The Astrology Blog – w/b 27 January 2014

I don’t normally start by jumping further ahead than the coming week but just to break with tradition… Next week is one of those in which nothing major is unfolding with the exception of Mercury turning retrograde – and to be forewarned about that is always to be forearmed! – but I think it will otherwise be a sort of watershed. By comparison this coming week is nuts and we’ll probably all need a breather of some kind by the time we get to the end of it.

So fasten your seatbelts for a dramatic picture that unfolds from the middle of the week, although note as explained last week that “applying” aspects can show during the 48 hours run up to becoming exact. Here’s the sequence:

–          The Sun in Aquarius heads for a sextile (harmonious) with Uranus, the planet that co-rules this sign. (Traditional astrology gives Saturn to Aquarius, and assigns Uranus as co-ruler) This aspect is exact on Wednesday morning at 08.34 GMT.

–          This is swiftly followed by the New Moon at 11 degrees of Aquarius, exact on Thursday at 21.40 GMT. This means that the New Moon (when the Sun and Moon are exactly conjunct each other) falls sextile to Uranus, so it’s sort of a double whammy.

Look out for events that are flavoured by Uranus’s spices of the unexpected, the unusual, the innovative or the shocking. With a harmonious aspect in play we can expect some of these events to be of the nice surprise variety but Uranus is such a rogue planet and so notoriously unpredictable that even by good aspect he can signal disruption, changes and news of the very unsettling kind. Look out for events that require you to leap into action and think on your feet.

On the cheerier side don’t forget about Uranus’ and Aquarius’ ruling of all things group orientated. Teamwork and networking of all kinds get a big yes, as does spending time with good friends or making new ones. Work wise or leisure wise it’s time to befriend the internet or learn the technological skills that you’re lacking.

The dust hardly has time to settle before we get the next major aspect of the week, Jupiter opposite Pluto for the second time, exact on Friday at 09.37 GMT. (The first was 8 August 2013 and the third will be 21 April 2014). This is a relatively rare aspect as Jupiter has a 12 year cycle – and Pluto is the slowest moving of them all with a 248 year cycle – so Jupiter will oppose Pluto approximately every 13 years. (The last series of Jupiter oppositions to Pluto was between May 2000 to September 2001). It’s possible that you’ll be dealing with an issue that first appeared last August and that will be finally resolved in April.

So, Uranus is the planet of dramatic change (revolution) but Pluto is the planet of death/rebirth (evolution). Pluto tells us when it is time to move on and endings of some kind are either embraced or, more usually, often forced upon us. Most of us are resistant to change until we have no choice. Pluto loves change of the total and no going back kind and loves slamming the door behind him.

By contrast Jupiter is known as the Greater Benefic, planet of opportunity and good fortune, and brings things or people that are good for us. In tandem with Pluto however this may not be immediately obvious! I would say that this can be the classic cloud with a silver lining aspect, or even if you know what/who you want, you’ll be looking at an all or nothing scenario or events which require huge amounts of effort. Big, bold, daring moves are signaled under the Jupiter – Pluto combination and ultimately you have the chance to make the big changes that have probably been brewing for some time. The bigger picture message is that you can’t change and stay the same – something has to give and the “rebirth” process is not without pain. Goodbyes are hard, but they mustn’t stop us from venturing further into the world. Jupiter’s principle is expansion and personal growth is at the top of that list.

To share my own story – my move! I have been in my apartment for twelve years, and Jupiter with his 12 year orbit has therefore now come full cycle. Astrologically the cycle is exact as Jupiter was at 11 degrees of Cancer when I moved in, he is now retrograde and is at 12 degrees of Cancer and will be at 11 degrees again when I move in a couple of weeks time. I am moving in with family for the first time since childhood (will have to learn the “communal” thing again as signaled by Aquarius) but the villa is huge (Jupiter’s expansion principle) and we got it through a stroke of incredible luck. As a Sagittarian I often get that Jupiter 11th hour type luck. The Pluto bit is that I am “leaving home” all over again, leaving my Greek family who have been a major part of my life for the last twelve years. My landlord and landlady live downstairs, they have daughters the same age as me, and although I will still of course see them it is nevertheless about breaking that tie. It’s also about dejunking! Pluto is ruthless, uncompromising and purging. The de-junk has started with a vengeance and is frankly overwhelming but it has to be done!

Also on Friday two other events swiftly follow – Mercury changes sign and his ingress into Pisces is exact at 14.30 GMT, and Venus turns direct in purposeful Capricorn at 20.50 GMT after being retrograde since 21 December. These feel contradictory. Mercury is entering one of his signs of detriment, and is slow moving now as he’ll turn retrograde next Thursday, so there’s some very sensitive stuff bubbling there and I’ll be talking more about this next time. On the other hand, the love planet Venus getting back to business is great news. She will take a while to get back up to full speed but look out for positive and constructive turning points in your relationship, with a work or financial concern, or with any matter that is close to your heart. Again, I’ll be talking more next week about Venus on the move.

