4 May 2015 – How astrology really works, predicting earthquakes and elections, Pluto’s power of reinvention

There are still a few places left on Judy Hall’s course The Crystal Zodiac next week at The Greek Island Summer School. Scroll down past the blog to find out more about the travel bargains to Greece next Sunday 10 May.

The Astrology Blog – 4 May 2015

How does astrology really work? Holding the “as above, so below” principle – the macrocosm of celestial activity reflecting the microcosm of life here on planet Earth – it soon becomes apparent to the astrological student that we are not in the realms of clairvoyance. Accurate prediction takes place when astrological symbolism is placed within the context of a life, a relationship, a situation, a country, and so on. Such is the nature of horoscope work (the particular) as opposed to any kind of column or blog (the universal) but for both there is always a limit on how much we can “know” in advance.

I would go so far as to say that the better you are at interpreting symbols, the better astrologer you’ll be. Symbolism gets “fatter” as the moment of an astrological event moves closer (applying), the actual unfolding events putting the flesh on the bones. They get “thinner” once they’re past their point of exactitude (separating). This applies to the minutiae of life as well as the big issues. So, as an astrologer I would know for example that Sunday (yesterday) morning wouldn’t be the best of times for writing with a Mercury (words) opposition (challenge) to Saturn (delays). But I couldn’t “know” exactly what shape this suspected writer’s block would take.

As it happened it took shape in tiredness as we were woken early by a 7am church service, complete with the clanging of bells and wailing priest, which didn’t help with inspiration, then wasting time by trying to fix something on my website and giving up in frustration (definitely should’ve known better on that one), constant interruptions, including my poor little dog flying into the study and fixing my gaze appealingly. Mercury – Saturn is muteness – oh if only they could talk – but fortunately she’s white and I saw immediately that she had a wasp stuck in her coat. She’d obviously been stung but she was fine, just freaked. Something important that was posted to me ten days ago and supposed to take three days still hasn’t turned up but will hopefully turn up, along with one of my sister’s missing cats, now that the Mercury – Saturn opposition and the Full Moon have passed and are getting “thinner”! To the question, do you live your whole life by astrology, the above illustrates that knowing the astrology helps you to make sense of things or find the timing, but so often transits signal things that are out of our control anyway – such as wasps!

I ended last week’s blog with talking about the Full Moon that was exact in the early hours of this morning:
Monday 4 May
Full Moon at 13 degrees of Scorpio (04.43)
Sun square Jupiter (10.03)
To recap, I posted:

This is arguably the most difficult Full Moon of the year as Scorpio is the Moon’s sign of “fall” – the sign in which the softer and receptive lunar qualities struggle for expression. Scorpio belongs to Mars in traditional astrology, and any Moon/Mars combination is difficult (as indicated the other way around too, the Moon is “exalted” in Taurus, which in turn is Mars’ sign of detriment). This Full Moon falls in square to Jupiter (at 13 degrees of Leo) which is a classic “over the top” hallmark.

Two of Jupiter’s big concerns are religion and all things foreign. This tricky Full Moon/Jupiter symbolism is reflected in the rescue of thousands of migrants rescued in the Mediterranean and also in the shooting of the two gunmen in Dallas at a conference on cartoons of the Prophet Muhammed, organized by an anti Muslim group with the aim of making a stand for free speech. The stupidity and hypocrisy of this is hard to believe.

Another top story over the weekend that fits this rather “out of control” symbolism is Nepal. Scorpio is traditionally the sign of “death and rebirth”, and the news stories have moved from the shock and horror aspect of the massive quake and the death toll to the challenge of reconstruction and bringing aid into the country. The square to Jupiter – the Greater Benefic – fits the sadly all too common problem in disaster areas of receiving overwhelming amounts of aid but not having the means to distribute it fast enough. The rebuilding from the rubble (Scorpio/Pluto) is also an overwhelming task. Jupiter also rules all things large and all things related to long distance travel – the larger aircraft are unable to land because of damage to the airport runway.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could predict earthquakes? I looked at the horoscope for Nepal (all countries have their own charts, just as individuals do) and you can’t help but be immediately struck by the fact that Uranus is conjunct the Ascendant – the “front door” into all the houses and arguably the most sensitive part of any horoscope.
http://www.astrotheme.com/astrology/Nepal
Nepal’s chart has an Ascendant of 26.08 Aries, Uranus is at 25.19 Aries. This is an apt symbolic showing of a country on a fault line – Uranus rules shocks and splits of all kinds (physical, mental and emotional) and is the obvious astrological significator for quakes. Nepal also has a long history of volatile political instability.

