28 September 2015 – Supermoon Eclipse, Mercury in reverse and Neptune’s fuzzy edges – what’s the real picture?

The Astrology Blog 28 September
All times posted in BST

Eclipses hunt in pairs – a Solar Eclipse and a Lunar Eclipse – two weeks apart (ie at the time of the New and Full Moons) and approximately every six months. We’re now just leaving the current Eclipse season so the next ones won’t be until March and September 2016, February and August 2017.

Regular readers will know my view on Eclipses, symbolism that I’ve seen expressed countless times. In brief, they tend to play a role in revealing new pictures. A shadow is thrown but lifts again and some changes may be linked to bringing things out of hiding. Triangular setups, such as affairs or being in competition in business, are sensitized as eclipses are about the intricate relationship between the three bodies of the Sun, Moon and Earth. Someone is inevitably overshadowed while another emerges in a new light – a flavor of death/rebirth symbolism.

These kinds of scenarios are especially applicable to individuals – or nations – with planets or angles at the same place as the Eclipse sign/degree.
Eclipse Stories

I’ve been given permission by one of my students to tell her story. The Solar Eclipse two weeks ago fell at 20 degrees of Virgo, and therefore almost exactly conjunct her natal Moon at 21 degrees of Virgo. She has been going through a long and tortuous breakup with her partner of the last few years. After many months of strange behavior and then disappearance, with no explanation or subsequent news of his whereabouts, the new picture was revealed on Facebook last week – in the shape of a picture of him with his partner and newly born baby… hard to put into words how this has impacted on her but in her own words the key thing was that she felt totally disempowered. This is a key factor wrapped up in Eclipse symbolism, the shifting of power, as in the example quoted last week of the eclipse at the heart of Edward’s abdication that showed powerfully in George’s chart – who was then of course crowned in Edward’s place.

Timing – note that this is actually textbook timing. Often the symbolism of an Eclipse will show at or very close to the actual date, but in terms of being a link in a chain of events then the showing is nearly always in the following two weeks – ie before the next lunation. The symbolism is also spot on, with the Eclipse falling on her Moon who rules women, pregnancy and babies. I said I didn’t expect this would make her feelany better and she said no, it didn’t! But it might do, in time.

The Lunar Eclipse
The news is full of pictures and information about this Eclipse and Supermoon. Astronomically, the Moon takes an elliptical orbit around the Earth (shape of a rugby ball rather than a football) and a supermoon occurs when the Moon is in the closest part of its orbit to Earth, meaning it appears larger in the sky. If you were up in the middle of the night in the UK you would have seen the astonishing phenomenon of a huge moon turning red –

Monday Full Moon/Total Lunar Eclipse at 5 degrees of Aries (03.52)

Astrologically, this event is a link in the chain of events that have resulted in the migrant crisis. This morning’s headlines focus on the power issues – basically, the strain between Russia and the West as Putin wants Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad to stay and everyone else wants to kick him out. Eclipses often carry a “hard to believe” factor – and in this instance it’s how anyone can voice support for a President whose country has been in a state of civil war since 2011, which translates into the death of more than 200,00 Syrians so far and 4 million + already seeking asylum abroad and many more on the move.

What does the Eclipse mean for you?

This Eclipse will be significant for you if you have planets or angles at or close to 5 degrees of Aries, or in the opposite sign of Libra. Here’s the usual link to check the position of your natal planets in your own horoscope:

http://www.alwaysastrology.com/birth-chart-calculator.html

You can also enter your data into this calculator. Both make all the necessary time zone adjustments for you so simply enter your date, place and local time of birth, eg if you’re born in BST or outside of the UK the calculator will take that automatically into account:
http://astro.cafeastrology.com/cgi-bin/astro/natal

This option lists all your planets and angles rather than bringing up the visual of the horoscope, so for non astrologers it’s a lot easier to use. It also gives you what they call a natal chart report which is an interpretation of all of the planetary aspects in your horoscope. Please read these with a large pinch of salt! They are obviously highly generalized which means that they’ll contain some information that may well apply to you but they’ll fall short of offering you interpretations that would relate only to your own individual chart.

Retrograde Mercury Stories

The big event is that Mercury is still retrograde. I said a while ago “look out for your Librans” and nearly every story that’s been sent to me has come from a Libran, or someone with Moon in Libra. Serious and painful stuff has been going on, including an eviction and an abortion. Otherwise there’s the usual havoc. My brother in law (Sun Libra) tried to download some music on the computer only to find that he’d opened an unstoppable flood of unwanted files all of extremely dubious content, the computer was rendered useless and had to be unplugged and taken into the shop for a major clean up. He’s still waiting to get it back.

