Consultations

I’m in London 18 December for ten days. I have 2 appointment slots available – again you can contact me on the above email address if you’re interested.

All times stated are in GMT

The first half of the week is by far the most challenging. There is a very tetchy quinqunx aspect being formed that will be exact just as we go into Tuesday –

Tuesday Mars quinqunx Jupiter (00.57)

Regular readers will know that I talk of this aspect as the blind spot, symbolizing something that is obscured or confusing, by someone else’s design or on subjects on which we can never see eye to eye. Don’t try to force any situation that is already tense or full of doubts. Also please take life very carefully. This is a classic more haste less speed aspect and, without wishing to be at all alarmist, Mars under this aspect in particular is notorious for accidents. So slow down, physically and mentally, think ahead and don’t take risks.

Bear in mind that Mars’s colour is red. He symbolizes all the heated emotions – anger, passion and pain. At a physical level he rules burns, fevers, rashes, infections and inflammations. Illnesses, accidents or exhaustion brought about through overwork, rashness or anger are all Mars’ domain. His foods are anything hot or spicy, and his plants are prickly, sharp or stinging, such as nettles and thistles. So this is not a good time to grasp the nettle! Sit back and wait.
The “slow down and think” message is firmly underlined by Mercury’s aspect in the early hours of Wednesday. As I said last week we have been going through a Saturn season as the personal planets in Scorpio have been catching up with Saturn – who is just finishing his long trek through that sign. On 13 November we had Venus conjunct Saturn, on 18 November we had Sun conjunct Saturn and now it’s Mercury’s turn –

Wednesday Mercury conjunct Saturn (2.38)

This aspect forms at 26 degrees of Scorpio. If you have planets or angles at or close to this sign or degree then it will be especially significant for you. This also applies if you have planets or angles at or close to this degree in the other fixed signs of Taurus (opposition) or Leo and Aquarius (square).

At a universal level Mercury (communication) reaching Saturn (obstacles/denial) is a classic set up for serious conversations – or no conversation at all. Saturn knows how to block and create silences. This can also be bad news, tough decisions or a decision not to do something. It’s also a big reality check. In particular know your limitations in terms of your physical or mental resources – there is only so much time, money or emotional energy that you can expend on any specific matter and there comes a time when enough is enough. Be honest about what is not working for you and remember your right to say no. Be calm and clear in your dealings with other people – and don’t allow anyone to move the goalposts!

This might all sound rather negative but Saturn does tend to bring serious matters to the fore. In traditional astrology he is known as the Greater Malefic and he can be the fun police, the bringer of work and responsibility, or depressing matters that we would really rather not deal with but know we have to – and so on.

Note that Saturn is still in “mutual reception” with Pluto – that is, Saturn is travelling through Pluto’s sign of Scorpio and Pluto in turn is travelling through Saturn’s sign of Capricorn. In other words, these two planets are, in some ways, working as a team and supporting each other’s causes. A minor aspect hard on the heels of the Mercury – Saturn conjunction is therefore important –

Wednesday Venus semi-sextile (1 sign apart) Pluto (08.27)

The love planet being pulled into the mix puts emotional, sex and relationship issues under a lot of scrutiny. Whatever your main concern bear in mind that answers are most unlikely to be obvious. You will have to dig deep. Pluto is god of the underworld, the realm of invisibility which includes our unconscious – the underworld of our psyche – and a great deal of self awareness rests on our willingness to unearth the buried experiences of our past. This does not, however, mean that we should all be disappearing into black holes and raking over painful concerns just for the sake of it. Anything related to Scorpio/Pluto is often referred to as “transformational” although this tends to make the work involved sound easy. More accurately, the Plutonic experience is transformative, being about processing, and is ultimately about death/rebirth – in other words, the goal is always healing.

So, whatever matter you need to bring to resolution, the first half of the week is the time to do it. Also look out for different ways of doing things. The “rebirth” symbolism can show as finding new solutions to old problems.

Venus continues to feature midweek –

Thursday Venus trine Uranus (00.23)

The trine is a harmonious aspect, made when two planets reach the same degree in signs of the same element. This is a fire trine, as Uranus is still on his long trek through Aries and Venus is now blazing her way through Sagittarius. This is fabulous for spontaneity, good news of the surprising kind, matters related to friendships and groups, and all the Sagittarian concerns of freedom, travel, learning, teaching, publishing, the law – and the truth.

