08.00, Thursday 8 January
- Cazimi ends at approx. 18.00 Saturday 10 January
In the middle of all of that of course we have the Venus – Mars conjunction at 18 Capricorn, so it’s a very tightly choreographed dance between the three bodies. With Jupiter joining in from the end of the week then there may well be a link between events that start now and which develop further over the weekend. I’ll be doing feedback on this astrology in next week’s blog.