One of my best friends (Moon Libra) offered to choose and order a new television for me, a request I said yes to before Mercury turned retrograde I hasten to add, but which for several reasons got delayed. The story then resulted in his having to enter bank data into a Greek site. With a language mix up the bank card wasn’t recognized and was cancelled. He then had to go into the bank in person complete with all the original paperwork from the date when the account was first opened, and answer a barrage of questions in order to prove that it was him on the website and not someone trying to hack into his account! Other stories –

This week has been like walking through molasses … clients late, emails not received, Skype down worldwide on Monday, and a whole day of offices and queues in order to secure a temporary driver’s license (Sun Libra)

And on a lighter note this one made me laugh out loud –

I ordered Aspects in Astrology by Sue Tompkins, only to receive something else entirely, an 80’s book on Stress and Relaxation with a Jane Fonda type woman on the front!! And guess what they have now told me the book isn’t in stock, but as a gesture of good will I can keep the book that I don’t want, great! (Sun Libra)

And there’s more to come….

Mercury is the key player this week, along with the Sun and Neptune – here’s the sequence –

Wednesday
Mercury quinqunx Neptune (04.19) and Sun conjunct Mercury (13.39)
Thursday
Sun quinqunx Neptune (04.07)

This formation happens with the Sun and Mercury at 7 degrees of Libra and Neptune at 7 degrees of Pisces. They are therefore five signs or 150 degrees apart and forming the aspect of a quinqunx, awkward by name and awkward by nature.

If there is any such thing as a high spot in Mercury’s retrograde journey it’s this conjunction with the Sun. Mercury is the Sun’s closest traveling companion as he is never found further than 27 degrees away from the Sun. For this reason, in the horoscope, Mercury is always either in the same sign as the Sun, or in the preceding or following sign. So, during the periods of Mercury being retrograde, he makes a series of three conjunctions with the Sun that play out over a period of four months, the middle one being the retrograde contact. Here’s the sequence –

Sun conjunct Mercury
• 23 July at 0 degrees of Leo
• 30 September at 7 degrees of Libra
• 17 November at 25 degrees of Scorpio

If you want to “retrodict” (as opposed to predict) then you can look back at the last cycle which was –
8 December 2014 at 16 degrees of Sagittarius
• 30 January at 10 degrees of Aquarius
• 10 April at 20 degrees of Aries

When any planet is conjunct the Sun to within 17 minutes of arc (ie just over a quarter of a degree) it is said to be “cazimi”, rendered extra powerful by being in the heart of the Sun. So these conjunctions with Mercury tend to throw up important news, information or insights. Pay special attention to unfolding events or the conversations that you have midweek as they’re likely to be pivotal with regards to current plans or life changes. It’s like a little window of opportunity or a gleam of light in the dark that will be helpful until Mercury turns direct again – which will be at the end of next week.

The only problem this time is that the conjunction is bracketed by those awkward aspects to Neptune. This signals that all the usual issues associated with retrograde Mercury – notably communication mishaps of all kinds – are likely to be intensified. The quinqunx aspect itself is associated with blind spots and all issues of ne’er the twain shall meet variety, and Neptune under any difficult aspect symbolizes confusion, distortion, deception, idealization and generally being conned or left to flounder in a total fog of misunderstandings or overwhelming feelings. Sounds like a real bundle of laughs so far doesn’t it! But do take care, question your own judgment rather than racing on regardless, buy yourself time for important decisions, try not to drown your sorrows (Neptune rules booze) too much, and try to get plenty of sleep. Difficult Neptune stuff is classic for insomnia and also for anxieties that grow arms and legs in the absence of any real answers.

On that note this week may feel very much like some kind of impasse but don’t be fooled. Nothing stays the same forever and there’s a lot churning under the surface. Next week brings some major astrological activity, including Mercury getting back on track, and even the things that seem hopelessly stuck could start moving on apace, so make the most of any downtime currently available to you.
Until next week, stay safe,
With love from Greece