Note that even by good aspect Uranus is still notorious for throwing a spanner in the works. There may still be an element of surprise at work, and possibly something that will make more sense at a later date. Uranus loves to upset the applecart and change the dance. He follows on from Saturn in the natural sequence so his job is revolutionary, to challenge the hierarchy and to keep us moving with the times. Uranus loves breakthroughs and brilliance.

This could be more helpful than we might think as any matter that created confusion or sadness last week – when Venus squared up to Neptune last Thursday – is still ongoing. In other words, the Mercury-Saturn conjunction is the end of the Saturn season but the Neptune one is taking its place in terms of dominance. As the Sun entered Sagittarius on Saturday we now have –

Thursday Sun square Neptune (04.21)

Neptune under a difficult aspect generally signals a misted lens. The nature of the Sun is to illuminate but cutting through Neptune’s sea mists and fogs is not easy. As a rough rule of thumb, if something doesn’t add up then it doesn’t add up for a reason. Discovering the reason, again, is unlikely to be immediate or simple. Emotionally charged issues in particular are highly sensitized under this aspect and probably a lot more complex than they might at first seem.

Friday Mercury ingress Sagittarius (2.27)

Traditional astrology recognizes this as one of Mercury’s sign of detriment – as he is in dignity in the opposite sign of Gemini – but even so this is likely to bring a breath of fresh air and a lightening of mood. All the Scorpio intensity can be very heavy going and Mercury exiting this sign is a wonderful omen for seeing the back of a depressing situation, ending a hard going project or chapter in your own life or in the life of someone close to you.

But there’s still a “but”…. Mercury also has to struggle through Neptune which will be apparent over the weekend.

Monday (1 December) Mercury square Neptune (04.28)

The good news is that we have some fabulous astrology next week that signals that life is getting a lot easier, notably in terms of resolving what these Saturn and Neptune aspects have thrown up for you. I always love to quote the wonderful Sagittarian Lena Hjeltman who says, “Something magical happens when you work with the truth” – and I think the challenge of this week is exactly that. At a more practical level the message is about getting organized and not wasting your energy on the things that you can never change. Take care – and stay focused.

17 November 2014 – Saturn gets heavy but wide new horizons await us

Just to start with some astronomy, the Sun, Mercury and Venus all take a year to travel through the twelve signs of the zodiac. This in turn means that they all catch up with the slower moving planets once a year and at the moment we’re in Saturn season. Saturn himself has a cycle of just under thirty years and therefore spends approximately two and a half years in each sign. He’s been travelling through Scorpio since October 2012.

Last week we had the Venus – Saturn conjunction at 25 degrees of Scorpio (the last one was 18 September 2013 at 8 degrees of Scorpio). In last week’s blog I wrote –

In terms of textbook astrology Venus is love, pleasure and money, whereas Saturn rules limitations and likes saying no. Venus-Saturn aspects of any kind tend to bring us up against denial – the denial of our own feelings or that which is being denied to us.

This was amply borne out by the stories I was privy to last week and I should probably have underlined more strongly the fact that Venus is in her sign of detriment in the fixed water sign of Scorpio. This sign is associated with highly charged and intense feelings, issues of abuse/control/power and rules the 8th house of the horoscope, domain of death and the taboo. Venus is also women which also really showed last week – a prolonged and totally disabling gynecological illness, a woman having to give up work for family reasons, the end of the road for a marriage, a beautiful black (Scorpio’s colour) Persian cat killed on the road – sadly these are the kind of things we expect to experience or hear about as Venus struggles past Saturn’s implacability.

On the plus side Scorpio and the 8th house are about depth psychology, experiences that promote profound self awareness and a connection with our spirituality, however that may be experienced for the individual. The most uplifting showing of the Venus – Saturn was a client of mine now training to be a medium and who has lent me books on channeling. It’s also about putting our affairs in order – such as wills or pensions – and I tracked down something of my own, a plan I had paid into for only a year when doing a job I hated about 25 years ago!