The Astrology Blog – w/b 20 January 2014

Okay it’s all aboard the bus of the magical mystery tour with the Sun’s ingress into Aquarius in the early hours of this morning. This is, in my view, an incredibly complex sign so let me start with an overview of the Aquarian nature and concerns.

Firstly in traditional astrology this is the Sun’s sign of detriment as it’s the opposite to Leo, where the Sun blazes away in his sign of dignity. Aquarians are therefore not especially known for warmth and can come across as cool, detached or even indifferent. The truth is, however, that they have very strong feelings and even stronger opinions.

Leo represents the power and creativity of the individual, but Aquarius looks above the concept of self in favour of the collective. Leo is subjective, Aquarius is objective and concerns itself with the bigger picture. Communism, and organizations such as Greenpeace or Amnesty International, can all be said to be Aquarian.

The paradox of this sign lies in the fact that Aquarians prize their own individuality and often feel “different” from the rest of the world, often from a very early age. The ability to detach is a double edged sword and becomes a distinct handicap when it comes to fitting in and forging personal relationships. Aquarians are often easily embarrassed or just plain uncomfortable with displays of emotion and can be disconnected from their own authentic feelings. Intimacy does not come easily to them, even though they may secretly crave it. A matter of fact approach can all too easily give the wrong impression of needing nobody, which results in their feeling unneeded. Aquarius has to learn the art of seduction and courtship from Leo who simply claims attention as a birthright.

The rulership of Aquarius is shared by two planets:

The Saturn symbolism describes the Aquarian who is serious, disciplined, organised, deadly logical and highly systematic. Most Aquarians are, for example, compulsive list makers and place great value on their own particular way of doing things. In this respect they need to guard against inflexibility.

The Uranian symbolism describes the other type of Aquarian who is the rebel with or without a cause, the misfit or the mad professor – unusual, eccentric, quirky and way ahead of their time. Or in the words of one of my Aquarian friends, “it’s not me who is strange, it’s everyone else”.

Both types believe that they are right. Absolutely. If you’ve ever persuaded an Aquarian to change their minds about something they feel strongly about please write in and tell us how you did it.

Back to the present moment it will pay to look at the world through Aquarian eyes for the next few weeks. Be especially alert to situations that need dispassionate decision making. Try to go with what makes sense rather than acting purely on personal preferences or desires. Friendships also climb up the scale of importance under this sign – the time is right for catching up with friends, making new ones or arranging any kind of group activity/joining a group for leisure or work interests.

Single? If you want to take a leaf out of Aquarius’ book – especially while Venus is still retrograde in Saturn’s other sign of Capricorn – focus on a meeting of minds. The most successful relationships will now spring from friendship and intellectual equality rather than from lust! If you’re in a relationship remind yourself of the things that you love about your partner and put shared interests/mutual friends higher up your list of priorities for a while. Venus will be turning direct again at the end of next week and the more effort you invest in any important relationship now the better.

What else? Mercury is also in Aquarius and is the other key player this week. Here’s the sequence:

  • Mercury semi-sextile (a minor but harmonious aspect) Venus – Tuesday 09.28 GMT
  • Mercury trine (harmonious) Mars in Libra – Friday 14.58 GMT
  • Mercury square (inharmonious) Saturn in Scorpio – Saturday 11.57 GMT

Remember that all aspects are at their most potent as they are “applying” – ie becoming exact. The 48 hours prior to the aspect becoming exact are the most important. Once the aspect has happened it is then said to be “separating” and therefore losing its potency. An aspect will be past its sell by date 48 hours, usually less, after being exact. (nb a longer time period can be allowed for aspects from the major planets, the 48 hour time period applies to the personal planets – Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars).

So, note that Mercury rules everything under the communication umbrella – decisions, news, ideas, discussions etc. And now that he’s in Aquarius, sign of technology, emails and texts take on greater significance. You can get a lot done or spread the word. If you have a website now’s the time to use it to much greater effect. Get your stuff updated and share links. Look out for news/help/business deals with women first (Venus) and then men (Mars) later in the week. Otherwise these first two Mercury contacts are great for your social life, having fun, lots of chat and creative thinking of all kinds.

