What’s happening this week?

This has the feel of a landmark week. Saturn (takes about two and a half years to travel through one sign) and Neptune (takes about 14 years) catch up with each other by trine (harmonious aspect). This aspect forms in the water signs, Saturn being at 5 degrees of Scorpio and Neptune being at 5 degrees in his own sign of Pisces, and will be exact at 00.19 BST on Wednesday. This is the second contact of three – the first was on 11 October 2012, the third will be on 19 July 2013. If you have planets at 5 degrees of any sign in your own horoscope this event will be especially significant for you.

It has to be said that these outer planets carry tough messages, even when in harmonious aspect. Also this second contact is flanked by two difficult aspects – Venus opposite Pluto late on Tuesday night and Venus square Uranus. So Venus is re-invoking the ongoing Uranus – Pluto square that is taking a very long time to play out… only two more years to go on that one!

For now, if you had conflict in your life around 20 May look out for the next episode and, ideally, a chance to resolve it. Also check back to see what has roots stretching back into last October. Neptune’s big message is redemption and much can be achieved when we step out of “ego” and connect with compassion/understanding.

Up your game to protect what is of value to you. Venus is not just about love between couples, she is also girlfriends, pets, money, a comfortable life style, treasured possessions and all the sweet things of life. As she runs the gauntlet of Pluto (loss, endings, surgery, power and control issues) and then Uranus (the unexpected, the loose cannon, disputes) highly charged or sensitive issues are likely to peak.

As I write my youngest cat Jasper is at the vet, having his tail amputated. I found him injured last night. Three comments on that:

·         One, he is embodying this symbolism and is going to be okay, as even though he had been missing for three weeks (since 20 May!) I found him in time. He has necrosis (Pluto, the part of the loss that has been “killed off”) but he is having life saving surgery.

·         Two, I’ve had the invaluable company and guidance this last week of a beautiful Pisces friend who has imparted a great deal of wisdom to me. One of the life lessons we talked about was the difference between “a situation” and “a drama”. When we focus on the former, rather than getting sucked into the whirlpool (Uranus – Pluto) of the latter, we heal (Saturn – Neptune).

·         Three, working with the symbolic helps us to confirm this. I will share with you that yes, I do have a planet at 5 degrees of Scorpio, and I do have a bigger issue that begs the question of do I “amputate” this/do I find a way to heal it?

What’s happening this week? This is the most cheerful picture that we’ve seen for a while as Mercury conjuncts Jupiter (08.57 BST) this morning and Venus will conjunct Jupiter tomorrow evening (20.30 BST). These are, roughly, annual events as the fast moving personal planets catch up with slower moving Jupiter (12 year cycle) once a year. (The last Mercury/Jupiter conjunction was 22 May 2012, the last Venus/Jupiter conjunction was 14 March 2012, in Taurus).

It’s always encouraging to see Jupiter in the picture. Traditional astrology calls mighty Zeus “the greater benefic” and it’s easy to see why his principle is “expansion” as he rules good fortune, opportunity, education, justice, freedom and travel. That which makes our world bigger and better is his job – ours is to learn, to stay informed and to work with the truth. The headline in the news that captured this picture best for me was on the BBC:

“Colombia’s government and Farc rebels say they have agreed on land reform, after months of talks on how to end five decades of conflict.”

These conjunctions are taking place in Gemini – the communicator of the zodiac. There’s nothing new under the sun – if you have conflict in your life the road to peace is to talk. With Venus in the picture – traditional astrology bestows Aphrodite with the title of “the lesser benefic” – the message is also to move from a position of concern and compassion. Ultimately, Jupiter is the liberator.

Note that these conjunctions fall at 23 degrees of Gemini. If you have planets at or close to this degree, in any sign but especially by conjunction or opposition (Sagittarius), these aspects will be especially significant for you.

We also have two planets changing sign at the end of the week. Mercury moves on into Cancer on Friday morning, and Mars moves on into Gemini four hours later. I’ll be talking more about these next week.

The weekend picture is the Sun in sextile (two signs apart, harmonious) to Uranus, and the aspect is exact in the early hours of Sunday morning. Hopefully we will see the positive side to Uranus – spontaneity, fun, exciting news or enjoyment to be found in groups. He is however always the loose cannon of the zodiac so even by good aspect I would still err on the side of caution in risk taking scenarios of any kind.

22 April 2013 – This week’s Astrology

What’s happening this week? Well it’s certainly a mixed bag. Venus, planet of love and life’s pleasures, is strong in her own sign of Taurus but is only just separating from an opposition (tough aspect) to Saturn. In effect this acts as a cancellation of Venus goodies – suddenly love is hard work or non-existent, life is a battleground not a funfair, a health issue returns or is slow to mend or work takes over – you get the picture. Venus’ next aspect will be a trine (harmonious) to Pluto on Wednesday (exact 16.42 BST). This may be a good aspect but it’s still a tough planet and is not for the fainthearted. The textbooks love the word “transformation”, a word I rather shy away from as for me it conjurs up magic wands and “Cinderella rags to ball gown in a nano second” images, so I prefer to use the word “transformative”. Pluto likes processes.