This week it’s the Sun’s turn –

Tuesday Sun conjunct Saturn at 26 degrees of Scorpio (08.51)

This particular conjunction in Scorpio won’t happen again for nearly another thirty years. The last one was 6 November 2013 at 14 degrees of Scorpio but in a year’s time Saturn will have changed sign, so the next Sun – Saturn conjunction will fall on 30 November 2015 at 7 degrees of Sagittarius.

If you have planets or angles at or within a couple of degrees of 26 Scorpio this aspect will be especially significant for you. If you have planets or angles at or close to 26 degrees of the other fixed signs then this aspect will align with those natal positions by opposition (Taurus) or square (Leo and Aquarius). Don’t forget that if you don’t know the position of your natal planets you can find them in a matter of minutes by entering your date, place and time of birth into a chart calculator, such as this one:
http://www.alwaysastrology.com/birth-chart-calculator.html
As I was writing this blog I couldn’t help but think of one of my favourite teaching charts, the Queen’s horoscope. She has a Capricorn Ascendant with Saturn therefore as chart ruler, posited bang on the Midheaven (status/purpose). Her Saturn is 24.27 of Scorpio, her Midheaven is 25.37 so this is her third Saturn Return (when Saturn returns to his natal position which he does approximately every 29 and a half years, so as we approach the ages of 30, 60 and 90. These are major landmarks for all of us, but especially if Saturn is powerfully placed in the natal chart). Key astrological aspects in the charts of monarchs and leaders tend to show either as individual events or as major concerns for the nation.

At a more universal level what does the Sun – Saturn conjunction signify? The Sun is one of the Lights (the other being the Moon) and in traditional astrology Saturn is known as the enemy of the Lights – being in detriment in Leo (the Sun’s sign) and also in Cancer (the Moon’s sign). Similarly, the Sun is in detriment in Aquarius (one of Saturn’s signs) and the Moon is in detriment in Capricorn (Saturn’s other sign).

This makes symbolic sense as the Sun is the light of life, the life force and our vitality, Saturn is the Grim Reaper, so Sun – Saturn contacts are, in essence, all about life/death conflict, and the theme is heavily underlined with the conjunction happening in Scorpio. This doesn’t mean that we’ll all be dealing with bereavement. As with all astrology remember the as above/so below principle and think symbolically. What is reaching its natural end or what is a dead end? What is being denied or blocked? What is past the point of rescue? What needs the discipline of hard work? What are you prepared to give up in order to realize an ambition?

For some this will be the heart of a clear sequence of events unfolding – reflected by the Venus/Saturn last week and Mercury’s turn next week (26 November 2014, Mercury conjunct Saturn at 26 degrees of Scorpio).

This Saturn season can feel extremely heavy but, as with everything, it’s a cycle. The light at the end of the tunnel is already visible as Venus exited Scorpio last night (Sunday 16th 19.05) and is now in Sagittarius, a fire sign associated with exuberance, optimism and freedom, so at an emotional level this signals a big shift forwards. Sagittarius rules everything that expands our world and is therefore connected to learning (the expansion of the mind) and travel (the expansion of our physical horizons) so anything connected to the acquisition of wisdom/new experiences gets a huge tick. For me this has coincided with giving up on a plan to travel to the UK for Christmas and then finding that it was possible after all! I’ll be on my way on 18 December – the day of the month when the Moon is in Sagittarius as it turns out, which is also my Sun sign – for ten days. It’s the first trip away for over a year.

However, Venus has her own difficult aspect to get through this week –

Thursday Venus square Neptune (14.57)

This is an important aspect as Neptune has just turned direct (Sunday 16th, 07.07) in his own sign of Pisces. Every planet is double sided – the good and the bad! Neptune’s turnaround signals the turning of the emotional tides and transitions. Look out for issues connected to Neptunian concerns of deception/truth, grief/joy, confusion/deeper understanding, disconnection/empathy – and so on. With Venus in on this act all love issues are especially sensitized and it will take a while for the sea mists to clear.

The rest of the week has a much sharper focus with Mercury on the move –

Friday Mercury sextile Mars (14.02)
Sunday Mercury square Jupiter (04.44)

These are Mercury’s final aspects before he meets up with Saturn next week so pay special attention to anything that you are wrapping up or if you are paving the way to something new. Don’t get carried away! Some pointed conversations or discussions are on the cards, but watch out for Jupiter by square – and his big ideas! – and keep your realistic hat on. Final details and possibilities won’t be clarified until next week.