All planets have their own cycles, how long they take to travel through the 12 signs, and Uranus’ is 84 years. Looking at Nepal’s history the worst earthquake happened on 15 January 1934, right in the middle of a Uranus Return – ie when Uranus had completed an 84 year circuit and had returned to his original position and the Ascendant of the Nepal horoscope. Currently Uranus is approaching 18 degrees of Aries and so the next exact Return is yet to happen (May 2017 – March 2018) but at the time of the quake Uranus was at 17.30 Aries, exactly square the other main angle of the chart, the Midheaven, at 17.24 Aries.

What else is happening this week?

All times are stated in BST

Here’s the usual link for checking the signs and degrees of your natal planets. If you have planets or angles at 13 degrees of Scorpio – or the other fixed signs of Taurus, Leo or Aquarius – then this Full Moon in square to Jupiter will be especially significant for you. If you don’t already know the context, you soon will! Look for the hidden subtext and keep a sense of proportion.

http://www.alwaysastrology.com/birth-chart-calculator.html

The next aspect this week also features the Sun –

Wednesday Sun trine Pluto (08.09)

This harmonious aspect happens at 15 degrees of the earth signs of Taurus and Capricorn respectively. The latter is important as 15 degrees of Capricorn is the position of a fixed star called Vega, considered fortunate in nature and associated with artistic talent – and luck in politics! If I could muster enough interest to check out the charts of all the candidates for the UK general election I might make a stab at prediction – but at a rather cursory level I’ll just point out that Ed Miliband is a Capricorn with a Taurus Asc and his Midheaven (career and status) at 16 degrees of Capricorn … in other words this Sun – Pluto trine is playing into his horoscope. On the other hand David Cameron’s Sun is at 15.27 Libra and on the day of the election transiting Pluto is at 15.26 Capricorn, which rather spells goodbye to power.

Politics aside, what else might the Sun – Pluto trine signify? It’s an especially potent aspect as it follows hard on the heels of the Scorpio (Pluto’s sign) Full Moon. Any lingering issues from the weekend may well be resolved at this time. Pluto rules endings of the total kind – from slamming the door shut behind him to change of the transformational kind. If you’ve got loose ends of any kind to tie up, or if you have emotional issues to deal with, this aspect signals closure and acceptance. Personal power and potential is important too so, if you need to reinvent your life, yourself, your lifestyle, your relationship and so on, now’s your chance.

My favourite article in the news this week captures the Sun – Pluto message to perfection. This resonates deeply with me as I’ve recently taken the decision to let go of the guaranteed income of media work and to follow a very strong pull towards more travelling and teaching –
“Let go of the need to know how you will achieve your vision. You likely do not know how you will create your dream, your business or your next promotion, especially not in the beginning…instead of focusing on the how, focus on the who. Get a clear mental picture and a sense of who you need to be to achieve the goal.”
“Start with why you want to achieve the goal… Let yourself get excited… This reminder of why your vision is important to you can help you set that doubt aside.”
“Make a decision and a commitment. Once you define your dream or goal, decide that you want to live this way. This may seem basic but many people never decide and commit fully… Make a commitment to yourself.”
“Be a witness to the voice of self-doubt. As you notice the voice of doubt coming up, watch the thoughts that come up like an observer rather than participating in them… Recognise that it is the voice of the part of you that wants to keep you the same and to keep you in familiar territory… simply allow the doubt to be expressed and move on. Recognise that you are not your fear.”

The second half of the week brings a change of sign –

Thursday Venus ingress Cancer (23.53)

This isn’t recognized as one of Venus’s stronger placings but I do like this combination. Venus exiting Mercury’s rather flighty sign of Gemini and entering the Moon’s sign bodes well for putting all love and emotional issues onto a more committed and authentic footing. It’s out with just talking about things, or squabbling about them, and in with showing that you care.

