The New Year Astrology Blog – w/b 30 December 2013
Do hope everyone is enjoying the Christmas break – and that you weren’t caught out by that horrible Mars – Uranus opposition on Christmas morning! Of course I read the news in the UK of the appalling weather, uprooted trees, power cuts and thousands stranded at airports/railway stations with no hope of getting to where they were supposed to be. What a nightmare.
The astrological picture for New Year’s Eve tomorrow gets off to an equally unpromising start with a punch up going on as Mars moves in to square (challenge) the Mercury – Pluto conjunction. Here’s the sequence:
· Mars square Pluto
· Mercury conjunct Pluto
· Mercury square Mars
This unfolds between approximately 01.00 – 15.00 GMT. Mercury conjunct Pluto is tricky in itself. Remember that Mercury is Hermes, winged messenger of the gods, and rules everything to do with communication and transport. Pluto is god of the underworld and loves to pop up to create merry hell. He loves cancelling things. So, again, this is a difficult picture in terms of getting to where you had originally planned to be if you’re living in any area that’s being afflicted by bad weather. If you absolutely have to travel go well prepared. I’ll quote you my garage guy from Lefkas town – “a car doesn’t have four tyres, it has five”. Now could be a good time to check that the spare is in good nick! (Sara & Paul, lol!!)
Pluto tends to create absence – so look out for people being taken out of your NYE picture through illness or force of circumstance. Also look out for friends or loved ones who have had bad news or who may go on a downer at this time of year. I personally love NYE, it brings out the optimist in me, but we all know that it can affect many people in the opposite way.
Mars, god of war, loves to stir things up which can sometimes be just what’s needed, but in square to the Mercury-Pluto this feels more like antagonism. Bear in mind that Mars is currently on an unusually long journey through Libra – his sign of detriment – which doesn’t help much either. Libra belongs to sweet Venus and enjoys sharing, whereas Mars is the trailblazer, loves independence and tends to get pushy when others don’t agree. Look out for arguments about who wants to go where, and with whom!
Please note that a lot of this picture applies to this evening, as these aspects are “applying” – becoming exact. The sequence ends at 3pm tomorrow UK time from which point they will be “separating” – moving away. This is good news for New Year’s Eve itself. It suggests recuperation, time to create plan B, a storm (literal or metaphorical) blowing over or the chance to get difficult work or personal commitments out of the way earlier in the day so that you are then free to enjoy doing what you want to do.
What about a more positive spin on this troublesome trio? Here’s one – I have a telephone appointment at 11.00 GMT (Mercury) to talk to an osteopath who happens to be a Scorpio (the sign co-ruled by Pluto). Note that every sign rules a part of the body and the Mercury-Pluto conjunction falls in Capricorn, the sign that rules bones. This is because I need more information about how to treat a neck injury. I am not expecting the answers to be easy or obvious but it’s the beginning of digging deeper. I’m also interested in learning more about what I shouldn’t do – how to avoid that troublesome Mars (rules pain) making things worse rather than better. The positive face of Scorpio/Pluto is the archetype of the healer. Watch out for significant conversations with or events for the Scorpio in your life!
New Year’s Day itself brings the New Moon in Capricorn, exactly conjunct Pluto. This means that the Sun, Moon and Pluto are all linked together at 11 degrees of Capricorn – and, of course, they’re all square to Mars. Here’s the sequence:
· Sun conjunct Moon (the New Moon) – 11.15 GMT
· Moon conjunct Pluto – 11.45 GMT
· Sun conjunct Pluto – 18.55 GMT
· Sun square Mars – just as we enter 3 January, exact at 00.15 GMT
New Moon = new brooms that sweep clean, fresh starts of all kinds, and with Pluto so powerfully in this picture we’re looking at the kind of fresh starts that are total and uncompromising. Pluto is the planet of death and rebirth – the textbooks love the word transformation although I prefer “transformative” as Plutonic changes tend to be long processes. The end result may appear to be sudden as an old skin is shedded but the dying off has actually been happening for a long time. If you have personal planets or angles at or close to 11 degrees of the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) this picture will be especially potent for you.
Finally, Jupiter is in the picture too as the New Moon falls opposite this planet, Jupiter currently being retrograde and working his way back through 16 degrees of Cancer. We have Mercury opposite Jupiter early on Friday and the Sun opposite Jupiter late on Sunday. This adds the blessings in disguise element so don’t kick against anything that at first appears to be a drama, or freak out at unwelcome change being somehow forced upon you. Many endings at this time will in fact turn out to be liberations, a crucial part of the never ending journey of personal development or a seven league boot step on the road to the life you wish for yourself. Compare the picture of the beginning of the week to the end of the week – and then see how far you’ve come.
Whatever your plans for tomorrow have fun and, as always, stay safe – Happy New Year everyone!