21 September – Surprises, delays, duties and dilemmas – and how to survive them!

The Astrology Blog 14 September
Feedback from last week
Last Thursday at 07.57 BST we had a major clash between two giants, Jupiter opposite Neptune, a lineup that happens once every 13 years. To quote from last week’s blog –
Whenever Jupiter is in the picture you can start with the word “BIG”. Neptune is also associated with inflation, being god of the seas in all their depth and boundlessness. So this Jupiter – Neptune opposition signals feelings and scenarios that are overwhelming, over the top or which have the propensity to become blown out of all proportion. Big feelings, big dreams, big emotional conundrums – etc.
I should have added that these major astrological events can also and often do show out in the world in a literal way. As above, so below. A matter of hours before this opposition was exact – so when it was “applying” and therefore at its most powerful – Chile suffered an 8.3 quake, the strongest recorded in the world for 2015 so far. This triggered tsunamis with waves up to 4.7m/15 feet high, smaller waves reaching as far as Alaska and warnings sent as far as New Zealand. One million people had to leave their homes and at least 11 people died. The quake lasted for more than three minutes and there were dozens of aftershocks. That must have been absolutely terrifying. I’ve been in a 7.0 quake that lasted 45 seconds and even that felt as if it were never going to stop, and unless you’ve experienced liquefaction it’s hard to believe how the walls and floor of a supposedly solid building can suddenly turn into rippling jelly.

Hungary
The other horrible drama that captured the Jupiter – Neptune conflict was the use of tear gas and water cannons in Hungary. Neptune rules gases of all kinds (From Be Your Own Astrologer – Neptune was discovered in 1846 coinciding with advancement in photography, film and pharmaceuticals, notably anesthetics. Gas was replacing oil for lighting, bringing street lights and a night life of brightly lit bars). UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was reported to be shocked at this barbaric means of forcing migrants back from the border.
There were also moving images of humanity and hope, such as a series of photos showing a Danish police officer clowning around with a young girl which were shared thousands of times. One Facebook user commented: “Why can’t the world always be like this. These moments are so rare that we require to share them around.”

A Local Hero – Steve Watson
You can’t fail to be impressed by this guy, a former soldier and father of three:
“I have got young children and it is not possible to see what we are seeing and not do something. We must remember it was only 70 years ago there was a mass exodus of people around Europe as a result of the Second World War and it has not done us any harm, in fact it has enriched us. We need to be less worried about outsiders and get off our backsides to help because we are a global village now.”
Steve left a few days ago on his mercy mission with a co-driver in a van loaded with donations of dried foods like cup-a-soup, coffee, skimmed milk and baby food, nappies, first aid kits, anti bacterial gel, mosquito repellent, plastic plates, cups and cutlery, toothpaste, toothbrushes and sanitary towels. Just before midnight last night he posted “mission accomplished – shattered”. He’s already said that there will be another trip and is still fundraising, for donations and for fuel costs. I’ve donated to his cause, and with his capacity for compassion and empathy I’d also put money on his having a strong Jupiter – Neptune theme in his own horoscope! If you’d like to help him along the way here’s the link:

What’s happening this week?
All times posted in BST
The first half of the week is by far the easiest. Venus still blazing away in fiery Leo takes the lead –
Wednesday Venus trine Uranus (05.01)
This aspect is “applying” and therefore at its strongest throughout the next couple of days. We always think of Venus firstly as Aphrodite, goddess of love, but she also rules money and all material needs and sensual pleasures. In harmonious aspect to Uranus – planet of the collective and humanitarian concerns – this is fantastic astrology for supporting any cause close to your heart.
At a more personal level Venus – Uranus aligning harmoniously and in the fire signs of Leo/Aries signals group events, fun, surprises, spontaneity, doing something different – and attractions of the unexpected and electrical kind! If you’ve got relationship issues, good bad or indifferent, to address then sooner rather than later is good. This message is underlined as this lively aspect is followed on the same day by the Autumn Equinox, when the Sun arrives at 0 degrees of Libra, sign of partnership, and in a positive aspect to get it together Saturn –
Wednesday Sun ingress Libra (09.22) and Sun sextile Saturn (19.37)