Finally, Mercury moves back into the picture for the coming weekend –

Saturday Mercury square Neptune (17.10)

Mercury is now in Gemini, his sign of dignity, but as already noted has had to get past Saturn’s roadblocks last weekend, and now has to struggle through Neptune’s mists. Make a point of being crystal clear in your communications and arrangements. Mercury – Neptune squares are notorious for crossed wires, the wrong information or even deliberate deception. Note that Neptune rules alcohol – listen to what comes out over a few drinks – in vino veritas! Forgetfulness is in there too – if you’re travelling (my first group of students!) don’t forget your travel paperwork and your phone chargers!

Until next week,
With love from Greece
Joanna

What’s happening this week?

All times stated are in GMT.

It’s an important start to the week as Mercury entered Scorpio on Saturday for the second time and now reaches 2 degrees of this sign, the degree at which he turned retrograde on 4 October. Mercury reaches 2 degrees of Scorpio at approximately midday today, Monday, and this means that he is now out of what is known as the “shadow” period.

What can you expect? This is a bit like a rerun of Mercury turning direct – which happened on 25 October – but with bells on. In other words, any matter that has been time consuming, confusing or hampered by outside factors in the last few weeks will now reach a major point of clarification or even closure. Expect that moment of achievement or finding yourself on the home stretch of a challenging project or a hard won battle. This event can also signal that sense of reaching the end of the tunnel, that moment of knowing that you’ve come through to the other side, either to leave something behind or to start afresh. Expect to make decisions or to have them made for you.

This picture will be especially poignant for you if you have natal planets or angles in the early degrees of Scorpio, or in the other fixed signs (Taurus, Leo and Aquarius). Don’t forget that if you don’t know the position of your natal planets you can find them in a matter of minutes by entering your date, place and time of birth into a chart calculator, such as this one:
http://www.alwaysastrology.com/birth-chart-calculator.html
Mercury’s emergence from the shadows is always good news, no matter what sign he is in, but the rebirth symbolism is underlined even more strongly by the fact that Mercury marks this moment in Scorpio. This sign’s biggest strength is the ability to regenerate, to move out of the shadows and back into the light. Mercury’s first aspect will be a harmonious trine to Neptune on Wednesday (03.40) which in itself is peaceable and the stuff of pacts, truces and deep emotional connection and understanding. With Scorpio there is however always the sting in the tail. It may be gloves off if you have matters of truth to address. Say it how it is because now is the time to deal with the facts of a matter and not figments of anyone’s imagination, including our own! This is powerfully underlined by the fact that Neptune is “stationing” (in the process of turning direct after five months of retrograde motion) so again there is the message of the real message emerging.

Admitting we were wrong, finding the strength to walk away from a job or a relationship that is beyond salvation, facing up to situations that cannot be changed but only accepted – these are the kind of themes to look out for as Monday closes with an aspect that smacks of inevitability –

Monday – Mars conjunct Pluto in Capricorn (23.04)

These are Scorpio’s ruling planets – Mars being the traditional ruler and Pluto being the modern co-ruler – and this conjunction happens at 11 degrees of Capricorn. Mars is the stronger factor as he is in his sign of exaltation and his principle is action, but Pluto is a tough adversary, planet of endings and black holes. As I’ve commented before you will frequently read “transformation” as a major keyword for Pluto but it’s a word to be used carefully. Pluto’s principle may be transformative but Plutonic change usually starts with loss, absence or endings and is therefore not of the overnight sensation variety.

The threads of this theme continue to work their way through this week’s astrological tapestry as midweek brings two major aspects less than half an hour apart –

Thursday
Venus conjunct Saturn (01.03)
Thursday – Mars square Uranus (01.30)

So, the meeting of Scorpio’s planets of Mars/Pluto in Capricorn (Saturn’s sign) is followed by Venus conjunct Saturn (Capricorn’s planet) in Scorpio. No matter which way you look at it these aspects signal issues that are heavy going or which need stringent reality tests. In terms of textbook astrology Venus is love, pleasure and money, whereas Saturn rules limitations and likes saying no. Venus-Saturn aspects of any kind tend to bring us up against denial – the denial of our own feelings or that which is being denied to us. Mars in conflict with Uranus, planet of rebellion or the unexpected, may also throw another spanner in the works. Note that in relationship astrology Uranus rules splits.

