8 June 2015 – an action packed week, Mercury turns direct

The Astrology Blog – 8 June 2015

I take it all back about retrograde Mercury probably having done his worst as last week kicked off. That was definitely wishful thinking! Here it was one hassle and worry after another, which I won’t itemize, but the main things were linked to the classic characteristic of incorrect information. I’ll also be more aware in the future that Full Moons coinciding with a retrograde Mercury do indeed still bring things to light, but in the shape of disappointments, things that we’ve been trying to ignore, or things that we simply haven’t wanted to believe.

Also one of the main things on my watch list of “problems with transport or communication” is, as you know, anything related to phones. I went to make a phone call on Friday morning – to find that we’d been cut off. Yes, dear reader, we’d forgotten to pay the bill! The upshot of that was then having to drop everything else to dash into town – at least here in Greece they reconnect you instantly, you don’t have to wait days – but as you can imagine I wasn’t impressed with myself. Talk about should have known better!

I’m off to the UK again middle of next week and on Saturday I was on the phone to my lovely, helpful travel agent in the UK booking the return flight back to Greece. It was only after he’d taken all my card details, booked the flight – and then read the details back to me – that we realized that we’d misunderstood each other and that he’d booked the flight the wrong way around, from Greece to London! And guess what, a ticket for the right way around wasn’t available, please try nearer the time ….

Mercury is now “stationing” – getting ready to switch from retrograde to direct motion late on Thursday – so we’re reaching the end of the tunnel, but just to be on the safe side here’s the checklist to bear in mind –

• Try to operate by “re” words – review, revise, research, reappraise, rethink and so on
• Back up all your computer work
• Write things down – forgetfulness, being distracted, inattention etc can be a troublesome theme
• Getting back to ideas on the back burner
• Getting back in touch
• Rest and relaxation, give the brain some time off
• Keep options open
• Assume nothing, double check everything

What’s happening this week? This is the most cheerful picture that we’ve seen for a while as Mercury conjuncts Jupiter (08.57 BST) this morning and Venus will conjunct Jupiter tomorrow evening (20.30 BST). These are, roughly, annual events as the fast moving personal planets catch up with slower moving Jupiter (12 year cycle) once a year. (The last Mercury/Jupiter conjunction was 22 May 2012, the last Venus/Jupiter conjunction was 14 March 2012, in Taurus).

It’s always encouraging to see Jupiter in the picture. Traditional astrology calls mighty Zeus “the greater benefic” and it’s easy to see why his principle is “expansion” as he rules good fortune, opportunity, education, justice, freedom and travel. That which makes our world bigger and better is his job – ours is to learn, to stay informed and to work with the truth. The headline in the news that captured this picture best for me was on the BBC:

“Colombia’s government and Farc rebels say they have agreed on land reform, after months of talks on how to end five decades of conflict.”

These conjunctions are taking place in Gemini – the communicator of the zodiac. There’s nothing new under the sun – if you have conflict in your life the road to peace is to talk. With Venus in the picture – traditional astrology bestows Aphrodite with the title of “the lesser benefic” – the message is also to move from a position of concern and compassion. Ultimately, Jupiter is the liberator.

Note that these conjunctions fall at 23 degrees of Gemini. If you have planets at or close to this degree, in any sign but especially by conjunction or opposition (Sagittarius), these aspects will be especially significant for you.

We also have two planets changing sign at the end of the week. Mercury moves on into Cancer on Friday morning, and Mars moves on into Gemini four hours later. I’ll be talking more about these next week.

The weekend picture is the Sun in sextile (two signs apart, harmonious) to Uranus, and the aspect is exact in the early hours of Sunday morning. Hopefully we will see the positive side to Uranus – spontaneity, fun, exciting news or enjoyment to be found in groups. He is however always the loose cannon of the zodiac so even by good aspect I would still err on the side of caution in risk taking scenarios of any kind.

22 April 2013 – This week’s Astrology

What’s happening this week? Well it’s certainly a mixed bag. Venus, planet of love and life’s pleasures, is strong in her own sign of Taurus but is only just separating from an opposition (tough aspect) to Saturn. In effect this acts as a cancellation of Venus goodies – suddenly love is hard work or non-existent, life is a battleground not a funfair, a health issue returns or is slow to mend or work takes over – you get the picture. Venus’ next aspect will be a trine (harmonious) to Pluto on Wednesday (exact 16.42 BST). This may be a good aspect but it’s still a tough planet and is not for the fainthearted. The textbooks love the word “transformation”, a word I rather shy away from as for me it conjurs up magic wands and “Cinderella rags to ball gown in a nano second” images, so I prefer to use the word “transformative”. Pluto likes processes.

