24 August 2015 – Retrograde Venus and Ashley Madison, Mercury in decisive mode and a Jupiterian Full Moon

The Greek Island Summer School

23 May 2016
Combining Astrology & Tarot
Suitable for all levels

I’m very excited to announce that medium and tarot expert Avril Price will be our visiting tutor for the first course at the Summer School next year. Avril is mostly based at The College of Psychic Studies in South Kensington but also travels extensively. We’ve had a couple of meet ups in London during the last year and found that we’re definitely singing from the same hymn sheet in our approach to divination and psychology. Avril is warm, friendly and down to earth, passionate about her subject and extremely knowledgeable. Her mentoring is designed to teach you how to be a better tarot reader and also how to develop your psychic skills. You can find out more about Avril’s work on her fabulous new website:
http://www.avrilprice.com/
I’ll be teaching how to add the string of astrology to your bow for extra depth in your readings, in a way that is easy and effective to do, and doesn’t involved drawing up the whole horoscope in advance.
Final numbers to be decided but we’re taking bookings now so do get in touch if you’d like to put your name on the list.

The Astrology Blog 24 August
All times posted in BST
Overall this week’s themes are positive and potentially highly productive but, as I’ve been saying for the last few weeks, don’t forget that we have a backdrop of Venus currently in retrograde motion, and still with another two weeks to go.
Venus turns retrograde approximately every 19 months (October 2010, May 2012 and December 2013 were the most recent retrograde dates) for approximately 6 weeks at a time. She also repeats her retrograde patterns every 8 years – so in July 2007 Venus turned retrograde in early Virgo, returned to Leo and spent most of the retrograde period in this sign. This current retrograde period will end on 6 September. So before looking at the main astrological features of the week ahead here’s a checklist reminder, first posted a couple of weeks ago, of what to expect or how to honour while the love planet is in reverse:
• In a difficult or failing relationship? The fault lines are likely to be under extra stress and strain
• Try not to pretend that things are ok when they’re clearly not
• Deal with the key issues before the cracks widen past the point of repair
• This applies to all loved ones, not just partners
• Love difficulties – relationship not necessarily lost, but under review
• Single? Avoid the any relationship is better than no relationship trap – it’s worth holding out for the real deal
• New romance likely to start with hesitation or secrecy on one or both sides
• Any issue linked to affairs will be highly sensitized
• Unfolding events and experiences throughout the six week period of Venus’ retrograde journey are crucial to the outcome with regard to relationship decisions of all kinds
• No matter how sure you may be about a new attraction, try not to rush – there is a lot that you don’t know about this person, and vice versa
• Venus also rules money – watch the power balance around money in key relationships
• If there’s a major purchase or investment on the cards it’s a time for very thorough research, not impulsive buying that you may live to regret
• Be extra vigilant in all your financial dealings
• Balance the books – retrograde is great for “re” words such as repayment if money is owed or owing
• Venus also rules beauty – any major work not advised, such as plastic surgery
• Get “back” in touch with those who’ve been on your mind, especially women, and make sure they’re ok
• If you can help, financially or emotionally, just do it!

The most obvious retrograde Venus story in the news at the moment is the hacking of website Ashley Madison, which is all about encouraging people to have affairs. With a slogan of Life is Short – Have an Affair this company has built up a membership of a staggering 37 million people around the world, and continues to sign up new members at the rate of 35,000 a day. In keeping with classic retrograde symbolism the identity of the hackers remains unknown, other than that they call themselves the Impact Team and seem to have been formed purely to target this particular website.

Noel Biderman, the CEO of the company, is born 1 January 1971. Unfortunately there is no other birth data but you don’t really need to look any further than the date as he’s born on a triple conjunction of Venus and Mars (the love and sex planets) and Jupiter (expansion) all in Scorpio (the sign of sex, secrecy and all that is taboo). This is text book symbolism for a man who’s made his fortune through the infidelity of others. In my book Be Your Own Astrologer I give “takes” on the planets through the signs, and here’s the interpretation of Jupiter in Scorpio:
Jupiter expands whatever he touches. With Scorpio that means feelings, the good and the bad. There are no indifferent ones. These Jupiter people live life intensely and tend to take huge risks, emotionally or in pursuit of a goal. They can be immensely successful when they follow their passion. Sir Cameron Mackintosh knew he wanted to be a theater producer when he was 8 years old and emotional spectacles of power, sex and death such as Les Misérables are Jupiter in Scorpio personified.