This doesn’t mean that all of life’s pleasures are suddenly going to disappear or that your love life will self destruct but if you have planets or angles that align with these aspects then you are inevitably up against challenges. To summarize –

The Mars – Pluto conjunction – 11 degrees of Capricorn
The Venus – Saturn conjunction – 25 degrees of Scorpio
The Mars – Uranus square – 13 degrees of Capricorn and Aries respectively

The good news is that anything that is already in a tailspin will be hurtling towards an inevitable conclusion and the opportunity to bail out may actually be a relief. Similarly, if you’ve been having doubts about the wisdom of pursing any particular course of action, then events during the first half of this week will sort the wheat from the chaff. Look for and read the obvious signposts.

The second half of the week is much lighter as jolly Jupiter steps in –

Friday – Sun square Jupiter (03.06)

The square is an inharmonious aspect but is not so troublesome when the two planets involved are not troublemakers. Jupiter’s principle is expansion and under duress points to biting off more than you can chew, over doing things, overspending, going over the top – but quite possibly having a lot of fun in the process.

As mentioned earlier Neptune is stationing and turns direct at nearly 5 degrees of Pisces at the weekend –

Sunday
Neptune turns direct at (07.07)

Mercury is the first planet to capture this mood (Mercury trine Neptune early hours of Wednesday) and he now also makes a constructive sextile to Pluto, Sunday (13.56). As above, so below. Look out for things swimming to the surface, a turning point in any situation which has provoked mixed feelings, information that throws a new light on the viability of a major plan or events that put you in touch with your own real feelings, or someone else’s. This weekend picture feels very much like getting to grips with things and probably expending a great deal of energy but being happy with the final results.

Sunday closes with –

Venus ingress Sagittarius (19.05)

This is good news as the love planet exits Scorpio her sign of detriment and enters freewheeling fiery Sagittarius, sign of optimism, learning and travel – and I’ll be talking more about this next week.

What’s happening this week?

All times stated are in GMT.

Venus and the Sun are now travelling through Scorpio and both make that awkward quinqunx aspect to Uranus in the first half of the week –

Monday Venus quinqunx Uranus (15.05)
Wednesday Sun quinqunx Uranus (21.59)

This “blind spot” aspect occurs as planets align when they are five signs apart. Also note that Uranus himself is the planet of the unexpected and is still travelling through Aries so this conflict happens between planets that are both in the signs ruled by Mars. This cranks up the heat for potential conflict of the kind that you couldn’t possibly see coming. In other words, getting caught out by Mars stuff is high on the risk agenda. Mars is ego – be honest about your own agendas and try to be objective – and he is also energy, as is the Sun. If you’re under the weather then don’t overdo things. Listen to your body, rest up and don’t push yourself too hard. The world won’t stop turning if you cancel an appointment or a night out. The sign of Scorpio is traditionally and symbolically death and rebirth. While we may be spiritual beings having a physical experience we are also physical beings having a spiritual experience. We don’t say “keeping body and soul together” for nothing. So find the balance and if you need to recharge the batteries then the first half of this week is the time to do so.

Venus is the love planet so take it nice and steady if you’re getting to know someone new. And even if you think you know someone inside out, the reality is that we don’t know anyone inside out. Even our closest loved ones can surprise us. Also Venus rules money as well as love so be vigilant – and realistic. If you’re planning a budget for anything be aware that the hidden extras factor is likely to prove far more troublesome than you might have bargained for. However, the main theme of this week is bringing the bigger picture into focus so any kind of uncertainty is likely to be short lived.

Monday also brings a major aspect that helps things along –

Sun sextile Pluto (22.49)

The Sun in Scorpio in good aspect to Pluto, Scorpio’s co-ruling planet on his long journey through purposeful Capricorn (which just for the record started in 2008 and ends in 2023 so still many years to go) is a powerful teaming and fantastic for positive endings/new beginnings, healing of all kinds and finding the balance – such as work/life, spiritual/physical or emotional/material needs. Finding the right person to help you is key, especially for stubborn health problems or working out how to make a big change in your life.

