SCORPIO
Let’s dive straight into the deep waters of Scorpio. Here’s my write up on this complex sign from my book Essential Astrology – https://tinyurl.com/2tpttrxf
These observations apply especially to the Sun in this sign but will also resonate with you if you have the Ascendant or personal planets in Scorpio. Personal planets are the first 7, the earlier in the list the more noticeable the links to the symbolism of the sign will be –
Sun – Moon – Mercury – Venus – Mars – Jupiter – Saturn
Outer planets are all much slower moving and are called modern, generational (everyone born within a few years of you will have the same) or trans-saturnians (the ones that come after Saturn) –
Chiron – Uranus – Neptune – Pluto
SPOT THE SCORPIO
Scorpios exude a powerful charisma but this goes hand in hand with being mysterious and secretive. As the sign of fixed water they are either the “still waters run deep” type, bewitching but unfathomable, with dark brown or nearly black eyes, or they present the frozen, glacial front, often with startling light or ice blue eyes. Many Scorpio women in particular have that “ice-maiden” type beauty. Both types and both sexes are expert at the deadpan expression that gives absolutely nothing away. In the rare moments that you catch them off guard, or without their beloved sunglasses, you’ll notice that the Scorpio eyes are piercing and mesmerizing, even hypnotic. Many exude a sultry sexuality and favour the colour black. In social situations they tend not to take the lead, preferring to observe and test the water first. First impressions are of someone restrained, thoughtful, private and unreadable.
THE SCORPIO NATURE
There is nothing meek and mild about this sign. Even if they come across as easygoing or flippant don’t be fooled. Emotional intensity is the hallmark of the Scorpio nature and they rarely register indifference, to anything or anyone. You can often sense hidden depths and an iron will behind the mask, and when they fix you with that intense, probing gaze you have good reason to feel slightly uncomfortable. Very little escapes their notice and if you feel as if your every word is being analyzed it’s because it is. A Scorpio loves nothing better than to find out what makes you tick but at first it’s a one way street. It takes time to get to know a Scorpio to the extent of being allowed into their private world in return.
What about that famous scorpion’s sting in the tail? There is a vengeful side to this sign, but it’s usually saved for when their jealousy is inflamed or when they feel deeply wounded or wronged. The whole gamut of feelings from love to hate runs deep and they can be fiercely loyal or unforgiving with equal purple passion.
LOVE & RELATIONSHIPS
Scorpios have a reputation for being sex mad and this sign tends to have a higher than average libido. Scorpio rules the whole life and death cycle, hence the connection to regeneration and procreation, and in the search for a mate they are not beneath exploiting their sex appeal to the full. The men of this sign have a highly charged sexual magnetism and many of the women are straight out of the classic “femme fatale” mould. Think Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind. As one Hollywood documentary described her, “She taught us how to flirt”.
Scorpios take everything seriously and their love life is no exception. Generally there are no half measures. They may be capable of strings of affairs but, when it comes to genuine commitment, they are the least likely sign to settle for anything less than the real deal. The same applies to friendships and they are more likely to have a few select and very close soul mates than a wide circle of superficial acquaintances. They would rather stay single than get hitched to someone they cannot love with mind, body and soul. This is fortuitous as the wrong relationship for Scorpios can be the source of utter misery. Conversely, any kind of unhappiness or rejection can trigger their own capability of becoming destructive, controlling or cruel.
VOCATION
Traditionally ruled by Mars, planet of action and war, this sign is forceful, determined and extremely persistent. Power and control are central issues for Scorpio and they get a massive kick out of achievement, especially of the “against all odds” variety. Tell them that something can’t be done and they will be the first to set out to prove that it can. This may sound supremely competitive but in truth Scorpios are often more in competition with themselves than with anyone else.
Scorpios are at their best when doing a job they feel passionate about but they also need a long leash. They don’t thrive when constrained by rules and regulations, particularly those that are designed to keep them in the position of humble employee. Scorpios do not do subservience. They would rather be broke.
Scorpio’s redemption is to be found in the nature of their co-ruler Pluto, commonly referred to as the planet of transformation, which is also captured in their symbol of the phoenix. In real terms Scorpios embody this death and rebirth imagery through their endurance and survival skills. It is not uncommon for a Scorpio to end one way of life, to walk away and start again, often totally from scratch and often more than once. They are not unduly attached to their material world, although they are quite capable of amassing wealth if only because money is power.
As god of the underworld Pluto also links Scorpio to the realms of the unconscious and death. Depth psychology, psychoanalysis, detective work, healing and psychic practices all belong to this sign, as does the work of surgeons, forensic scientists, hospice workers, bereavement counselors and undertakers.
HEALTH
Scorpio rules elimination and all bodily outlets, the reproductive system and the sexual organs, and all illnesses or afflictions associated with these parts of the body. Promiscuity is problematic for this sign, not just because of their susceptibility to STD’s but also because of their emotional vulnerability that they hide so well. The women often struggle with problems related to menstruation, fertility and menopause.
Stress management too is important for this sign. They are prone to taking the kind of risks that most people would avoid like the plague and also do not suffer fools gladly. Scorpios have to learn and acquire the “live and let live” tolerance of their opposite sign of safety loving Taurus.
In a nutshell: determined, forceful, thorough, intense, passionate, resourceful
TEXTBOOK SCORPIOS

