What’s happening this week?

We kick off with Mars changing sign, moving tomorrow from Leo to Virgo. He has a two year cycle and therefore spends approximately 2 months in each sign, and he’ll be traveling through Virgo until 7 December and then entering the next sign of Libra. Jumping ahead for a minute:

·         Note that Mars will be going retrograde at the beginning of next March

·         This means that he’ll end up spending nearly 7 months in Libra – instead of the usual 2 months

The message? Make the most of Mars moving at normal speed. He is the planet of action and effort. He is the god of war and symbolizes how we go into battle, how we fight for what we want, how we recognize the difference between letting things happen and making things happen. He is active rather than passive and without him not a lot would get done.

What’s happening this week?

Venus is poised to enter Sagittarius, the ingress happening later today at 18.55 GMT. As above, so below – often there are events that herald a planet changing sign that clearly encapsulate the new symbolism coming into play. Scanning this morning’s news one story jumped off the page, “The girl who was shot for going to school”.

We all know Venus as the love planet but she is also the universal ruler of women, and Sagittarius rules freedom, all things international, the higher mind and all things related to the pursuit of wisdom, starting with the basic human right to an education. Malala made the headlines when she was shot by the Taliban, and to read her story now is inspirational, to put it mildly. I defy you to read her story without being moved to tears:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24379018

Not only did she survive against staggering odds, she came back fighting. On her 16th birthday she made a speech at the UN headquarters in New York, with the message of: “One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.” She is described as an icon of courage and hope.

That is the serious face of Venus in Sagittarius and the message is clear – to stand up for what you believe in, to refuse to be governed by fear, to speak your truth and to allow other people to speak theirs, to understand that anything can change just by taking that first small step.

This seems all the more poignant as Mercury, planet of speech, is now slowing down in mysterious Scorpio and meets up with Saturn tomorrow evening, a conjunction that will be repeated twice more on 29 October and 26 November. It’s a theme that is in direct contrast to that of Venus/Sagittarius. Note how consecutive signs act as if they are in opposition – Scorpio is associated with emotional depths, the underworld of the human psyche, all that is hidden, instinctive and unfathomable. The following sign of Sagittarius is associated with the zinging arrows of truth, justice, faith and openness. How are these two themes battling it out in your own life?

Note also that there is, thankfully, a very playful and sociable side to Venus in Sagittarius too. This sign is exuberant and knows how to have fun. It’s one the “mutable” signs, always on the move and reaching out in every possible direction, and is linked to sport and athletics. The other news story that grabbed my attention this morning was the “Walking Works” report and a British Medical Journal study that states:

“If everyone, in England alone, did the recommended 150 minutes of moderate physical every week it would:

  • Save 37,000 lives each year
  • Prevent 6,700 cases of breast cancer
  • Stop 4,700 people getting colorectal cancer
  • Lead to nearly 300,000 fewer cases of type 2 diabetes.”

These are quite amazing statistics. Thankfully I’ve got a dog who needs walking every day!

What else? The second half of the week brings Venus square Neptune on Thursday morning – test those emotional waters before diving in and go easy on the vino on Wednesday evening – and the Sun square Jupiter on Saturday. Squares can bring friction, things not working out as planned or finding yourself at odds with loved ones so pay attention to whatever issues are raining on your parade. Otherwise, don’t be overly controlled. Sun square Jupiter is not “malefic” and is great for stress busting and having a good time, supported by the fact that it’s also the last week of Mars in fiery, life loving Leo, so stave off those winter blues and treat the weekend as a holiday as much as possible.

What’s happening this week?

The mind planet Mercury steals the headlines. This planet travels through all 12 signs once a year, never moving far away from the Sun, but because of three retrograde periods within each year his journey through each sign varies enormously in duration. At his fastest he can whizz through a sign in a couple of weeks, at his slowest the journey is a couple of months.