So, back to the 37 million … As an astrologer it’s not my job or my place to sit in judgment. It’s my job to capture the “as above, so below” astrological symbolism, whether it relates to world events or an individual’s horoscope – or both. The next layer is to unravel the message. It’s worth remembering that this guy didn’t invent infidelity – it’s as old as the hills – but why are so many millions of people so dissatisfied with their sex lives that they would resort to this kind of subterfuge? Apparently the women members in particular have mostly cited the need for passion/feeling special in their lives – as captured in one of the website advertisements which showed a couple in the throes of passion, commenting that they are married – but not to each other. I’m venturing into territory here that could keep me going for another few thousand words so I’ll just wrap this up with the obvious – if you want to give your relationship a shot in the arm then check your passion levels! Psychotherapy teaches us that top of the list for a stagnating sex life is unresolved resentment, but laziness/lack of imagination are in the mix too. Venus (love and sex) in the fire sign of Leo (adoration, passion, confidence, vital sense of self) retrograde (withholding) – the astrological writing is on the wall.

What else is happening this week?
Mercury is a key player this week, finishing his journey through his own sign of Virgo and making a harmonious aspect to Saturn. This is the last aspect for both planets before they change sign, Mercury moving into Libra this week and Saturn moving on into Sagittarius in the middle of next month.
Wednesday Mercury sextile Saturn (17.09)
Thursday Mercury ingress Libra (16.46)
Note that Mercury will start to slow down once he enters Libra as he’ll turn retrograde in this sign mid September and will be going backwards and forwards through Libra until 2 November. I’ll be talking more about this in the coming weeks but for now this aspect to Saturn takes place at the end of their currents signs (28 degrees of Virgo and 28 degrees of Scorpio respectively) and therefore has all the hallmarks of finales, conclusions, important agreements or major/irreversible decisions. Any matter that has been dragging on can now be sorted so seize any opportunity to wrap up outstanding issues or tie up loose ends in either your personal or working life. Positive Mercury – Saturn aspects are generally great for list ticking, finding the answers and signing on dotted lines. Think closure.
Here’s the usual link for checking the sign and position of your natal planets:
http://www.alwaysastrology.com/birth-chart-calculator.html
When you enter your data – date, place and time of birth – you’ll then be able to pull up a visual of your horoscope. You don’t have to understand this in its entirety – just note if you have any planets at or close to any degree and sign that is currently significant. You can do this by hovering your mouse over each planet, and the information will show in the box at the top.
Midweek also brings a fabulous major aspect that happens only once a year, as the Sun takes a year to travel through all the 12 signs, whereas Jupiter takes 12 years –
Wednesday Sun conjunct Jupiter (23.08)
This conjunction falls at 3 degrees of Virgo (the last one was 24 July 2015 at 1 degree of Leo, the next one will be 26 September 2016 at 3 degrees of Libra) so if you have planets or angles on or close to this degree, or in the opposite sign of Pisces, then this is definitely a day for your diary! Jupiter is the planet of expansion as noted earlier and therefore tends to signal the things that make our world a bigger and better place. He rules luck, opportunity, education, travel, optimism and generosity. Take special note of the people you meet at this time or of those who go out of their way to help you with their time, love, money or expertise. People who come into our life under Jupiter’s auspices are good for us, they can teach us things or make things happen in a way that would otherwise have been a struggle or even impossible.
This major conjunction falls just three days before the Full Moon – in other words the Full Moon itself falls opposite Jupiter. Also the Full Moon is in Pisces, one of Jupiter’s signs –
Saturday Full Moon at 6 degrees of Pisces (19.36)
If you have planets between 3 to 6 degrees of Pisces – or in the opposite sign of Virgo or the other mutable signs of Sagittarius and Gemini – then this Full Moon will be some kind of milestone or highlight. Anything connected to Jupiter’s themes – the main ones being listed above – is likely to gather speed. Social events also tend to feature strongly under Jupiter aspects but these come with a word of warning! Pisces rules booze along with sensitivity so tears can all too easily flow along with the wine! Watch out for the Jupiter/Pisces theme of inflation – things getting blown up out of proportion – and remember that Full Moons are not associated with lunacy (lunar) for nothing. As I’ve commented many times before those who work in security related professions or in A&E departments know to get ready for the domestics and expect extra work at the times of the Full Moon. Otherwise though this line up is fun and if you need to let your hair down – now’s your chance!
Have fun, stay safe,
With love from Greece
Joanna