Thursday Full Moon 14 degrees of Taurus (22.24)

This is the Moon’s best sign – she rules the water sign of Cancer but the earth sign of Taurus is her sign of “exaltation” – and it’s a picture of fertility and fruition. Financial concerns are the first to grab the spotlight. Note, however, that all Full Moons are also very much linked to “lunacy” so look out for the domestics, especially as this Full Moon is preceded by the Uranus disruption. Often this lunacy factor is related to issues coming to light. The Full Moon illuminates and brings things out of hiding. Guard against falling out with someone over money. It’s always a sensitive issue but if you’re in a money muddle of any kind, or if you need to find ways of making the cash go a lot further, now’s the time to find the practical answers.

Saturday Mercury ingress Scorpio (23.10)

This is significant as this Mercury’s ingress into Scorpio Take 2. Here’s the sequence that’s been unfolding and which is now reaching its final stages –

• 27 September Mercury entered Scorpio for the first time but was already stationing (slowing down)
• 4 October Mercury turned retrograde at 2 degrees of Scorpio
• 10 October Mercury went back into Libra
• 25 October Mercury turned direct at 17 degrees of Libra
• 8 November Mercury enters Scorpio for the second time
• 10 November (next Monday) Mercury will reach 2 degrees of Scorpio for the second time, but this time keeps moving. (This is known as the end of the shadow period – which covers the period of time between Mercury turning direct and returning to the degree at which he turned retrograde)

So, what does this all mean? Firstly look back to see what issues were important for you at the end of September and beginning of October. Either these will return or they will reach an important next stage or a conclusion. For me this is easy to see as I actually wrote the very last words of my new book on 2 October, I’ve been working on amendments since then – classic retrograde Mercury, spotting errors and making corrections, requiring a lot of close concentration and attention to detail – and now I’m on the final proof read. All writers feel at this stage that actually writing the book was the easy bit! However, Mercury (writing, books) getting back into Scorpio (witchy subjects) for the second time is perfect symbolism for wrapping up this project and I can now look forward to seeing my “baby” in print (due date 12 March 2015).
Also look out for themes of being able to make decisions related to longer standing issues, especially something you’ve been thinking about for a long time. This Mercury activity signals news that will make a difference. Also look out for all of the other usual themes connected to Mercury picking up speed, such as truth games, corrected information, answers to sticky problems, finding what you’ve been looking for or going ahead with plans or major purchases.
The rest of the weekend picture is also pretty lively as we travel towards a Venus – Jupiter aspect –
Sunday Venus square Jupiter (20.42)
The two Benefics (the good guys) coming together is usually happy news, especially for love, fun and new opportunities. The cautionary note lies in the fact that this particular alignment has something of an “over the top” quality. A square is a challenging aspect, Venus is still in Scorpio her sign of detriment and Jupiter is in big, bold Leo and hard to miss. Jupiter’s principle is expansion but under a difficult aspect this can tip over into inflation and exaggeration. Jupiter in Leo being pulled into the picture by square to a super sensitive Venus has the feel of someone loving a drama or even creating one when life gets too tame, feelings running high or touchy subjects growing arms and legs. This aspect will be applying (in the process of becoming exact) throughout the weekend so if you’re off on a Saturday night out there’s no denying that the time is right for letting your hair down, but it’s about knowing when to stop!
Similarly, with work, social or family commitments, guard against biting off more than you can chew – or more than you can realistically afford. Debt accrued at this time may be regretted so if you’re going to go out on a limb in any way make sure it’s for a reason that is really worthwhile.

This week’s Astrology – 28 April 2014

The Astrology Blog – w/b 28 April 2014

As above, so below, the astrological picture has been totally nuts for the last couple of weeks so for many people life has been at full stretch and many situations have reached that “elastic band” moment that I talked about on the 14 April blog in relation to the Grand Cross. To quote:

The bigger picture message is that whatever is at full stretch will now snap. It’s like an elastic band – you can’t stretch it forever. At some point it will ping back in your face. Tension cannot build and build without something eventually happening.

I’ve heard so many difficult stories that amply bear this out but in many cases the actual results are positive. There’s a definite theme of people clicking into action mode, to stop tolerating something that is in fact intolerable, to admit where help is needed and to set new wheels in motion. It’s a reminder of the old saying that you may not be able to change what happens but you can change your response. Even recognizing what you don’t want is a good starting point.

The final event of this rollercoaster is now unfolding as tomorrow morning brings the Solar Eclipse in Taurus.