VENUS – the LOVE & MONEY GODDESS
As I was saying in the blog recently Venus’ change of sign was a welcome one, taking Venus out of one of her signs of detriment (Scorpio) and into Sagittarius. With the exception of the Moon (who spends two and a half days in each sign throughout a month) this is our first showing of the element of fire since Venus left Leo 5 August and the Sun left Leo 22 August.
Also have you ever noticed how consecutive signs work as opposites? The shift from Scorpio (dark, mysterious, secretive, highly focused, intense etc) to Sagittarius (open, instantly friendly, heart on sleeve, optimistic, wide ranging etc) is an obvious example. Sag is like a reaction against everything that Scorpio stands for.
Like the Sun, both Mercury and Venus spend a year going through each sign, but you can’t just divide their trips into twelve equal periods of time because of their backwards and forwards motion created by the retrograde loops –
- Mercury is retrograde for three weeks at a time, three times a year
- Venus is retrograde approx. every 18 – 20 months, for approx. 42 days
- Mars is retrograde once every 25 months for between 65 to 80 days (next retrograde loop imminent, see more below in weekly blog info section)
This year Venus entered Sagittarius 17 October and is now a third of the way through this sign, will enter the next sign of Capricorn 11 November.
During this time we can expect hallmarks of this combination to show in our own world in and in the world at large. Here’s my write up on Venus in Sag as a natal placing, ie as seen in a birth chart.
VENUS IN SAGITTARIUS
Venus in Jupiter’s masculine sign is a free spirit and an open book. What you see is what you get. They don’t play games and they get confused, impatient or bored with those who do. When they give their heart away, which they do easily and enthusiastically, their loyalty, fidelity and total belief in their loved one follow automatically.
In this respect there is a naivety with this Venus. These individuals often go through all kinds of romantic experiences and their share of crushing disappointments before learning that love does, at least sometimes, need common sense as well as faith.
When unhappy they can be prone to promiscuity and disastrous affairs but generally their innate optimism enables them to bounce back and move on. Of all the Venus signs this is probably the least likely to end up embittered.
Freedom is a big issue. These Venus people do not equate needing space with a lack of commitment and being with a partner who wants to be joined at the hip is usually a claustrophobic disaster. Clinging vines need not apply. They can do unconventional relationships as long as the trust is there.
They also need an intellectual equal, someone who loves to exchange ideas and philosophize. A partner with good financial skills helps too as their own approach to money and all things practical can be rather unrealistic, especially in their younger years.
Being attracted to someone from another culture as a life partner, especially the men, is a common occurrence for this Venus. British David Bowie’s first wife Angie was American, his second wife Iman is Somali.
In a nutshell: honest, trusting, unrestrained.

THE WEEKLY BLOG
The coming week is dominated by the Scorpio themes –
- The Sun at his steady one degree a day covers 5 to 12 degrees of Scorpio
- Mercury’s on his last week of being at top speed and is on the last leg of the journey through Scorpio, covers 21 to 30 degrees of this sign
- On the way Mercury makes a string of aspects to Uranus, Neptune, and then to Scorpio’s ruling planets Mars and Pluto
- These are wrapped around the New Moon at 9 Scorpio
- Mars and Pluto themselves meet up by opposition – an event that happens just once every two years
- Mars covers just 3 degrees this week, from 27 Cancer to 0 Leo – slowing down in readiness for the next retrograde loop (6 December to 24 February)
- Pluto is extra weighty right now, being SD – Stationary Direct – having turned around at the end of Capricorn for the last time (12 October) and is very slowly picking up speed again, will move into Aquarius for the third and final time 19 November
- The lighter thread – hurray – is Venus covering 12 – 20, opposing Jupiter in Gemini at the end of the week
- Jupiter now retrograde is heading back to align with Chiron for the second of three times

What does it mean to have a reading? Every astrologer works differently but when I do readings I enter fully into that person’s world. I work with every horoscope as if it were my own, which am quite sure my clients would vouch for. What do I think the astrology is telling us, what would I do in this person’s position, what are the sensitive dates and timelines coming up?
Ahead of the reading you receive a hand drawn copy of your horoscope. You don’t have to understand all the hieroglyphics if you’re new to astrology, and you don’t have to understand anything about your chart at all, but it helps to have the visual in front of us. I explain the relevant bits as we go along.
There’s a lot of prep involved in a professional astrology reading, ahead of the actual consultation time. For this reason I stick to my rule of doing no more than one reading a day. I’m then able to give that person my full concentration.

These readings are 2 hours and are purely predictive, so we don’t work on things like personality characteristics or past events. We focus completely on the things that are unfolding in your life right now and on what is indicated by the astrological activity for the coming year.
Our natal chart is the frozen moment of time, the starting point for everything, but it’s how everything moves on from the point of birth that reveals to us our life events, our relationships, our purpose and so on.
So we look at your natal chart “in action” and in detail – transits, of the slower outer planets and also the lists of dates of the transits of the Sun and the personal planets, the progressed chart, lunations (New and Full Moons, Eclipses) and anything else considered relevant to your horoscope for the year ahead.