The Astrology Blog – 17 August 2015
All times posted in BST
We’re halfway through the 6 weeks of Venus’ retrograde journey – here’s the sequence –
• Ingress (entered) Virgo on 18 July
• Turned retrograde a week later on 25 July, at 0 degrees and 46 minutes of Virgo
• Re-entered Leo 31 July
• So the retrograde journey is from 0 degrees of Virgo back to the middle of Leo
• Will turn direct at 14 degrees of Leo on 6 September

If any one of these degrees are relevant to your own horoscope then this time scale will be of especial significance, notably in connection to Venus’ main themes of love, money women and children. Here’s the usual link for checking the sign and position of your natal planets:

http://www.alwaysastrology.com/birth-chart-calculator.html

One of the retrograde Venus stories that grabbed my attention this week was about women’s health. The astrological “as above, so below” rings out loud and clear as Venus rules women and love – including self love and how we value ourselves – and the news story about literally thousands and thousands of women skipping their smear tests was alarming. I recently lost a very dear friend from cervical cancer but, in reality, she died of avoidance, which is one “take” on the meaning of retrograde, and also ignorance – ie she hadn’t understood the implications of her symptoms. She was only in her young forties.

The reasons for this avoidance are totally understandable – embarrassment, fear of pain and the “it won’t happen to me” syndrome – so if this applies to you or anyone close to you now’s the time to make that appointment. Exchange those few moments of discomfort for peace of mind and the gift of life! And if you can’t summon up the courage alone then go in a group…. this week’s astrology is perfect for gathering your female friends around you, the more the merrier!
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3196849/Four-women-explain-REAL-reasons-skipping-smear-tests.html

There are only two major aspects being formed this week and Venus is the lead player –

Wednesday Venus 20 degrees Leo trine Uranus 20 degrees Aries (17.45)

Note that as Venus is retrograde she’s travelling back to repeat these aspects to the slow moving outer planets – the first Venus trine Uranus was the end of June and the third and final one will be 23 September. So if these degrees are relevant to your own horoscope look out for a longer sequence of events that fit the symbolism and time frame.

Obviously I relate the world and my own life to astrology all the time but that doesn’t mean I check the Ephemerides (astrological tables) every time I go out of the front door! However, sometimes “elective” astrology – which means choosing a date for an occasion – is useful and so I’ve organized a girl’s night with a small group of my closest friends. Retrogrades are good for getting “back” in touch, the astrology is perfect for a lively night out and because of it I changed the suggested evening from the Tuesday to the Wednesday – Venus (women) trine (harmonious) Uranus (groups) in fire signs (energetic, warming). The retrograde may however also show as not everyone being able to make it.

There is a line of thought in astrological practice also that says that if a current aspect reflects your own horoscope – ie if you have the same aspect natally – then it will be especially significant for you, and I have Venus trine Uranus in fire signs in my own horoscope. So it may be that daytime events on Wednesday will also bring news for me that is pleasure or group related – such as hearing from those who want to do the London workshops in the autumn, or those who’ve been waiting for flight prices to come down to fly over for Summer School next month will find the bargains!