The latter is now in play as Mercury arrived in Scorpio yesterday but will start to slow down next week in readiness for turning retrograde on 21 October. He’ll be in Scorpio until 5 December so we’ll be talking about this placing and what it means a lot more over the next two months. For now, as ever when you have advanced warning of Mercury going retrograde no matter what the sign, the best advice is to get ahead! Any important plan, project, conversation, decision will benefit from immediate attention rather than leaving anything to chance.

What’s happening this week?

We marked the Autumn Equinox last night as the Sun entered Libra. I am not going to dwell on the tragic news headlines other than to say that the Equinox also marks the close of a very heavy cycle and the Libra lessons are now paramount.

What’s happening this week?

This is what you might call a Big Week up in the heavens as several major themes are all unfolding and finalizing at the same time. Don’t worry, next week is a lot lighter, but this is what we have to work through first:

The Grand Cross

The slower moving planets Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto are still forming an aspect pattern called a T Square. Jupiter in Cancer is opposite Pluto in Capricorn – and they are both square to Uranus in Aries.

This week this aspect pattern becomes a Grand Cross as fast moving Mercury in Libra takes up position on the fourth point. (You may remember that Venus did the same thing about a month ago)

As Mercury is currently moving quickly he makes aspects to the other three planets in succession and the Grand Cross formation lasts until the end of the week. Mercury was square Pluto over the weekend, opposes Mercury this morning and will square Jupiter in the early hours of Friday.

The most obvious interpretation is a “cross to bear” – a situation that is stuck, where people are at loggerheads with each other, or a situation that is at breaking point as tension builds and stretches everyone’s nerves. Also look out for scenarios of having to go through with something you wish you hadn’t agreed to but now have to make the best of.

On a more proactive note the arrival of talk-talk Mercury in Libra – the Scales – could be extremely helpful. This feels like a chance to thrash out differences and to arrive at new agreements. Stress can actually be reduced by involving a new person – someone to help out, to talk to, to help share the load, and so on. If nothing else Mercury in Libra is brilliant at seeing all sides to an issue and appreciating everyone’s point of view.

Saturn sextile Pluto, and Pluto turning direct

The theme of resolution is underlined by the fact that Pluto – the slowest moving planet of them all – turns direct on Friday evening, having been retrograde since the middle of April. He also aligns with serious Saturn at the weekend for the third and final time (a sextile that was exact on 27 December last year and again on 8 March.)

When it comes to change Pluto has no equal. Known as the planet of “death and rebirth” he loves to demolish in order to rebuild and he slams the door behind him. This turning point could easily relate to a matter that’s been unfolding for months. There’s a sense of reaching the end of the road with anything that is simply no longer sustainable, the “I can’t do this anymore” or “someone else has had too much of my power and now I want it back again.” Note also that these two planets are in “mutual reception” – currently occupying each other’s signs, Saturn being in Pluto’s sign of Scorpio and Pluto being in Saturn’s sign of Capricorn, strengthening the pact between them. The old order changeth.

Venus conjunct Saturn, sextile Pluto

The love planet Venus also travelling through Scorpio plays into this scenario, meeting up with Saturn in Scorpio on Wednesday evening and aligning with Pluto a few hours later. This can play out in two ways – love gets serious, intense and needs huge commitment, or a love issue comes screeching to a halt in front of a great big concrete wall. Love triangles will be especially sensitive.

The Full Moon in Pisces

We could say, in fact, that everything will be super sensitive midweek! The Full Moon is traditionally a time of enlightenment, insights and fruition. However she is also notorious for domestics and in Pisces, arguably the most sensitive of all the signs, the emotional tides will be high and real feelings will swim to the surface. This sign also rules alcohol so be careful what you do/say/agree to after a few glasses of inhibition loosening wine! If you’re madly in love and cracking open the champagne you should be fine, but if you want to raise a touchy subject with anyone/need to stay in control then I’d go for the soda water. Finally – drink/drive is always a no-no of course but this week it’s a NO-NO. Stay safe.