This is also important as this is Saturn’s first aspect since he changed sign last Friday, embarking upon a two year journey through the third fire sign of Sagittarius. Here’s my take on this combination from Be Your Own Astrologer
Saturn in Jupiter’s masculine sign presents the conflict of two opposing forces or beliefs. Saturn’s nature is to restrict, Jupiter’s is to learn and liberate, so here we find the serious philosopher, philanthropist or freedom campaigner. Che Guevara, Bruce Kent (CND) and Abraham Lincoln all represent the battle for the sanctity of human life in their own way. Those with this natal placing have to learn how to do battle with authority in life, and how to find the middle ground between claiming their own space vs their responsibility to others.
As this new Saturn cycle kicks off we can see all too clearly how the world needs to take humanitarian issues (Jupiter) more seriously (Saturn) even if they’re not on our own doorstep. At a more personal level I like this combination for all moves related to finding and pursuing your true vocation, for anything that’s a two year plan and for structuring your life in a way that is in keeping with your deepest beliefs and sense of purpose. For some the Sun – Saturn sextile will be about with whom you’ll go forwards, as well as how, and possible about who will have an especially significant role to play in your life over the next two years. Many matters will need the longer view.
All of this is unfolding against the backdrop of retrograde Mercury, who gets the second half of the week off to a difficult start –
Thursday Mercury square Pluto (23.31)
Friday Pluto turns direct at 13 degrees of Capricorn (07.56)
This is the second of three squares at 13 degrees of Libra/Capricorn – the first one was 9 September and the third will be 22 October – so if you have natal planets or angles at or close to this degree of these signs, or the other cardinal signs of Aries or Cancer, then this will be an especially sensitive time for you. Here’s the usual link to check the position of your natal planets in your own horoscope:
http://www.alwaysastrology.com/birth-chart-calculator.html
If this site is new to you note that when you enter your data – date, place and time of birth – you’ll then be able to pull up a visual of your horoscope. You don’t have to understand this in its entirety – just note if you have any planets at or close to any degree and sign that is currently significant. You can do this by hovering your mouse over each planet, and the information will show in the box at the top.
Back to Mercury square Pluto, this is a contradictory union to say the very least. Mercury has only just turned retrograde but Pluto is turning direct, so there is a real push-pull quality that is now reaching some kind of crunch point. Mercury is the communication planet and under his umbrella we find information, decisions, news, views and so on. Pluto is often referred to as the planet of transformation, which is something of a euphemism for his death/rebirth symbolism, and especially by a difficult aspect like the square signals endings or an unmistakable “no”. Look out for having to scrap a plan and start again and guard against trying to force any kind of round pegs into square holes. It won’t be worth the effort and could cost you dearly. Note also that the matters on my usual checklist for retrograde Mercury will be super sensitive –
• Try to operate by “re” words – review, revise, research, reappraise, rethink and so on
• Buy yourself time wherever needed
• Write things down – forgetfulness, being distracted, inattention etc can be a troublesome theme
• Back up all your computer work
• Getting back to ideas on the back burner
• Getting back in touch
• Rest and relaxation, give the brain some time off
• Keep options open
• Assume nothing, double check everything
• When in doubt, check it out – second hand opinions are a dead cert for getting hold of the wrong end of the stick – and don’t believe everything you hear
• Keep a close watch on all belongings – especially keys or anything linked to communication such as phones, laptops, tablets, cameras etc and don’t even think about buying new ones for the time being
• The same for cars – never buy any mode of transport under a retro Mercury
• Plan any journey with extra care and don’t trust to luck
• Kill your speed when driving – allow extra time for getting there slowly but safely
• Take extra care with form filling/signing on dotted lines
• No matter how certain a situation might seem there is a good chance that it will morph into something else over the next couple of weeks – the “x” factor is at work
Themes of delays and frustration are underlined yet again by another major astrological event at the end of the week. Mars, planet of action, changes sign but immediately squares up to Saturn –
Friday Mars ingress Virgo (03.19)
Saturday Mars square Saturn (02.13)
This is like a major roadblock or traffic lights stuck on red. Barriers, however, will be there for a reason, even if that is not apparent at the time. Be prepared to put personal desires on hold for a while if you find yourself in conflict with those around you, or cut a lot of slack for someone who’s unable to honor a promise or who lets you down in any other way. Expect to come up against matters that are beyond anyone’s immediate control or simply having to allow a lot more time than you’d expected for the things you want to do. Also don’t hesitate to pull out of any arrangement or decision that you now know was bad for you in some way or unrealistic. Mars in fastidious Virgo (one of Mercury’s signs) will be guiding us to look at the minutiae so – especially with a retrograde Mercury too – don’t gloss over the details that you suspect may come back to haunt you!
Finally and just for good measure we have a Lunar Eclipse building up over the weekend –
Monday (28th) Full Moon/Total Lunar Eclipse at 5 degrees of Aries (03.52)
Eclipses hunt in pairs, so two weeks ago we had the Solar Eclipse –
Sunday 13th September New Moon/Solar Eclipse at 20 degrees of Virgo (07.42)
As I’ve commented before, some astrologers refer to eclipses as power points, others as omens of disempowerment. Either way, they tend to play a role in revealing new pictures. A shadow is thrown but lifts again and some changes may be linked to bringing things out of hiding. Triangular setups, such as affairs or being in competition in business, are sensitized as eclipses are about the intricate relationship between the three bodies of the Sun, Moon and Earth. Someone is inevitably overshadowed while another emerges in a new light. Again, we have a flavor of death/rebirth symbolism.
So it’s a full on week, to put it mildly! Looking ahead though it might help to know that next week is extraordinarily quiet in the aftermath of the Eclipse, so no matter what you have to deal with now there should be the time and space to recover, to process things and to make the necessary changes.
For serious astrology students read of for an extra section on eclipses,
Until next week,
With love from Greece
Joanna