At a universal level though, whether you have this aspect natally or not, anything connected to group events or your social life gets a big tick midweek, so say yes to invitations or send out your own, or join a group if there’s something you want to learn more about or if you need support. Also listen out for surprises, especially in connection to your love life or your girlfriends – Uranus often signals the unexpected or the things that raise everyone’s eyebrows. It’s also surprising how often aspects to the outer planets can bring news of the people of the Sun sign to which they relate – Uranus for the Aquarians in your life, Neptune for the Pisceans and Pluto for the Scorpios.

The Venus – Uranus is the applying (in the making) aspect throughout the first half of the week so you don’t have to wait until Wednesday to get sociable or proactive. Teamwork is hugely favoured, so pick other people’s brains shamelessly and let them pick yours. Uranus loves lists too so if you’ve got a lot to do then get systematic – seeing where to prioritize and where to delegate are two skills that could save you a lot of time and stress.
Talking of time and stress… the second aspect of the week is the perfect recipe for just that!

Saturday Sun square Saturn (00.41)

This signals that the second half of the week will be slower and, if you have a particular problem, this is when it will grow arms and legs – all the more reason to get list ticking in the first half of the week.

The Sun is the life giver, Saturn by tough aspect delays or denies. He is Lord of Time itself and he is also the enemy of the Lights (the Sun and the Moon) as he is weak in the signs that they rule – ie Sun rules Leo and the Moon rules Cancer, and these are Saturn’s sign of “detriment”. Unsurprisingly then, the Sun squaring up to Saturn can indicate a milestone in any situation related to health, or it will throw up roadblocks between you and a specific desire. All you can do is to bear in mind that a roadblock is there for a reason, maybe to protect you from an ill advised move or even danger. So avoid trying to force round pegs into square holes.

Also be prepared to admit defeat with regard to any plan that is simply not working out, no matter how hard you may tried to make it do so. The writing will be on the wall for anything that is A Bad Idea or for any relationship that smacks of “ne’er the twain shall meet”. Endings of some kind are likely to be a noticeable theme as this is Saturn’s penultimate aspect before he changes sign (which happens only once every two and a half years) in the middle of next month.

This is also the Sun’s last aspect before a change of sign, which is the last event of this week –

Sunday Sun ingress Virgo (11.38)

Here in the northern hemisphere the Sun’s exit from Leo (fire) and ingress into Virgo (earth) often signals the change of season from summer to autumn. Here in Greece, and in many other parts of Europe, we’ve had a very hot summer and we’ll be welcoming cooler climes – ie temperatures staying under 35 degrees, bring it on! The shift from Leo to Virgo is also great for adopting a new approach, notably from big/dramatic/lavish to realistic/workable/efficient.
To give you a flavor of the Virgo archetype here’s an excerpt from the Sun signs chapter 1 of my book Be Your Own Astrologer

Virgo is Mercury’s feminine sign which is expressed through brain power of a more subtle and exacting kind. Virgo’s primary task is to evaluate and analyze. Information, feelings and decisions are all fed through some kind of mental sieve, separating fact from fiction and isolating essential details. If they ask you a question, which they generally love to do, they’ll pick apart your answer to find out exactly and precisely what you mean.
This sign is not given to extravagance or lavishness. Virgo is economical with all resources and can be frugal to the point of extreme self denial. They can be fanatically tidy and fussy, with a place for everything and everything in its place. However, the goody two shoes image is frequently a cover for inner turmoil and a wonderfully whacky streak which most certainly does not tally with the somewhat dry and boring image often ascribed to this sign.

Finally I’m indebted to Venusian Kim Bennett of Serenity Retreat (http://www.serenityretreat.co.uk/ ) here on Lefkada for posting the following over the weekend on Facebook. For me it’s the perfect mantra for the gentle Virgo energy and for honoring Venus in retrograde motion. As she points out this is originally from AA, but you don’t have to be a recovering alcoholic to see the beauty and wisdom in this mantra. We’re all addicted to something – whether it’s substances of drink, caffeine, nicotine, or ways of living/operating – such as stress, worry, martyrdom, work, the computer, being “good”, the list is endless…. It’s the sort of thing to print out and stick on your fridge door as I imagine that trying to observe this even for just one day is quite a challenge, the first demand or distraction of each day would be enough to send it flying out of our heads, but it’s well worth coming back to as many times as possible.