Finally, the Sun exits Scorpio at the weekend –

Saturday
Sun ingress Sagittarius (09.39) followed just a few hours later by the Moon.
New Moon at 0 degrees of Sagittarius (12.33)

This is a special New Moon, then, as it falls at 0 degrees, a symbolically powerful event for new beginnings of the very promising kind. Starting a brand new project, the arrival of a new face who will help you, meeting someone special if you’re unattached (the Moon’s next aspect is a conjunction with Venus at 8 degrees of Sagittarius on Sunday at 02.18), the beginning of a whole new journey of discovery, a travel or learning opportunity, letting go of the past and looking to the future – these are the kind of themes to look out for and with which to move forwards. Bring it on!

What’s happening this week?

All times stated are in GMT.

It’s an important start to the week as Mercury entered Scorpio on Saturday for the second time and now reaches 2 degrees of this sign, the degree at which he turned retrograde on 4 October. Mercury reaches 2 degrees of Scorpio at approximately midday today, Monday, and this means that he is now out of what is known as the “shadow” period.

What can you expect? This is a bit like a rerun of Mercury turning direct – which happened on 25 October – but with bells on. In other words, any matter that has been time consuming, confusing or hampered by outside factors in the last few weeks will now reach a major point of clarification or even closure. Expect that moment of achievement or finding yourself on the home stretch of a challenging project or a hard won battle. This event can also signal that sense of reaching the end of the tunnel, that moment of knowing that you’ve come through to the other side, either to leave something behind or to start afresh. Expect to make decisions or to have them made for you.

This picture will be especially poignant for you if you have natal planets or angles in the early degrees of Scorpio, or in the other fixed signs (Taurus, Leo and Aquarius). Don’t forget that if you don’t know the position of your natal planets you can find them in a matter of minutes by entering your date, place and time of birth into a chart calculator, such as this one:
http://www.alwaysastrology.com/birth-chart-calculator.html
Mercury’s emergence from the shadows is always good news, no matter what sign he is in, but the rebirth symbolism is underlined even more strongly by the fact that Mercury marks this moment in Scorpio. This sign’s biggest strength is the ability to regenerate, to move out of the shadows and back into the light. Mercury’s first aspect will be a harmonious trine to Neptune on Wednesday (03.40) which in itself is peaceable and the stuff of pacts, truces and deep emotional connection and understanding. With Scorpio there is however always the sting in the tail. It may be gloves off if you have matters of truth to address. Say it how it is because now is the time to deal with the facts of a matter and not figments of anyone’s imagination, including our own! This is powerfully underlined by the fact that Neptune is “stationing” (in the process of turning direct after five months of retrograde motion) so again there is the message of the real message emerging.

Admitting we were wrong, finding the strength to walk away from a job or a relationship that is beyond salvation, facing up to situations that cannot be changed but only accepted – these are the kind of themes to look out for as Monday closes with an aspect that smacks of inevitability –

Monday – Mars conjunct Pluto in Capricorn (23.04)

These are Scorpio’s ruling planets – Mars being the traditional ruler and Pluto being the modern co-ruler – and this conjunction happens at 11 degrees of Capricorn. Mars is the stronger factor as he is in his sign of exaltation and his principle is action, but Pluto is a tough adversary, planet of endings and black holes. As I’ve commented before you will frequently read “transformation” as a major keyword for Pluto but it’s a word to be used carefully. Pluto’s principle may be transformative but Plutonic change usually starts with loss, absence or endings and is therefore not of the overnight sensation variety.

The threads of this theme continue to work their way through this week’s astrological tapestry as midweek brings two major aspects less than half an hour apart –

Thursday
Venus conjunct Saturn (01.03)
Thursday – Mars square Uranus (01.30)

So, the meeting of Scorpio’s planets of Mars/Pluto in Capricorn (Saturn’s sign) is followed by Venus conjunct Saturn (Capricorn’s planet) in Scorpio. No matter which way you look at it these aspects signal issues that are heavy going or which need stringent reality tests. In terms of textbook astrology Venus is love, pleasure and money, whereas Saturn rules limitations and likes saying no. Venus-Saturn aspects of any kind tend to bring us up against denial – the denial of our own feelings or that which is being denied to us. Mars in conflict with Uranus, planet of rebellion or the unexpected, may also throw another spanner in the works. Note that in relationship astrology Uranus rules splits.