The Sun is also in Taurus and is writing a similar story, with a sextile (harmonious) to Neptune in his own sign of Pisces late on Wednesday, but making the opposition to Saturn on Sunday morning. Wherever you find yourself up against obstacles or involved in a slow moving situation it pays to be patient. Saturn is Lord of Time and nothing can be forced or rushed.

In the middle of all of this we have the Full Moon in Scorpio on Thursday evening which is also a partial Lunar Eclipse. This eclipse is short, lasting only 27 minutes (20.54 to 21.21 BST) and is visible throughout Europe. We won’t see the amazing phenomenon of the Moon turning red as it does in a total eclipse, but the northern half of the Moon will be darkened by the Earth’s shadow.

That’s the astronomy, but what does it mean astrologically? Again, it’s a mixed story. Some astrologers refer to eclipses as power points, others as omens of disempowerment. Either way, they tend to play a role in revealing new pictures. A shadow is thrown but lifts again. Triangular setups also feature as eclipses are about the intricate relationship between the three bodies of the Sun, Moon and Earth. Someone may be overshadowed while another emerges in a new light.

Finishing on an optimistic note the easiest aspect of the week is the Mercury – Jupiter sextile early on Wednesday morning, textbook for good news, effective decisions and any plans related to Jupiter ruled matters – travel, education, publishing and all things legal being the main ones. Traditional astrology would give extra weight to this aspect as Jupiter is still travelling through Mercury’s sign of Gemini. This is the sign of the Twins so look out for themes of doubles – or multiples!

1 April 2013 – This week’s Astrology

You’ll be glad to know that this is one of the smoothest weeks for a while. This doesn’t mean that it will necessarily be quiet or uneventful. We’re leaving some difficult astrology behind but, again, that doesn’t meant that everyone’s issues get solved overnight. However, what you can look for is a feeling of moving on, a new cycle starting, different options taking shape and therefore an understanding about what you can “do” rather than feeling that nothing will ever change. The Aries energy is very forceful – it’s the first sign of the zodiac, leader of the pack, and it’s nature is to cut to the chase, to initiate, compete – and win. In the Aries book second place is for losers!

The Aries Sun is today now separating from a square to Pluto but aligning happily with Jupiter, an aspect that is within an hour of being complete as I write. Pluto is black holes, Jupiter is wide horizons. Step firmly away from anything that has disempowered you and look at ways to make your world a bigger place. Make travel plans, sign up for a course or a workshop, get your social hat on and put definite dates in the diary. Having things to look forward to is the best spirits lifter in the world.

The big event of the week is the conjunction of the love planets, Venus and Mars, an event that happens roughly every two years. This time they meet in Aries early on Sunday morning, singling out the weekend as prime partnership time. If you want to capture the Aries vibe give your partner your undivided attention, put them first and make them feel special. If you’re unattached pay special attention to the new face coming into your line of vision, or expect key developments with someone you’re already getting to know.

Happy Easter to everyone who’s been celebrating the event this weekend – we’ll be celebrating it the first weekend of May over here.

5 November 2012 – This week’s Astrology

Yes, it’s that time again – Mercury goes retrograde tonight, 23.05 GMT and will be backtracking for the next three weeks. This means that Mercury turns into the mischief maker, especially as this time he turns around in truth freak Sagittarius and then early next week will slip back into the previous sign of Scorpio, a sign associated with hidden issues and deeper meanings. In essence:

Mercury – planet of information and communication. Under this umbrella we find language, everything connected to the written and spoken word, phones, emails, decisions, ideas, news and views.

Mercury retrograde – throws a large question mark into the mix, so be on your guard re (mis)understanding and (mis)interpretation, back up your work, and remember that language conceals (lies) as well as reveals (truth).

On a happier note we have a lovely Venus/Jupiter alignment in the air signs of Libra and Gemini, exact at 07.27 GMT Friday. So second half of the week is much lighter – fun and good news, although bear in mind that either some details will change again or you won’t enjoy the real results until Mercury gets everything back on track.
