Nidri is on the island of Lefkada – or Lefkas – one of the Ionian islands, situated on the west coast of Greece just above Cephalonia and approximately 70 miles south of Corfu.
Nidri is often referred to as a fishing village in the travel brochures but that title is somewhat misleading. It is still relatively small – you can walk the length of the village in about 20 minutes – but it is the main resort of this mountainous and stunningly beautiful island, with plenty of shops, bars and traditional tavernas. Only a few years ago you would have to go into the main town of Lefkada for banking facilities but there is now a branch of Alpha Bank in Nidri and numerous cash points.
Nidri can be very busy during the months of July and August as it is very popular with the sailing community and the Italians alike! But in May, June, September and October, Joanna’s favourite months, the village is much quieter and very relaxed. This is when she holds the Greek Island Summer School.
Coming to Nidri
The island is adjoined to mainland Greece by a causeway so the transfer time from Preveza airport to the village of Nidri is just 40 minutes by road. Flights are on Sundays from Gatwick, and Manchester. Flight time is approximately three hours. In high season, mid June to mid September, Olympic Holidays also offer flights on Thursdays.
A package deal is often the most inexpensive option for your visit, as it includes accommodation in Nidri and transfers to and from the airport. Prices vary so, depending on the tour operator, standard of accommodation, time of year etc, costs for flights, transfers and accommodation will generally come to between £300 – 400.
As with all holiday bookings it is well worth shopping around a bit to see what is on offer. However, there is no need to spend hours trawling the internet, simply click here to contact Joanna directly for the best deals as she constantly updates the travel information and can point you in the right direction.
To give you an idea, however, there are several family run hotels in Nidri. There’s Yiannis Hotel, located just a couple of minutes away from the house, on the seafront with a beautiful view of Nidri harbour, pool and poolside bar, air conditioning and with the option of self catering. There is also the Athos Hotel on the seafront, newly refurbished and immediately next door to the house. The hotel has a really good sized swimming pool and runs the popular Tree Bar overlooking the beach. In high season there are also Demetra Studios, a beautifully maintained complex of rooms, again on the seafront with pool and pool bar.
If you are feeling rich or just plain extravagant Lefkada now has its first five star hotel – The Ionian Blue – which is situated about five minutes drive out of Nidri, so you will need to include car hire in your package. If you are interested ask Joanna for more information. The hotel is truly in a league of its own with stunning views of the Ionian sea and the Onassis island of Skorpios, an option of private chalets with their own pools, restaurants, spa etc – a real treat.
There are all kinds of boat trips and excursions at very reasonable prices and you can also hire a car and visit the glorious golden beaches and villages all around the island.
Joanna strongly recommends that you book the places mentioned or to consult her first.
You can also consider the option of flight only but please factor in the journey to Nidri by taxi from Preveza airport will cost about 60 Euros. Excellent accommodation, along the seafront, can be arranged at a cost of approximately 35 Euros a night for single or shared occupancy – twin bedded or double bed rooms, en suite, air con, fridge, cooking facilities, stunning sea views.
Coming to Nidri from outside the UK
If you are travelling from places other than the U.K. you will find that there are limited services into the local airport of Preveza – also called “Aktio” – with the exception of Holland, Denmark and Sweden who all have direct flights. If you are coming via Athens you will need to book a bus ticket. The journey takes just under five hours and costs about 30 Euros each way.