The Sun is also in Taurus and is writing a similar story, with a sextile (harmonious) to Neptune in his own sign of Pisces late on Wednesday, but making the opposition to Saturn on Sunday morning. Wherever you find yourself up against obstacles or involved in a slow moving situation it pays to be patient. Saturn is Lord of Time and nothing can be forced or rushed.

In the middle of all of this we have the Full Moon in Scorpio on Thursday evening which is also a partial Lunar Eclipse. This eclipse is short, lasting only 27 minutes (20.54 to 21.21 BST) and is visible throughout Europe. We won’t see the amazing phenomenon of the Moon turning red as it does in a total eclipse, but the northern half of the Moon will be darkened by the Earth’s shadow.

That’s the astronomy, but what does it mean astrologically? Again, it’s a mixed story. Some astrologers refer to eclipses as power points, others as omens of disempowerment. Either way, they tend to play a role in revealing new pictures. A shadow is thrown but lifts again. Triangular setups also feature as eclipses are about the intricate relationship between the three bodies of the Sun, Moon and Earth. Someone may be overshadowed while another emerges in a new light.

Finishing on an optimistic note the easiest aspect of the week is the Mercury – Jupiter sextile early on Wednesday morning, textbook for good news, effective decisions and any plans related to Jupiter ruled matters – travel, education, publishing and all things legal being the main ones. Traditional astrology would give extra weight to this aspect as Jupiter is still travelling through Mercury’s sign of Gemini. This is the sign of the Twins so look out for themes of doubles – or multiples!

14 January 2013 – This week’s Astrology

To me this feels like a week that falls into two definite halves. For the first half we have Venus travelling towards a conjunction with Pluto in Capricorn, exact in the early hours of Thursday. Taken alone Venus (love, pleasures, money) meeting Pluto (endings, absence, power, intensity) is not the most comfortable of pictures but, as ever, it’s too easy to tip over into alarmism.

Yes, for some it will be about putting an end to unmanageable or unhealthy setups, but it’s also a good time to look deeply at anything that is not working in your life. There is also a message here about how to put your resources of love and money to powerful use.

Add to the mix that Venus moves on to make a sextile (harmonious) to Saturn in Scorpio later the same day and a picture of greater stability starts to emerge. Note that Saturn and Pluto are currently in mutual reception (each other’s signs, Saturn now travelling through Pluto’s water sign of Scorpio, and Pluto travelling through Saturn’s earth sign of Capricorn).

This signals collaboration at work, moves that you can make to strengthen or heal a situation/relationship etc. The end of the week is great for final answers and practical agreements when the Sun and Mercury meet up in Capricorn early on Friday.

The Sun and Mercury then both change sign, moving on into Aquarius at the weekend. This opens a new chapter that is far less intense as Aquarius is an air sign (the element of the mind) associated with objectivity, realism – with a dash of genius thrown in for good measure. It’s also the sign of the collective so humanitarian issues move into the limelight, as does any concern that focuses on the “good of the whole” – in other words, what works best for most is the way forwards.

Well here it is, the week of the Big Prophecy. There are trillions of words out there on the internet about 21 December 2012 and it’s not within the scope of this blog to explore the many interpretations. They boil down to the dawning of a new spiritual era, or apocalyptic doomsday end of the world events. I read recently that some people, especially children, have even had to receive counseling to allay their fears about the latter, which is saddening. I am not an expert on the Mayan calendar but, as an astrologer, I am most definitely anti irresponsible alarmism.

My prediction for this week? The world is not going to end. I feel very safe in making this pronouncement because if it does end then we won’t be around to discuss it, and if it doesn’t then I’ll be proved right. Lol.

Seriously, back to the real point of this blog which is to pinpoint the astrological themes of the week. Mercury is opposing Jupiter today, signalling an “excess” factor. Whatever Jupiter touches, he expands, and as Mercury rules everything to do with communication it’s the perfect day to send out all your Xmas greetings, write cards, emails, and generally get in touch. Discussions are in there too – something may need a lot of debate – but just guard against exaggeration or rash commitments.

Wednesday brings the Venus – Uranus trine – weird, whacky and possibly wonderful. Although the trine is a harmonious aspect, and Venus of course is love and pleasure, just note that Uranus is all about unpredictability. Friday is the long awaited Winter Solstice as the Sun moves into Capricorn (11.13 GMT). The Sun’s first aspect is an easy one to Neptune in his own sign of Pisces but the event is also flanked by an awkward Jupiter – Saturn – Pluto dance that plays out into Saturday. Again, watch out for that over-the-top element or events that won’t fully make sense until a later date.

This line up is a reminder that this is a sensitive time of year for a lot of people. Look after yourself as well as looking out for those you care about, and enjoy a festive week.
