29 October 2012 – This week’s Astrology

Hi everyone

Well the week doesn’t get off to the easiest of starts, which will sound like the understatement of the year if you live on the other side of the pond. This mailing goes out to readers in many different countries, including America, and there are at least three of you known to me in NYC, a city that will be waking up to lockdown as Hurricane Sandy meets up with winter storm fronts – Diane, Jen and Megan please take care.

The impending “Frankenstorm” is the out of control monster created by nature and it’s impossible not to think about the death/rebirth and horror movie genre symbolism wrapped up in the current astrology. Saturn will of course be travelling through Scorpio for the next couple of years but it’s always the ingress, the beginning of the journey, that is most interesting to astrologers. How does the shift make itself felt? In these first few weeks it’s been noticeable in many ways and a lot of things suddenly seem to be about time itself, symbolically appropriate as Saturn is known as the Lord of Time, ruling ageing, clocks, and Father Time himself.

Also the textbook Scorpio subjects of sex, death, power, secrets and subterfuge are there in abundance. Veteran news reporter John Simpson was quoted as saying that the BBC sex scandals were the worst to surface in 50 years, the then revolutionary The Joy of Sex marks its 40th anniversary and is reissued with the subtitle The Timeless Guide to Lovemaking, and the 23rd James Bond movie marks 50 years since Sean Connery made his sexy secret agent super spy debut in 1962. Now America is facing a mega-storm that is forecast to create havoc to tens of millions of people across 800 miles of the East Coast and has the potential to be the largest storm ever to hit the States. Many of these news items are ongoing.

Saturn in Scorpio is the “backdrop”. Back to the details of this week – Mercury arrived in galloping Sagittarius early this morning and is on an instant collision course with Neptune (Poseidon) in Pisces (the sign that rules all things marine). This aspect does rather sum up the idea of “deluge” (exact today at 17.41 GMT, lunchtime America). Throw in a Full Moon (today 19.51 GMT) in conflict with Saturn – it’s enough to paint a picture of evacuation for thousands of people.

For the second half of the week Venus is the troublemaker, in conflict with the outer planets of Uranus (dramatic change) and then Pluto (endings/rebuilding).

To sum up, as above – so below. The news stories are the bigger picture but also the personal story of many individuals. To personalize the astrology in your own world what are the bigger changes already going on/or that need to be made? What are you afraid of? Why is it so scary to rock the boat or do you allow feelings to swamp you? Are you “reactive” (deal with it when it happens) or “proactive” (plan ahead)? What do you need to do to get out of the path of your own hurricane? Food for thought!

8 October 2012 – This week’s Astrology

The Scorpio/Pluto theme continues and is the dominant theme until Thursday. This can be tricky stuff. Scorpio – sign of emotional intensity, deep seated issues, and the use/abuse of power and control are just some of the characteristics that can give this sign a bad name. Similarly, Scorpio’s co-ruling planet Pluto is often portrayed as the devil himself, being god of the underworld. In mythology his notoriety is linked to the abduction of Persephone. Wrapped up with both the sign and the planet then is the whole subject of sex – as the source of rebirth/healing or as the source of great evil. As above, so below. You’ve only got to look at the news right now to read about missing little April Jones, the “rebirth” of Ian Brady and the sordid stories around Scorpio Jimmy Savile to see the dark side of these themes at work.

In terms of your own day to day dealings note that Scorpio/Pluto symbolism often links into secrets and silences or victim behavior. The best possible interpretation of the current picture is to recognize the transformational potential of personal courage and responsibility, the importance of self awareness and the triumph of this over fear. Don’t allow yourself to be controlled or intimidated! The other best showing for these themes is healing, emotional or physical, through the power of words or self love.

On a lighter note – thankfully! – Mars has now exited Scorpio and is starting a journey through adventurous Sagittarius. Travelling, planning for the future and any project linked to learning/education gets a big tick.

1 October 2012 – This week’s Astrology

This is what I call a transitional week. Jupiter – planet of hope, good fortune and wide horizons – is now turning retrograde, and will be backtracking until the end of next January. This doesn’t mean that all good things go on hold until the New Year, but it does mean that plans for the future could meet an interesting twist in the road. Unfolding events may introduce a factor that leads to looking at longer term issues in a new light, especially as Jupiter turns retrograde in Gemini, sign of the Twins, which often signals choices. Focus on your “re” words – review, revise, rethink, rewind… Travel, legal and educational concerns all need special re-consideration.

Jupiter’s direct opposite is Saturn – planet of work, effort and responsibility – and he’s in the news big time, changing sign for the first time in three years. Saturn moves into intense and powerful Scorpio on Friday (21.34 BST) and will be trekking through this sign until September 2015. Mmm, life suddenly seems to be taking a turn for the serious but this doesn’t mean that it has to be heavy going. On the contrary, I would suggest that a deep appraisal of your true needs, desires and goals is extremely timely. Saturn’s bigger picture message is that nothing can be built and truly valued without commitment… and how can you put commitment before passion? It has to be the other way around.

As above, so below, so by “coincidence” rather than design am just reading Stephen Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, a book which truly captures this astrological vibe and making me “re-think” certain ideas in a fascinating way. Thank you to Jeryl for the recommendation!

24 September 2012 – This week’s Astrology

As you know by now the Uranus – Pluto square has been dominating the astrological news. Just to summarise, the second of 7 contacts was exact last week, the third contact won’t be until May of next year. At the weekend the Sun will oppose Uranus and square Pluto, and the Full Moon then falls at 7 degrees Aries, exactly conjunct Uranus and square Pluto. In other words, the themes of this major aspect will be re-invoked and illuminated. If you’re dealing with any ongoing situation that reflects the “earthquake” symbolism – shock, upheaval, the unexpected, news that has sent shockwaves rippling through your life or your community, big life changes etc – then this coming weekend is likely to mark a landmark/light bulb moment – a significant link in the chain of events still unfolding. The bigger message is not to be sucked into any whirlpool of drama but to find your footholds and deal with one thing at a time.

Along the way we have a harmonious and helpful Mercury – Jupiter link on Wednesday – exact at 15.10 BST. This is the classic “good news” contact and it’s also fantastic for doing deals or making agreements/inspired decisions that will change life for the better. All matters linked to negotiation, education, travel, legal concerns and publishing get an especially big tick.

This week’s Astrology – 17 September 2012

If ever there was a time for looking for the deeper meaning this week is it. The awkward dance of the two outer planets – Uranus and Pluto – continues as they square up to each other for the second time. The first square was 24 June of this year and, rather overwhelmingly, this contact happens a total of 7 times, the final contact being mid March 2015. These outer planets tend to act as the global backdrop to social, political and financial reform, often through anarchic or dramatic events, but for some this kind of change will also play out in the personal arena. For now, if you have planets/angles at around 7 degrees of the cardinal signs of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn then you are more likely to experience your own life changing events.

It may sound contradictory for an astrologer to talk about living in the moment but given the Uranus/Pluto “panic factor” I feel very strongly that it’s worth finding that quiet space inside you even if everything else has stopped making any sense!