The Mercury – Saturn contact at the weekend is of a slightly different flavor. Saturn moving into the picture under a difficult aspect signals delays, obstacles or bad news. Look out for cancellations or changes of plan, and avoid putting yourself or anyone else under pressure. Pushing for answers under a Mercury – Saturn square is pretty much guaranteed to engender resentment or to produce a big fat “no”. If someone doesn’t want to talk, or fall in with your plans, leave them be. Similarly, don’t allow yourself to get talked into anything that doesn’t feel right for you.

Also this aspect operates a bit like a retrograde Mercury – double check that someone has received information sent earlier in the week, don’t travel if you don’t have to, and watch your personal possessions, especially phones, keys, tablets, cameras etc. Bide your time with any important issue that hits a sticking point. You won’t have long to wait. Next week brings a surge of major activity – you will see why something was barred to you or why it was good to give in gracefully and unemotionally – and using the weekend to ease back and conserve your energy will be no bad thing.

The Astrology Blog – w/b 13 January 2014

It’s the last week of the Sun’s journey through Capricorn, with the Full Moon in Cancer at 04.53 GMT on Thursday. If you’re new to astrology note that the time of the Full Moon is Sun opposite Moon, so always in the opposite sign to the Sun, receiving all the light, and New Moons are Sun conjunct Moon, always in the same sign as the Sun and therefore cannot be seen. When you see the New Moon sliver in the sky this is about three days after the New Moon was exact.

So, what can we expect at the time of the Full Moon? On the risky side it’s associated with lunacy (lunar) and any A & E department or police station will tell you that they expect to be busy on these nights. The Moon rules our emotional world and the Full Moon is notorious for domestics, when nerves reach full stretch and bottled up feelings pour forth. Even if there’s not a scene, any personal issue that has been causing angst is likely to be highly sensitized.

On the positive side this is a “good” New Moon as it falls in her own sign of Cancer, the sign in which the Moon is said to be dignified. The Moon and the sign of Cancer between them rule all matters connected to home, family and property so you can expect a result if these issues are key for you at the moment. Regular readers will know that lucky Jupiter is also travelling through this sign – again, very positive, Cancer is Jupiter’s sign of “exaltation” – and if you have clear skies on Tuesday night you’ll see the Full Moon getting nearer to that dazzling planet. The Moon – Jupiter conjunction is exact at about 5am GMT on Wednesday, so look out for a fortunate stepping stone towards any need or desire.

As the Full Moon is about opposites also look out for polarizing – swinging to the opposite extreme. Be honest about your feelings, especially your resentments, and keep a sense of proportion. Polarizing behavior often signals unconscious behavior at work – such as the person who hates their partner drinking but, rather than say so, decides to become a virtuous teetotaler. Or the person who is seething about their partner’s extravagance but, rather than say so, starts imposing extreme austerity measures of their own. Any behavior that sets up and plays into friction, rather than resolving it, needs scrutiny.

The Capricorn – Cancer polarity also brings work v home issues to light. Look out for issues of equality in the home/breadwinning and, if goalposts have been moved, it’s time to put them back again.

The love planet Venus is another key player this week. She is currently retrograde (which happens approximately every 18 months for about six weeks at a time), underlining the general theme of heightened sensitivity. She is also square Mars on Thursday, exact at 17.14 GMT, who is on his unusually long journey through Libra – the sign of partnership that is ruled by Venus.

There’s a lot of truth in the saying that women are from Venus and men are from Mars, and you may be more aware of your differences than the things you have in common at this time. It’s not worth getting into a fight about the things that can never be changed but, if there is something you need to tackle, make a start but go gently. Note that this aspect repeats on 2 March, coinciding with Saturn switching to retrograde, so you will probably be returning to key points in about six weeks time.

Single? Take your time getting to know someone new. Any relationship coming together under a retrograde Venus will have some kind of hidden issue going on or some area of uncertainty, as in more than usual!  There’s only another two weeks to go before she turns direct again. Love issues will then get the green light, or a new face will enter the picture, but I’ll be talking about that more nearer the time.

Finally remember that Mercury entered Aquarius over the weekend. Some textbooks will tell you that this is Mercury’s sign of exaltation although traditional astrology says that Mercury is both dignified and exalted in Virgo. Whether you follow this or not the communication planet is generally happy in the air signs, element of the mind. Aquarius is known for being bright, inquisitive and ahead of its time. Such themes are powerful at the end of the week when Mercury makes a sextile (harmonious) to Uranus, the sign that co-rules Aquarius, so there’s a kind of double whammy attached to bright ideas, making new contacts/contracts through/with groups or on line, news that is unexpected or unusual, or any sudden turn of events that remind you how quickly life can change.