JUST FOR TODAY
Just for today I will try to live through this day only, and not tackle my whole life problem all at once. I can do something for 12 hours that would appall me if I felt I had to keep it up for a lifetime.
JUST FOR TODAY
Just for today I will be happy. Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.
JUST FOR TODAY
I will adjust myself to what is, and not try to adjust everything to my own desires. I will take my luck as it comes, and fit myself to it.
JUST FOR TODAY
I will strengthen my mind.
I will learn something useful.
I will not be a mental loafer.
I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.
JUST FOR TODAY
I will exercise my soul in three ways, I will do someone a good turn, and NOT get found out. If anybody knows of it, it will not count. I will do at least two things I don’t want to do just for exercise. I will not show anyone my feelings are hurt, they may be hurt, but today I will not show it.
JUST FOR TODAY
I will be agreeable, I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticise not one bit, not find fault with anything, and not try to improve or regulate anybody except myself.
JUST FOR TODAY
I will have a program. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from two pests, hurry and indecision.
JUST FOR TODAY
I will have a quiet half hour all by myself and relax. During this half hour sometime, I will try and get a better perspective of my life.
JUST FOR TODAY
I will be unafraid. Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful, and to believe that as I give to the world, so the world will give to me.

Wishing you many successful “todays”,
With love from Greece

10 August 2015 – Your retrograde Venus checklist, Donald Trump and Mars, and New Moon enlightenment of the intriguing kind

The Astrology Blog – 10 August 2015
The Greek Island Summer School 2015

A quick reminder that there’s only course left to run this year in Greece, which is Synastry – The Astrology of Relationships starting 7 September. It’s of little surprise that the Synastry week is almost fully booked. In my astrological practice over the last 30 years there has hardly been a consultation in which love was not mentioned, and more often than not it’s at the top of the list. Understanding Synastry – astrological compatibility or incompatibility – could save us a great deal of trouble and heartache! As the love planet Venus continues on her retrograde journey through Leo I find myself, again unsurprisingly, surrounded by love stories of the complicated kind.
I’ve been asked for a checklist – as I do for the times for when Mercury is retrograde – so here it is!
• In a difficult or failing relationship? The fault lines are likely to be under extra stress and strain
• Deal with the key issues before the cracks widen past the point of repair
• This applies to all loved ones, not just partners
• Love difficulties – relationship not necessarily lost, but under review
• New romance likely to start with hesitation or secrecy on one or both sides
• Any issue linked to affairs will be highly sensitized
• Unfolding events and experiences throughout the six week period of Venus’ retrograde journey are crucial to the outcome with regard to relationship decisions of all kinds
• No matter how sure you may be about a new attraction, try not to rush – there is a lot that you don’t know about this person, and vice versa
• Venus also rules money – watch the power balance around money in key relationships
• If there’s a major purchase or investment on the cards it’s a time for very thorough research, not impulsive buying

Venus rules women and, in the news, the top retrograde Venus story has to go to Donald Trump, who is running for president in next year’s US elections, and his clash with journalist Megyn Kelly:
Mr Trump was one of 10 Republican presidential candidates in a TV debate co-hosted by Ms Kelly on Thursday, which was watched by a record 24 million people. Early on in the debate, Ms Kelly asked him why voters should elect a man who has called women “fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals”.

Um, good question? Unfortunately his reaction, referring to blood with the implication that her anger was related to her menstrual cycle, served only to confirm the concern of a deeply entrenched contempt for women. In Trump’s horoscope the astrological signature for misogyny is Venus conjunct Saturn. In the world of psychotherapy contempt is recognized as emotional violence. The media now is suggesting that this, along with his dismissive statement that he hadn’t got time for political correctness, might just be the thing that dislodges him from the top of the opinion polls, pointing out that essential presidential qualities include diplomacy.
However, he may yet brazen his way through with pure force of personality. With an exact birth time of 10.54am Donald Trump has Mars at 27 Leo conjunct an Ascendant of 29.58 Leo, so all the recent activity at 29 degrees of Leo – the fixed star of Regulus, also known as the Heart of the Lion, denoting ambition, success, status and leadership – has been highly relevant to his presidential campaign. The big (Jupiter) debate (Mercury) was on the Mercury/Jupiter conjunction on Regulus at the end of last week and the controversy has certainly jet propelled (Mars) him onto front pages everywhere.

