The Astrology Blog w/b 3 March 2014
You may remember that I ended last week’s blog with the checklist for Mercury turning direct:
Important information comes to light
Rumours are squashed when the truth outs
You find the right person to deal with the problem
People get back to you or make decisions
Computer glitches are solved/disputes are settled
Lost objects are found
Mercury switched back to forwards motion in Aquarius on Friday afternoon but, no, my printer cable has not reappeared (yet) but yes, important information came to light. Literally. Just in case you were wondering Greece is not warm all year around and we have a wet, cold winter that is not that much different from the UK. We decided against using the central heating in the new house because of the extortionate cost of the diesel to run it (no mains gas on the island) and were using the open log fire instead. On Friday afternoon, unbeknownst to us for a few hours, a chimney fire started. It was only when it stopped pouring with rain, and when all the power went out, that we realized that there was a problem. You may also remember that in last week’s blog I talked about the fact that the strong Uranus/Aquarius theme signaled that “the usual theme of the unexpected or dramatic may well be more obvious”…
I have noticed many times that Mercury tends to deliver a last kick as he turns direct and this one was a classic. Any astro textbook will tell you that a retrograde Mercury signals “problems with communication and transport”. Imagine ringing the fire brigade, discovering that nobody spoke a word of English except “fire?”, and then having to lapse into another language (my Greek is basic, fine for day to day stuff, and my scrambled brain had to somehow go into overdrive) to give directions to a house up a mountain 20 minutes drive away from the fire station while smoke was billowing out of the roof! I had also forgotten to charge up my mobile earlier in the day and had just enough battery to make this call and rally help from nearby friends. Thank heavens for friends (who are located in the 11th house, natural house of Aquarius) especially my Greek friend Katerina who took over re giving driving instructions. Never have I been so relieved to see the cavalry come over the hill!
Also thank heavens for Mike who was actually a fireman in one of his previous lives and was straight up a ladder with a hose – he was the hero of the hour. It took three hours to get it all under control and the firemen were brilliant, another item on the list coming good – you find the right people for the job. So, that will pay me to move into a house under a retrograde Mercury! It turned out that the chimney lining was damaged, the cladding was not of the fireproof kind and there are all kinds of wiring problems going on. The workmen have been here all day! We were saved from a full scale blaze because of the torrential rain having damped everything down, a lovely showing of savior Jupiter trine the Sun in Pisces/New Moon in Pisces (sign of mutable water) in the early hours of Saturday. I feel incredibly lucky.
Hey ho, nothing like a brush with disaster to blow your routine to bits but this week’s astrology is very encouraging for restoring order and moving on. This evening brings the Sun sextile (harmonious) Pluto. You’ll often read the word “transformation” for this planet – he is symbolic death/rebirth – but I prefer the word “transformative” as this has less of the magic wand connotation. Plutonic changes tend to be a process rather than something instantaneous, often bringing situations in which you have to start somehow or somewhere from scratch. For us it’s a big clean up job, restoring order and getting rid of the smell!
As this aspect coincides with Mercury getting back on track this bodes well for invoking the positive qualities of powerful Pluto. If he could speak he would now be saying, ok, let’s start again. The Sun in magical and mystical Pisces would be saying, rescue the dream. Change for the better, healing, starting new projects or wiping the slate clean – anything that smacks of out with the old and in with the new fits the bill.
The other two main events of the week underline this message. Firstly, Venus finally changes sign. Venus would normally change sign about every four weeks but because of a long retrograde period she’s been in Capricorn since the beginning of November. This was starting to get seriously boring. Venus is love, pleasure and the sweet things of life, whereas Capricorn is one of Saturn’s signs, planet of effort, endurance and obstacles. In essence, Venus has been making very hard work of love and life! It has been a long grind, you may feel as if you’ve been working on a relationship or a project for far too long, or that your results have been very hard won, or that it’s two steps forwards and one step back. You may feel that you haven’t been having enough fun or that money has been far too tight. You may feel that life has become all work and no play, or that work itself needs to be a lot more interesting.
Venus moves on into Aquarius on Wednesday (the ingress being exact at 21.04 GMT) and will travel through this sign until 6 April. True, this is Saturn’s other sign, but also co-ruled by Uranus. It’s also an air sign, known for conviviality, curiosity and innovation. This could be a breath of fresh air. Get together with the friends you haven’t seen for weeks, throw parties or join groups. In business get networking, revamp your website and link up to other people’s. Looking for work? What grabs you? You spend a lot of hours every week doing a job so if you want to live the life you love and love the life you live there’s no better time for branching out – or tunneling out.
Love issues all spin around the friendship factor. Focus on more on the things you enjoy doing together. Unattached? Don’t be tempted to override compatibility issues. It doesn’t matter how gorgeous someone is, Venus in Aquarius is somewhat disdainful of lust. She’s far more interested in the meeting of minds and what you have in common. As Aquarius is also the sign of technology as well as friendship/groups this is actually the ideal time for internet dating. Invoke the objectivity of Aquarius and go shopping for what you really want in a partner.
Finally we have Jupiter switching back to direction motion on Thursday (exact at 10.43 GMT). He’s been retrograde since 7 November, just a couple of days after Venus entered Capricorn, so it’s a new cycle in more ways than one. Jupiter is the planet of luck and good fortune, and his main principle is expansion, so wherever your world has become small or limited now’s the time to think “bigger and better”. With Jupiter turning around in Cancer, sign of home, family and nurture, this may start at the literal level of making bigger and better use of your living space, or making new arrangements for those who need care.
At a more universal level Jupiter rules travel, education, publishing and legal concerns, so turning points in connection to any of these issues are exceptionally well starred. Jupiter is also the planet of faith and freedom. There have been a lot of tough situations in the last few months that have seemed designed to challenge our beliefs or keep us trapped. If you’re aware of being in any kind of victim role then Jupiter’s turning point is doubly important but the bigger picture message is to believe in yourself. There’s a huge world out there and you belong to it.
The true beauty of astrology is that it is a mirror, always reflecting back to us the true state of affairs and reminding us that things really do happen when they are meant to and for a reason. As above, so below. The picture now is like The Chariot in the Tarot. Settle yourself back into the driving seat, pick up the reins, steer your way out of an obstacle course and into wide new horizons, liberate yourself from unhealthy pattern or relationships, say yes to new opportunities, rekindle enthusiasm and optimism. This may all sound like a tall order but start by being lovingly true to yourself, focus on moving forwards and trust that the right signposts will appear. Jupiter’s on the job!