The Astrology Blog – w/b 6 January 2014

The sign of Capricorn continues to dominate the astrological picture, along with “get your act together” Saturn, the ruling planet of this sign. Monday morning starts with Mercury in Capricorn making a sextile (harmonious) to Saturn, still on his long journey through powerful Scorpio. If you haven’t already got your work head back on now’s the time to do so. This is a fantastic aspect for list making, getting organized, making definite arrangements or commitments, or making a plan. Capricorn is the sign of the mountain goat, surefooted and purposeful, and loves a project.

The Mercury – Saturn combination is also good for conversations or discussions of the serious kind. If you want to establish new ground rules in any relationship then do so. Saturn works best with clear goal posts – not ones that keep moving – and rewards respect and emotional maturity. So no throwing the toys out of the pram! You will achieve nothing if you get touchy or defensive. State your case, clearly and calmly.

On Tuesday night Mercury meets up with Venus, also in Capricorn but currently retrograde. Love talk gets shunted to the top of the list but don’t expect instant results. While Venus is retrograde there is a sense of love issues going through a trial period or, if you’re getting to know someone new, you may find that it’s an uphill struggle. Similarly, remember that Venus is also about desire, so whatever wish you are trying to gratify will probably need a lot more effort and persistence than usual. Don’t give up. Venus is back in the picture at the end of the week – more on that in a moment.

Firstly, there’s a Mars square Jupiter to navigate midweek. The aspect is exact late Wednesday and potentially troublesome re anger management. If you’re nursing resentments of any kind this is the day when you could lose your cool. Alternatively, it’s an aspect that signals generally overdoing things and going over the top, whether it’s with work or personal issues. Just check that you’re not wasting your energy on the wrong things or making unnecessary work for yourself. Also, slow down! This aspect is notorious for accidents, such as cuts or burns, especially those sustained through inattention or being in too much of a hurry. Impatience will backfire on you. If you get stuck in traffic try not to fume, or rush as soon as the road is clear – unless you want to get thumped with a parking ticket. If you’ve been ill don’t try to short circuit convalescence. In short, do absolutely nothing in haste.

Back to Venus. She rules love, pleasures, money and all the sweet things of life, so while she is retrograde in hardy Capricorn, a sign associated more with hard work and self denial than indulgence, it may seem that some or all of the above are not easily achievable. Don’t be surprised if you’re experiencing frustration, the blues or a sense of pointlessness. In a weird sort of way, you’re supposed to be. Nobody tastes success without experiencing failure first. And how can you know what you want until you are sure about what you don’t want? All desires are currently work in progress, whether it’s doing up a house, saving money, looking for work or licking your relationship into shape.

The good news – hurray – is that Venus signals a progress report at the end of the week. Here’s the sequence:

·         Venus sextile Saturn – Saturday 11 January, approx 11am GMT

·         Sun conjunct Venus – same day, approx midday GMT

·         Sun sextile Saturn – same day, approx 14.00 GMT

The first aspect is important as it’s the second of three Venus – Saturn sextiles. The first was 23 November last year, and the third will be 25 February. Only this middle one is formed while Venus is retrograde. So, pay special attention to any issue that first became significant at the end of last year as it’s up for a review. You’ll now get a clearer picture of where you’re going and what’s required of you. You’ll start to see what is working and, probably more importantly, what isn’t. The next six weeks will be formative.

The second aspect is also important because any planet conjunct the Sun to within 17’ of arc – or just over quarter of a degree – is said to be “cazimi”. This means that the planet is sitting in the heart of the Sun, drawing heat and energy into itself and working at full power. Look out for those light bulb moments, the enlightenment signaled by conjunctions to the Sun, special closeness to a loved one or meeting someone whom you recognize immediately as a soul mate. Health issues are in there too as the Sun is the life source.

The Sun – Saturn sextile wraps up the package, although it may not necessarily be tied up with ribbons. Saturn is not given to sentimentality. However, Venus loves to sugar the pill, so even if you’re dealing with something really tough you should find that there is plenty of help and support on hand, and of the kind that you really need. When the going gets tough you don’t want kind words as much as you need practical and loving hands to the wheel.

This is underlined by the last astrological event of the week which is Mercury changing sign, moving on into Aquarius on Saturday evening. The sign of the Water Bearer is in fact an air sign, element of the mind, and is associated with logic, ideas, detachment and objectivity. Mercury in Aquarius favours head over heart, doing what makes sense in the face of the facts no matter how your feelings may be tugging you in another direction.

Note also that Aquarius rules groups, friendship and technology while Mercury is brilliant for networking. If you want to give your social life a shot in the arm go along to something new, maybe an event that you wouldn’t normally choose. Putting yourself back into circulation is also your top business tip, via social media or face to face, or ideally both. The only danger with Mercury in Aquarius is that it can be too impersonal – so don’t let your world reduce to the size of the computer screen! If too much of your interaction is in cyber world you might want to redress the balance.