Last week I talked about the theme of transitions as both Mercury and Mars changed sign. In my book Be Your Own Astrologer you’ll find “takes” on all the planets through the signs, and last week I quoted from it for Mercury arriving in Virgo. Mars moved into Leo in the early hours of yesterday (Sunday) and here’s the snapshot for this fiery and bossy combination, which is textbook astrology when seen in the context of being Trump’s Mars conjunct his Ascendant (public persona, approach and physical appearance):
Mars in the Sun’s sign is a royal, commanding, creative and powerful combination. These individuals have forceful personalities and their talents are usually expressed in a centre stage way. Their self belief is wholehearted but they secretly need others to believe in them too. They are highly motivated by praise, recognition and adulation. The Mars drive coupled with the Leo knack for drawing a crowd creates a showmanship quality, charismatic performers and “the show must go on” work ethic. In business this is the archetype of the Managing Director, the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) and the entrepreneur, such as Donald Trump.
This placing often bestows an excellent physique. Amongst the women we find statuesque types such as Charlene Princess of Monaco, and supermodels Yasmin Le Bon and “The Body” Elle McPherson. Amongst the men think Harrison Ford as Han Solo in Star Wars or as the intrepid Indiana Jones, and “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen whose best-known albums “epitomize his penchant for finding grandeur in the struggles of daily life.” (Wikipedia)
The themes of transition continue as Mercury and Mars get underway on their new journeys, and also it’s now Jupiter’s turn, which is even more significant as “The Greater Benefic” changes sign only once every 12 months –
Tuesday Jupiter ingress Virgo (12.12)
In traditional astrology this is Jupiter’s sign of “fall” – the sign in which Jupiter’s expansive qualities struggle for expression. In my book I sum up this placing as:
Positives: meticulous, discriminating and efficient
Negatives: joylessness, servitude or too many personal sacrifices
For Jupiter types this change of sign is especially important. For me (Sag) Jupiter in Virgo will be travelling through my 9th/10th houses and signals the end of holiday time, and hopefully the overwhelming heat too, and getting back to work, preparing for the course here in Greece in four weeks time and more workshops in the UK at the end of October. There’s often a health link too with Virgo, so Jupiter in this sign is about toning down the high life and looking after ourselves, but also keeping work hours realistic. There was an article yesterday in the news about a new government health campaign aimed at those who don’t get enough sleep – ie those who habitually have less than 6 hours a night.

What else is happening this week?
The Sun is the leading light in the second half of the week –
Thursday Sun at 20 degrees of Leo trine Uranus at 20 degrees of Aries (11.28)
Friday New Moon at 21 degrees of Leo (15.55)
Saturday Sun conjunct Venus at 22 degrees of Leo (20.23)
This is a dynamic line up of planets in fire signs, with the New Moon falling in positive aspect to both Uranus and Venus. Love or money matters in particular could unfold rapidly or in a surprising way. Go back to the checklist at the beginning of the blog for the retrograde Venus key issues as this New Moon is likely to swing the spotlight onto any of these that are pertinent to you.
The last word goes to Mercury as he makes his first aspects as he starts his journey through Virgo –
Thursday Mercury opposite Neptune (02.13)
Saturday Mercury trine Pluto (20.55)
The communication planet in a challenging aspect to Neptune (deception, delusion, grief) and a positive aspect to Pluto (depth discussions, final decisions, revelations) paints a mixed picture but overall it signals a shift from denial/confusion to clarity/deeper understanding. We all, to one extent or another, often find it hard to speak up or to accept any kind of inevitability, or to accept the things we simply don’t want to believe, but these Mercury aspects seem designed to bring any such matters to a conclusion – especially as the Mercury/Pluto contact falls within half an hour of the Sun/Venus conjunction. Potentially powerful stuff!
Here’s to enlightening times, with love from Greece,

3 August 2015 – Messages from a retrograde Venus, back to the future and making major transitions

The Astrology Blog – 3 August 2015

The Greek Island Summer School 2015
Just a quick reminder that there’s only course left to run this year in Greece, which is Synastry – The Astrology of Relationships starting 7 September. This has proved to be an exceptionally popular week and there are only 2 of 12 places remaining. Let me know asap if you’d like to find out more and go to the end of this newsletter for more info about the course.