This doesn’t mean that all of life’s pleasures are suddenly going to disappear or that your love life will self destruct but if you have planets or angles that align with these aspects then you are inevitably up against challenges. To summarize –

The Mars – Pluto conjunction – 11 degrees of Capricorn
The Venus – Saturn conjunction – 25 degrees of Scorpio
The Mars – Uranus square – 13 degrees of Capricorn and Aries respectively

The good news is that anything that is already in a tailspin will be hurtling towards an inevitable conclusion and the opportunity to bail out may actually be a relief. Similarly, if you’ve been having doubts about the wisdom of pursing any particular course of action, then events during the first half of this week will sort the wheat from the chaff. Look for and read the obvious signposts.

The second half of the week is much lighter as jolly Jupiter steps in –

Friday – Sun square Jupiter (03.06)

The square is an inharmonious aspect but is not so troublesome when the two planets involved are not troublemakers. Jupiter’s principle is expansion and under duress points to biting off more than you can chew, over doing things, overspending, going over the top – but quite possibly having a lot of fun in the process.

As mentioned earlier Neptune is stationing and turns direct at nearly 5 degrees of Pisces at the weekend –

Sunday
Neptune turns direct at (07.07)

Mercury is the first planet to capture this mood (Mercury trine Neptune early hours of Wednesday) and he now also makes a constructive sextile to Pluto, Sunday (13.56). As above, so below. Look out for things swimming to the surface, a turning point in any situation which has provoked mixed feelings, information that throws a new light on the viability of a major plan or events that put you in touch with your own real feelings, or someone else’s. This weekend picture feels very much like getting to grips with things and probably expending a great deal of energy but being happy with the final results.

Sunday closes with –

Venus ingress Sagittarius (19.05)

This is good news as the love planet exits Scorpio her sign of detriment and enters freewheeling fiery Sagittarius, sign of optimism, learning and travel – and I’ll be talking more about this next week.

What’s happening this week?

All times stated are in GMT.

Venus and the Sun are now travelling through Scorpio and both make that awkward quinqunx aspect to Uranus in the first half of the week –

Monday Venus quinqunx Uranus (15.05)
Wednesday Sun quinqunx Uranus (21.59)

This “blind spot” aspect occurs as planets align when they are five signs apart. Also note that Uranus himself is the planet of the unexpected and is still travelling through Aries so this conflict happens between planets that are both in the signs ruled by Mars. This cranks up the heat for potential conflict of the kind that you couldn’t possibly see coming. In other words, getting caught out by Mars stuff is high on the risk agenda. Mars is ego – be honest about your own agendas and try to be objective – and he is also energy, as is the Sun. If you’re under the weather then don’t overdo things. Listen to your body, rest up and don’t push yourself too hard. The world won’t stop turning if you cancel an appointment or a night out. The sign of Scorpio is traditionally and symbolically death and rebirth. While we may be spiritual beings having a physical experience we are also physical beings having a spiritual experience. We don’t say “keeping body and soul together” for nothing. So find the balance and if you need to recharge the batteries then the first half of this week is the time to do so.

Venus is the love planet so take it nice and steady if you’re getting to know someone new. And even if you think you know someone inside out, the reality is that we don’t know anyone inside out. Even our closest loved ones can surprise us. Also Venus rules money as well as love so be vigilant – and realistic. If you’re planning a budget for anything be aware that the hidden extras factor is likely to prove far more troublesome than you might have bargained for. However, the main theme of this week is bringing the bigger picture into focus so any kind of uncertainty is likely to be short lived.

Monday also brings a major aspect that helps things along –

Sun sextile Pluto (22.49)

The Sun in Scorpio in good aspect to Pluto, Scorpio’s co-ruling planet on his long journey through purposeful Capricorn (which just for the record started in 2008 and ends in 2023 so still many years to go) is a powerful teaming and fantastic for positive endings/new beginnings, healing of all kinds and finding the balance – such as work/life, spiritual/physical or emotional/material needs. Finding the right person to help you is key, especially for stubborn health problems or working out how to make a big change in your life.