Eclipses
• A Solar Eclipse – occurs when the Sun is obscured by the shadow of the Moon at the time of a New Moon.
• A Lunar Eclipse – occurs when the Moon is obscured by the shadow of the earth at the time of a Full Moon.
Looking at examples from the past is often a really good way to deepen our understanding of any kind of astrological event. Here’s my favourite teaching example from my first book, Astrology for Today (which came out in 2003 so these days you can get a copy for virtually nothing on Amazon!)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=astrology+for+today+joanna+watters+

A Solar Eclipse
The abdication of Edward VIII in relation to the horoscope of his brother, George VI, who had kingship thrust upon him.
• Edward VIII officially abdicated on 10 December 1936
• A Solar Eclipse fell at 21.49 Sagittarius just three days later, on 13 December 1936
• His brother George VI was born on the 14th December, with his natal Sun at 21.55 Sagittarius, almost exactly conjunct the eclipse degree

The astrological symbolism of this eclipse is highly radical – that is, it paints a powerfully accurate picture of the event in question. Not only is George VI’s Sun conjunct the eclipse degree, his Sun in his natal chart is conjunct the third cusp – the house of siblings. Furthermore, his Sun in Sagittarius rules his Leo Midheaven (status) and is in mutual reception with Jupiter in Leo, which is conjunct his Midheaven – in itself a fitting symbolic picture for a man who is to be a monarch. The eclipse falling conjunct his Sun on the 3rd house cusp sensitizes the natal configuration. His brother is eclipsed, and in fact spent the rest of his life in the shadows of exile, the mutual reception between the Sun and Jupiter is made, and George is crowned in Edward’s place. Note also that, at the time of the abdication, Pluto was in the middle of a long transit over Edward’s Mercury – a final, uncompromising and irrevocable decision.

14 September 2015 – Jupiter and Neptune’s Big issues, Mercury’s messages of caution & deliberation, Saturn’s new cycle

Firstly a huge thank you to my lovely, lovely students who’ve just been over to do the Synastry course. Ali, Chris, Elizabeth, Emma, Hilary, Julie, Linda, Lynne, Rasha and Suzan – you all worked so hard and we finished the week on a real high with some amazing astrology emerging from everyone’s individual charts. We also had a lot of fun, such different personalities yet everyone gelled, delicious taverna dinners and some great conversations, it’s what Summer School is all about – it’s going to feel very quiet this week without you all!
If Greece is too far for you to come, and if the astrology of relationships is of interest to you, then the weekend of Halloween might be a date for your diary – all details below.

• How can astrology tell you when an attraction is mutual and beneficial, and whether or not you are compatible?
• What is a “cosmic marriage” and how do you know if you’re with a true soul mate?
• Why can you live easily with one person but not another?
• How to compare the all important Moon signs in terms of emotional natures and needs
• How to use astrology to answer all types of love questions, including how to handle conflict

We’ll also look at timing measures of transits and New/Full Moons to predict dates for meetings, marriages and significant milestones within a relationship.

You’ll be working on your own horoscope on both days so please have your data to hand when booking – your date, place and time of birth. Your own chart will be drawn up by me in advance but you can also bring along one other horoscope of your choice, either a partner or a key person in your life, if you wish.

What’s happening this week? The Astrology Blog 14 September
All times posted in BST
Well no sooner have we kissed goodbye to Venus in retrograde motion than it’s Mercury’s turn. At least we won’t have to contend with retrograde Venus for another year and a half, but Mercury’s backward journeys are more frequent – three times a year for three weeks at a time. He is currently “stationing” – slowing down in readiness to mark the change of direction –
Thursday Mercury Stationary Retrograde at 16 degrees of Libra (19.10)
Mercury will turn direct again on 9 October at 1 degree of Libra, so if you have natal planets or angles in the first 16 degrees of this sign, or the opposite sign of Aries, then this will be an especially sensitive time for you. Here’s the usual link to check your horoscope:
http://www.alwaysastrology.com/birth-chart-calculator.html

For all of us though retrograde planets carry a universal message, and now’s the time to bear in mind the text book interpretation of “problems with communication and transport” and all related matters. We live in a world in which we often need to be in two places at the same time, in which communication is relentless and response time is virtually immediate. Retrograde Mercury periods are however often characterized by waiting on others, or dealing with issues to which we can’t expect immediate answers. As I said last week the themes of retrograde Mercury are likely to be more pronounced than ever given that this meandering journey is happening in the air sign of Libra, sign of The Scales, known for fairness and cooperation but also for deliberating and procrastination.