There’s an important week ahead, with especially strong themes of transition – significant milestones, endings and beginnings. In terms of the major planets the big event is happening this morning –
Monday Jupiter square Saturn (11.38)
So by the time you receive this blog the aspect will already be “separating” – past its moment of exactitude – but nevertheless these big aspects tend to make themselves felt for several days either side, which is why I first mentioned this aspect at the end of last week’s blog. To recap –
This is clash of the giants – a square between two major planets and in fixed signs – that smacks of intransigence and situations that can’t be resolved, easily or at all. Look out for a clash of values/beliefs or for a major milestone in any situation that has been very slow moving and drawn out. Saturn tends to plonk roadblocks in front of us and for reasons that are not immediately apparent. Patience is paramount, as is acceptance.
For my dear friend Lindsey the roadblocks were literal as, at the end of her week’s holiday, we got to the airport yesterday in soaring temperatures only to find that her flight (Jupiter) had been delayed (Saturn) by four hours as Easy Jet had to replace the plane at the last minute. Thank heavens for air-conned departure lounges – and of course, air safety. Sadly for others there was bad news with regard to more serious things that couldn’t be changed – my heart goes out to you, you know who you are.
Jupiter and Saturn make this square at the end of Leo and Scorpio respectively, which is part of the theme of old/new cycles. Jupiter is getting ready to change sign next week (an event that happens only once every 12 months), and Saturn will change sign in the middle of September (an event that happens only once every two and a half years). The extra thread in the weave at the moment is that this is all happening against the backdrop of a retrograde Venus, and the week starts with Venus playing into this major aspect –
Tuesday Venus conjunct Jupiter at 28 degrees of Leo (22.48)
Wednesday Venus square Saturn (16.09)
Note that as Venus is currently retrograde – appearing to travel backwards through the heavens – she’s now repeating aspects for the second time. (The first conjunction with Jupiter was at 21 degrees of Leo on 29 June, Venus will turn direct again at 14 degrees of Leo on 6 September, and the third and final conjunction with Jupiter will happen on 25 October at 15 degrees of Virgo. Venus’ first square to Saturn was on 14 July at 28 degrees of Leo/Saturn and the third and final square will be at 2 degrees of Virgo/Sagittarius on 11 October.)

