The Astrology Blog – w/b 6 January 2014
The sign of Capricorn continues to dominate the astrological picture, along with “get your act together” Saturn, the ruling planet of this sign. Monday morning starts with Mercury in Capricorn making a sextile (harmonious) to Saturn, still on his long journey through powerful Scorpio. If you haven’t already got your work head back on now’s the time to do so. This is a fantastic aspect for list making, getting organized, making definite arrangements or commitments, or making a plan. Capricorn is the sign of the mountain goat, surefooted and purposeful, and loves a project.
The Mercury – Saturn combination is also good for conversations or discussions of the serious kind. If you want to establish new ground rules in any relationship then do so. Saturn works best with clear goal posts – not ones that keep moving – and rewards respect and emotional maturity. So no throwing the toys out of the pram! You will achieve nothing if you get touchy or defensive. State your case, clearly and calmly.
On Tuesday night Mercury meets up with Venus, also in Capricorn but currently retrograde. Love talk gets shunted to the top of the list but don’t expect instant results. While Venus is retrograde there is a sense of love issues going through a trial period or, if you’re getting to know someone new, you may find that it’s an uphill struggle. Similarly, remember that Venus is also about desire, so whatever wish you are trying to gratify will probably need a lot more effort and persistence than usual. Don’t give up. Venus is back in the picture at the end of the week – more on that in a moment.
Firstly, there’s a Mars square Jupiter to navigate midweek. The aspect is exact late Wednesday and potentially troublesome re anger management. If you’re nursing resentments of any kind this is the day when you could lose your cool. Alternatively, it’s an aspect that signals generally overdoing things and going over the top, whether it’s with work or personal issues. Just check that you’re not wasting your energy on the wrong things or making unnecessary work for yourself. Also, slow down! This aspect is notorious for accidents, such as cuts or burns, especially those sustained through inattention or being in too much of a hurry. Impatience will backfire on you. If you get stuck in traffic try not to fume, or rush as soon as the road is clear – unless you want to get thumped with a parking ticket. If you’ve been ill don’t try to short circuit convalescence. In short, do absolutely nothing in haste.
Back to Venus. She rules love, pleasures, money and all the sweet things of life, so while she is retrograde in hardy Capricorn, a sign associated more with hard work and self denial than indulgence, it may seem that some or all of the above are not easily achievable. Don’t be surprised if you’re experiencing frustration, the blues or a sense of pointlessness. In a weird sort of way, you’re supposed to be. Nobody tastes success without experiencing failure first. And how can you know what you want until you are sure about what you don’t want? All desires are currently work in progress, whether it’s doing up a house, saving money, looking for work or licking your relationship into shape.
The good news – hurray – is that Venus signals a progress report at the end of the week. Here’s the sequence:
· Venus sextile Saturn – Saturday 11 January, approx 11am GMT
· Sun conjunct Venus – same day, approx midday GMT
· Sun sextile Saturn – same day, approx 14.00 GMT
The first aspect is important as it’s the second of three Venus – Saturn sextiles. The first was 23 November last year, and the third will be 25 February. Only this middle one is formed while Venus is retrograde. So, pay special attention to any issue that first became significant at the end of last year as it’s up for a review. You’ll now get a clearer picture of where you’re going and what’s required of you. You’ll start to see what is working and, probably more importantly, what isn’t. The next six weeks will be formative.
The second aspect is also important because any planet conjunct the Sun to within 17’ of arc – or just over quarter of a degree – is said to be “cazimi”. This means that the planet is sitting in the heart of the Sun, drawing heat and energy into itself and working at full power. Look out for those light bulb moments, the enlightenment signaled by conjunctions to the Sun, special closeness to a loved one or meeting someone whom you recognize immediately as a soul mate. Health issues are in there too as the Sun is the life source.
The Sun – Saturn sextile wraps up the package, although it may not necessarily be tied up with ribbons. Saturn is not given to sentimentality. However, Venus loves to sugar the pill, so even if you’re dealing with something really tough you should find that there is plenty of help and support on hand, and of the kind that you really need. When the going gets tough you don’t want kind words as much as you need practical and loving hands to the wheel.
This is underlined by the last astrological event of the week which is Mercury changing sign, moving on into Aquarius on Saturday evening. The sign of the Water Bearer is in fact an air sign, element of the mind, and is associated with logic, ideas, detachment and objectivity. Mercury in Aquarius favours head over heart, doing what makes sense in the face of the facts no matter how your feelings may be tugging you in another direction.
Note also that Aquarius rules groups, friendship and technology while Mercury is brilliant for networking. If you want to give your social life a shot in the arm go along to something new, maybe an event that you wouldn’t normally choose. Putting yourself back into circulation is also your top business tip, via social media or face to face, or ideally both. The only danger with Mercury in Aquarius is that it can be too impersonal – so don’t let your world reduce to the size of the computer screen! If too much of your interaction is in cyber world you might want to redress the balance.
‘All desires are currently work in progress, whether it’s doing up a house …’ had to chuckle at this. I’m planning to do this but was forced to take early action when my dormer window sprang a leak in the first of the storms before Christmas. Left it till the New Year to start ringing roofers, but they’re all on answerphone message. At least it started leaking before redecoration … and it’s a small leak. It’ll be interesting to see when they get back to me.