Thursday Full Moon 14 degrees of Taurus (22.24)

This is the Moon’s best sign – she rules the water sign of Cancer but the earth sign of Taurus is her sign of “exaltation” – and it’s a picture of fertility and fruition. Financial concerns are the first to grab the spotlight. Note, however, that all Full Moons are also very much linked to “lunacy” so look out for the domestics, especially as this Full Moon is preceded by the Uranus disruption. Often this lunacy factor is related to issues coming to light. The Full Moon illuminates and brings things out of hiding. Guard against falling out with someone over money. It’s always a sensitive issue but if you’re in a money muddle of any kind, or if you need to find ways of making the cash go a lot further, now’s the time to find the practical answers.

Saturday Mercury ingress Scorpio (23.10)

This is significant as this Mercury’s ingress into Scorpio Take 2. Here’s the sequence that’s been unfolding and which is now reaching its final stages –

• 27 September Mercury entered Scorpio for the first time but was already stationing (slowing down)
• 4 October Mercury turned retrograde at 2 degrees of Scorpio
• 10 October Mercury went back into Libra
• 25 October Mercury turned direct at 17 degrees of Libra
• 8 November Mercury enters Scorpio for the second time
• 10 November (next Monday) Mercury will reach 2 degrees of Scorpio for the second time, but this time keeps moving. (This is known as the end of the shadow period – which covers the period of time between Mercury turning direct and returning to the degree at which he turned retrograde)

So, what does this all mean? Firstly look back to see what issues were important for you at the end of September and beginning of October. Either these will return or they will reach an important next stage or a conclusion. For me this is easy to see as I actually wrote the very last words of my new book on 2 October, I’ve been working on amendments since then – classic retrograde Mercury, spotting errors and making corrections, requiring a lot of close concentration and attention to detail – and now I’m on the final proof read. All writers feel at this stage that actually writing the book was the easy bit! However, Mercury (writing, books) getting back into Scorpio (witchy subjects) for the second time is perfect symbolism for wrapping up this project and I can now look forward to seeing my “baby” in print (due date 12 March 2015).
Also look out for themes of being able to make decisions related to longer standing issues, especially something you’ve been thinking about for a long time. This Mercury activity signals news that will make a difference. Also look out for all of the other usual themes connected to Mercury picking up speed, such as truth games, corrected information, answers to sticky problems, finding what you’ve been looking for or going ahead with plans or major purchases.
The rest of the weekend picture is also pretty lively as we travel towards a Venus – Jupiter aspect –
Sunday Venus square Jupiter (20.42)
The two Benefics (the good guys) coming together is usually happy news, especially for love, fun and new opportunities. The cautionary note lies in the fact that this particular alignment has something of an “over the top” quality. A square is a challenging aspect, Venus is still in Scorpio her sign of detriment and Jupiter is in big, bold Leo and hard to miss. Jupiter’s principle is expansion but under a difficult aspect this can tip over into inflation and exaggeration. Jupiter in Leo being pulled into the picture by square to a super sensitive Venus has the feel of someone loving a drama or even creating one when life gets too tame, feelings running high or touchy subjects growing arms and legs. This aspect will be applying (in the process of becoming exact) throughout the weekend so if you’re off on a Saturday night out there’s no denying that the time is right for letting your hair down, but it’s about knowing when to stop!
Similarly, with work, social or family commitments, guard against biting off more than you can chew – or more than you can realistically afford. Debt accrued at this time may be regretted so if you’re going to go out on a limb in any way make sure it’s for a reason that is really worthwhile.

New book

'BE YOUR OWN ASTROLOGER' is Joanna's latest book.
'Learning your own astrology is always more complicated than people imagine but Joanna has presented the clearest possible pathway to astrological self-knowledge'.
Cygnus Community Review

“The narrative is top-notch; it’s easy to follow, well organized, and will quickly give the absolute beginner a quantum boost to the next level of astrological knowledge.”
“The further the beginner gets into this book, the more engaging yet complex the material becomes. The later chapters mark entry points into further studies, but with Be Your Own Astrologer, you get the overall landscape of what astrology is all about.”