What does all of this add up to?
Regular readers will know that I usually do an all-dancing and all-singing number about any Venus – Jupiter double act. Both of these planets are “benefics” – they bring the good things of life such as love, money, luck, opportunity and the expanding horizons of the future – but with Venus in retrograde motion and Saturn throwing a huge spanner in the works such themes are either working in reverse or they’ll be slow to unfold or will be marked with heavy price tags. Personal desire v responsibility is a theme that is very much in the mix, as is anything connected to personal boundaries. Generous Jupiter gives freely, optimistically and without strings, but Saturn is the voice of realism and wants to know how you are going to make something work out in the real world. If you’re in the process of going through major changes, especially in connection to your love life or to finances, then this week will be packing a big punch. Look carefully at the issues that are coming to light and, above all, try not to make decisions that are based on the wrong reasons.
What are the wrong reasons? The big one is fear – do you feel inclined to shy away from something because the changes involved are too scary? – and the other big one is guilt. My colleague Ingrid Hoffman calls this one the most toxic of emotions. Guilt can keep us trapped in the wrong relationship or stuck on the treadmill of lifestyle patterns that are fabulous for everyone else but definitely not that brilliant for us. Guilt can be a helpful emotion sometimes – it tells us if we’re doing something wrong – but more often than not it’s simply a ball and chain that we drag around with us, sometimes for years. If you don’t essentially believe that you have a right to be happy or a right to be solvent, or if you essentially believe that keeping the “peace” (a far cry from peacefulness) is better than ever asserting your own feelings or wishes, then this is the week when these issues are likely to be staring you in the face, and you need to stare right back at them. Retrograde Venus joining up with Jupiter is the time to get back to the future.
Saturn is often linked to taboos, the ultimate one being death. Why as a culture do we still struggle with so much terror around the prospect of shuffling off our mortal coil, why is death still such a stigma? A friend of mine who went through cancer a while back recently told me that so many of her other friends dropped out of her life – they simply didn’t know how to cope with it. Jung said that there is a part of the human psyche that “disregards death”, we compartmentalize it and put it in the furthest away corner of our minds, but we surely shouldn’t disregard it in others. I can’t think of anything more important than being there for someone I loved.
Saturn having just turned direct at the end of Scorpio – sign of the 8th house of death – and in conflict with retrograde Venus has already been expressed in the death of loved women and beautiful animals. The world has been saddened by the loss of Kristina Bobbi Brown at age 22, “national treasure” Cilla Black at age 72 and Cecil the Lion – the ultimate Leo tragedy, with Venus still conjunct the magnificent fixed star of Regulus at 29 degrees of Leo, known as the Heart of the Lion. All of these deaths are iconic in their own ways. In particular there’s a huge message around our responsibility to children and animals – those who absolutely depend on us for safety or who are at risk when a human turns predator. I would like to address those words to the man who assassinated the majestic Cecil and who offered the defence that he had practiced his “sport” (beggars belief) “responsibly”. At a deeper level we can only draw on the hope that the laws around big game hunting will now change forever.
So there are times when Saturn puts life and death issues high up on the list and this week is one of them. Whether it’s coping with loss, or waking up to the symbolism of where your life is “dead”, or whether you’re in the process of closing an old cycle in your life and preparing for the new, either emotionally or practically, there’s a lot to be processed as Saturn continues to be a key player right up until the end of the week –
Thursday
Mars trine Saturn (09.30)
Mercury conjunct Venus (15.26)
Mercury square Saturn (21.20)
Note that these Saturn aspects bracket the Mercury – Venus conjunction. In the midst of challenges lies the chance for a heart to heart, second chances connected to saying what needs to be said or looking again at advice or decisions, news that may change the way you’ve been looking at something, changes of heart or getting “back” (retrograde) in touch with girlfriends or anyone important to you.
The themes of transition reach a finale at the end of the week as Mercury and Jupiter unite – at 29 Leo, again the degree of Regulus – and it’s the last aspect that either planet makes before changing sign –
Friday
Mercury conjunct Jupiter at 29 degrees of Leo (08.10)
Mercury ingress Virgo (20.16)
These aspects bode well for brilliant results and good news, and for understanding and planning ahead as Mercury is “dignified” in Virgo. From my book Be Your Own Astrologer – to give you a taste of this combination!
Most people associate Mercury with Gemini, his masculine sign, but here is his lesser known strength, the feminine earth sign of diligent Virgo. The planet of the mind in the sign of discrimination makes for an awesome combination – insightful, precise and observant. These individuals put two and two together and always make four. If something doesn’t add up they want to know why and they won’t rest until they find out. They would never be so brash as to ask direct or impertinent questions but the polite smile masks a brain that is working at the speed of sound. Nothing escapes their attention and their power of analysis is second to none.
Finally we see Mars also changing sign at the end of the week –
Sunday Mars ingress Leo (00.33)
This is also good news as it signals the end of six weeks of Mars meandering through Cancer, his sign of “fall”. Mars is not said to be dignified in Leo but, generally, Mars is much happier in the fire signs and this transition takes Mars out of passive/avoidant mode and into wholehearted and passionate mode. Jupiter will be changing sign next Tuesday and I’ll be talking more about this next week.
Wishing you strength and fearlessness,
With love from Greece