However, taking a long time to make up your mind about something may be exactly what’s needed. At the very least rushed decisions are definitely out, discussion and information gathering is in. Don’t allow yourself to be badgered into doing anything that you feel instinctively or logically to be wrong for you. Here’s the usual checklist for the “backdrop” of the coming three weeks:

Mercury’s change of direction coincides with two huge astrological events –

Thursday Jupiter opposite Neptune (07.57)

This aspect happens approximately every 13 years – the last one being September 2002 when Jupiter was in Leo opposing Neptune in Aquarius. Since then slow moving Neptune has changed sign, so this opposition happens at 8 degrees of Virgo/Pisces respectively.
This seems an apposite moment to address an issue that always comes up during a course, and often in consultations too if the astrologer makes the mistake of using too much jargon. The natural question in response to any kind of astrological statement is, “What does that mean?” The answer to that question lies at the heart of understanding how symbolism and divination actually work. If we change the question to, “What MIGHT that mean?” we shift our perspective in a way that then leaves us open to possibilities rather than becoming fixated on “boxing” symbolism and insisting that it must means something specific in advance. Those who do the Tarot know this. All the 78 cards have traditional meanings (manifest meaning) but it’s the reader’s “take” on a card when seen in a specific spread and within the context of a question that brings it to life (latent meaning).

Astrological symbolism works in exactly the same way. So this major opposition (challenging, at full stretch) between Jupiter (planet of expansion, ruling faith, justice, all things foreign, beneficence and good fortune) and Neptune (planet of spirituality, encompassing the imagination, dreams, illusion, escapism, suffering, compassion and idealism) has huge implications for all of us. Robert Hand calls it the aspect of conflict between “the real and the ideal”. At a universal level this aspect strikes at the heart of humanity itself and poignantly captures the migrant crisis in Europe, as thousands of frightened souls are washed up on the shores of new countries in the search for safe harbors. Note also that these big aspects are active for weeks as they are “applying” (building up to their point of exactitude) and then also take several weeks to draw apart and separate.

In tandem with Mercury turning retrograde the advice of “keep it real” is probably the best, even though that may not be completely possible. Also bear in mind that this is a highly seductive picture if someone is trying to win you around to their way of thinking – don’t be coerced or conned! It’s also sob stories – listen out for the hallmark of “poor me” and wise up to where you’re being influenced or persuaded to act against your better judgment. Psychologically this aspect paints the archetype of the Rescuer, which is fine if a loved one is genuinely in need, but when our resources of love, time or money are in danger of being plundered we have to try and put in some boundaries.

The final big event of the week is a major planet changing sign –
Friday Saturn ingress Sagittarius (03.48)

Saturn first entered Sagittarius on 23 December last year but only got as far as 5 degrees before turning retrograde on 14 March. He then slid back into Scorpio on 15 June and turned direct again on 2 August. This time he enters Sagittarius for real and will be travelling through this sign until the end of 2017. So I’ll be talking a lot more about this combination in the future but for now note that Saturn is entering Jupiter’s sign, and this new cycle is part and parcel of the unfolding of world events that affect us all.
Until next week,
With love from Greece

The two days are completely different but are designed to complement one another, so you can choose to do either day, or both. I’ll be joining forces with Ingrid Hoffman – astrologer and Imago Practitioner, founder of Trueheartwork, for this magical weekend. You can read more about Ingrid, and her beautifully crafted and insightful blogs, on:

http://blog.trueheartwork.com/
Ingrid will be leading the therapeutic Saturday workshop, designed to explore Venus and Mars through the signs, and to show you how to:
• Understand the wondrous duality of male and female, within yourself and in your relationships
• Revisit and connect with the powerful attractive energy of Venus in your psyche Step into the assertive Mars energy that is being sapped by stress or financial worry
• Bring attraction and assertion into balance so you can begin to manifest the love you desire
• Learn new ways of connecting and communicating with you partner or partner-to-be

I will be leading the Sunday workshop, in which I’ll be teaching how traditional horoscopy lies at the heart of assessing and understanding the synastry between two individuals:
• What kind of partner do you attract and why?
• How can astrology tell you when an attraction is mutual and beneficial, and whether or not you are compatible?
• What is a “cosmic marriage” and how do you know if you’re with a true soul mate?
• Why can you live easily with one person but not another?
• How to compare the all important Moon signs in terms of emotional natures and needs
• How to use astrology to answer all types of love questions, including how to handle conflict

• How to use the timing measures of transits and New/Full Moons to predict dates for meetings, marriages and significant milestones within a relationship
You’ll be working on your own horoscope on both days so please have your data to hand when booking – your date, place and time of birth. Your own chart will be drawn up by me in advance and you can also bring along one other horoscope of your choice, either a partner or a key person in your life, if you wish.

7 September 2015 – Venus on the move, Mercury’s rethink and a Solar Eclipse

The Astrology Blog 7 September
All times posted in BST

I seem to have been talking about retrograde Venus forever, so it’s uplifting to start this week’s blog with the reminder that this beautiful planet has just turned direct again. As I posted last week –
Sunday 6 September Venus Stationary Direct at 15 degrees of Leo (09.30)

Note firstly that Venus is “stuck” at 15 degrees of Leo as she switches from retrograde motion back to direct motion. Think of this as a plane coming in to land – it can’t just drop out of the sky, it has to slow down to make its descent and then take off again. So Venus is now at her slowest but will start picking up speed again after the weekend. If you have planets at or close to 15 degrees of Leo – or the opposite sign of Aquarius – this event will be especially significant for you but at a universal level the love, pleasure and money planet getting back to business is Good News for everyone.
Here’s the usual link for checking the sign and position of your natal planets which, btw, is the most clicked on link every week which is why I now always make a point of including it:
http://www.alwaysastrology.com/birth-chart-calculator.html

If you see the initials SD next to any planet in a horoscope this stands for Stationary Direct (SR stands for Stationary Retrograde) and a planet’s “stations” are considered to be especially important. A personal planet (ie excluding Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) would be considered to be stationing for a period of about a week, ie two to three days either side of the exact date marking the change of direction. As above, so below, these days capture the turning points in our lives.

Venus’ station has been especially poignant for my family, and Sue has given the thumbs up to sharing the story. As some of you know Sue is my twin sister, but what you probably don’t know is that we were born over four hours apart (poor mother, esp as she didn’t know she was having twins in the first place…). This means that we have different rising signs and that our Moons are two degrees apart. With Venus stationing exactly on Sue’s Moon of 15 degrees of luxurious and generous Leo we’ve had an amazing showing of giving her daughter, my niece, the holiday of a lifetime here in Greece. Nobody deserves some special time out more. She has her own four year old twins, one with special needs, and she’s doing a stupendous job single handedly. The astrology is reflected in the twins’ chart too – born within one minute of each other by C-section – as they were born on a Sun – Venus conjunction in Leo, only 8’ of arc apart. Any planet conjunct the Sun to within 17’ of arc (ie just over a quarter of a degree) is said to cazimi – rendered super powerful by being “in the heart of the Sun”. In every horoscope we can locate not just “what’s what” but also “who’s who” and in the twins’ horoscope Venus is the significator for their mother. So this blog is for you Victoria!

The “who’s who” part of astrological craft is the theme for this week’s course here in Greece, which is called Synastry – the Astrology of Relationships. As I write this blog my ten students are winging their way to Nidri, all flights on time, and I can’t wait for the reunion of my dream team who, all bar one, have been here several times before.

As Venus gets underway on her new journey here’s the checklist again for the kind of things you can expect to experience when Venus turns direct – an event that happens only once every 19 months –

• Love issues of all kinds get resolved, or start moving in the right direction
• Broken romance can be mended if your heart is in it as much as the other person’s (Leo rules the heart)
• A parting of the ways for relationships that are beyond repair – it’s quitting time for any unhealthy or destructive liaison
• Finding reserves of courage you didn’t know you had
• Learning that happiness and good self esteem work hand in hand
• Renewed confidence and a stronger sense of self, rather than being symbiotic, is a shot in the arm for healthy love
• A special someone comes into your life, especially a lover, a new girlfriend, a capable woman or someone who can help your child
• Good news, your own or for a woman you care about
• We get back to doing what gives us pleasure
• We get back together with those we love and enjoy – reunions!
• We find answers to heath and well being issues
• Major money decisions or investments get the green light
• Creative projects or special events of all kinds also get a big tick
• New jobs, especially those connected to a genuine passion, reveal or enhance our vocational talents and aspirations

What else is happening this week?

Mars is also travelling through the fire sign of Leo –

Tuesday Mars trine Uranus (20.54)

This aspect happens with Mars at 19 degrees of Leo and Uranus at 19 degrees of Aries. As Mars is the other “love planet” (Venus and Mars were conjunct each other last week) this continues the theme of love issues untangling themselves and moving on. Mars loves speed and Uranus loves immediacy, especially being in Aries the first sign of the zodiac, as well as being the planet of surprises and revolution. Uranus also groups – social or educational – and favors joining forces with likeminded people or doing “something different”.
Mars spearheads campaigns and Uranus is also the collective, so it would be an omission not to mention the tragedy of the now iconic little Alan Kurdi. If ever a single death made so much impact, it is his. The desperate plight of thousands of migrants fleeing their devastated countries has now come home in a new way to everyone in Europe and around the world, as the message rings out loud and clear that this is not a matter of people trying to seek a better life but about running for their lives. We have only to imagine our own home and town in ruins around us to get some inkling of what that must be like. Uranus rules all organizations connected to society at large and human rights, such as Amnesty International, and here’s the link if you want to read more or make a donation –
https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2015/08/time-for-europe-to-end-the-refugee-shame/

Mars is god of war, and therefore the planet of action. He favors doing things. However the other key player moving into the picture in a big way is Mercury, the mind planet, and it has to be said that he’s now signaling what can only be described as some kind of logistical nightmare as he squares up to Pluto, planet of loss, endings and death/rebirth –

Wednesday Mercury square Pluto (20.24)

This is an important aspect because it will repeat twice more over the next couple of months, on 24 September and 22 October, all with Mercury at 13 degrees of Libra and Pluto at 13 degrees of Capricorn. This is because Mercury is getting ready to turn retrograde next week, Thursday 17th, and will therefore be going backwards and forwards until the second week of October. As I said last week, Mercury at full speed can whizz through one sign in two weeks, but when he’s in slow mode the journey can elongate to two months. Given that retrograde Mercury is all communication/thought/mind issues working in reverse or meandering form, and that the sign of Libra is known for fairness and cooperation but also for deliberating and procrastination, it would seem as if making any kind of plan or decision will be one enormous tall order.

So, start by being aware that nothing is set in stone and that changes of mind, or the conflicting wishes of others involved in your plans and projects, are very real possibilities. It could be hugely beneficial to start practicing a lot more open mindedness, openness to change and receptivity to different ways of doing things. How we do, or don’t, communicate is also likely to be under scrutiny in one way or another. Pay close attention too to the Librans in your life. Decision making for them could go from painful to agonizing! But for all of us this Mercury in Libra backdrop will be bringing all sorts of twists and turns – patience and cooperation will be paramount as we work our way carefully towards definite decisions and resolutions.

Back to this week’s challenging aspect to Pluto, pay close attention to unfolding events midweek for clues as to how this particular cycle will be playing out for you. Note anything that smacks of retrograde Mercury (eg things unraveling, matters taking a turn or others taking up a position that you couldn’t have anticipated) and prepare for getting “back to the drawing board”. Pluto loves to wipe the slate clean, or even strip us right back to absolute basics, sometimes to the point of despair. When you find yourself asking where do I go from here, you can pretty much bet that Pluto is chucking his weight around, so many matters will need plan B, careful handling and the negotiating skills of a top diplomat. Again, look to the Librans in your life, this time for lessons – they’re naturals at handling difficult stuff with non confrontational language and a charming smile. They’d rather crawl over broken glass than give offence.

The out with the old and in with the new theme is underlined this coming weekend as the New Moon is also a Solar Eclipse –

Sunday New Moon/Solar Eclipse at 20 degrees of Virgo (07.42)

As I’ve commented before, some astrologers refer to eclipses as power points, others as omens of disempowerment. Either way, they tend to play a role in revealing new pictures. A shadow is thrown but lifts again and some changes may be linked to bringing things out of hiding. Triangular setups, such as affairs or being in competition in business, are also highly sensitized yet again as eclipses are about the intricate relationship between the three bodies of the Sun, Moon and Earth. Someone is inevitably overshadowed while another emerges in a new light. New relationships starting at this time may be characterized by the complications of one or both extricating themselves from previous ties. Eclipses hunt in pairs, so we’ll have the Lunar Eclipse in two weeks time, so in spite of Venus having turned direct there is still a lot of sensitive ground to cover throughout the rest of this month.
Until next week,
With love from Greece
