31 March 2014 – This week’s Astrology

The Astrology Blog – w/b 31 March 2014

You may remember that last week I was talking about the T-Square that is currently dominating the heavens. To recap, two planets in relationship to each other make an aspect, but when we have three (or more) doing the same thing we then have an “aspect pattern”. A T-Square is two planets opposing each other (the line at the top of the T) and both making squares to a third (sitting at the bottom of the stem of the T).

The current T Square is:

Jupiter at 11 degrees of Cancer opposite Pluto at 13 degrees of Capricorn

Jupiter and Pluto both squaring to Uranus at 12 degrees of Aries

This aspect pattern has been featuring since last August but was sensitized over the weekend as last night’s New Moon fell at 10 degrees of Aries. I’ve noticed some alarmism over this T Square, specifically because a fourth planet is gradually moving into the picture (Mars backtracking through Libra will take up position opposite Uranus over the Easter weekend, turning the pattern from a T square into a Grand Cross).

Political astrology is not my area of expertise but yes, Mars is god of war, and yes Putin’s natal Sun is 14 Libra and yes the Uranus – Pluto square alone is the stuff of unrest and invasions but that is the worst case scenario. As above so below, the T Square reflects a situation at crisis point and symbolically captures the turn of events, ie that John Kerry diverted his homebound flight at the last minute to meet Lavrov last night on the New Moon for “hastily arranged talks” (BBC) on the Ukraine crisis after Obama’s call on Russia to pull its troops back from the border.

The other top news story that tragically reflects the T Square is of course missing flight MH370 –

Jupiter (long distance travel and means of)

Opposite Pluto (disappearance, endings)

Both squaring Uranus (shock, suddenness, accidents).

More information on both of these stories will surface throughout the week as the Sun travels through the T – Square.

To return to a personal level, and especially if you have planets on or close to the signs and degrees of those involved in the T Square, you can expect the top issue in your own life to reach some kind of crisis point.

24 March 2014 – This week’s Astrology

The Astrology Blog – w/b 24 March 2014

Mercury takes the lead yet again, being the key player until the end of the week. After a retrograde period which brings muddles and false starts he turned direct on 28 February. This sets things back on track again but it isn’t always a magic wand. A planet’s turning points are called “stations” and like a train pulling into its station it has to slow down first and then stop (turning retrograde). When leaving the station (turning direct) it takes a while to gather speed again.

So, Mercury is now up to full power which is good news in itself. Being the planet of communication so much comes under his jurisdiction, in our personal lives and in business. News, decisions, emails, agreements, getting hold of the right people, having that conversation or finding the right information – all such issues are now getting the green light.

Matters are helped along even further by the fact that Mercury’s first travelling companion is lucky Jupiter. Mercury makes a trine (harmonious) to Jupiter on Wednesday (exact at 13.12 GMT) so this gets the week off to a flying start. Jupiter is not just about good fortune – he’s about expansiveness, optimism, vision, and he loves to say yes. In particular he rules foreign travel and all things connected to overseas, education, publishing and the law. He’s the bringer of justice, joy and opportunity so anything that takes shape for you in the first half of this week is essentially good for you. Themes of generosity, good news and sound advice are also part of the package. And with Jupiter in Cancer, his sign of “exaltation”, you can expect things to settle or move in the right direction if you are dealing with family or property issues.

Mercury’s second aspect is a sextile (harmonious) to Pluto early Friday (exact at 05.31 GMT). This is not as open or as dramatic as the Jupiter contact but, again, it’s good for agreements or news of the final kind. Pluto’s nature is unbending, he loves to wipe the slate clean and start again, and he loves closure. In this respect his answers can therefore be yes or no, but either way it’s all about getting the goal posts firmly in place and woe betide anyone who tries to move them again.

So, if you have an issue that’s been dragging on this is the week to get it wrapped up once and for all. However, do be careful with ultimatums. If you don’t really mean it, don’t say it. Also be prepared to dig deeper for answers and insights in your personal life. In mythology Pluto is god of the underworld and rules the teeming riverbed of the unconscious mind. He was discovered in 1930, an era which brought huge advancement in the world of psychoanalysis (Freud and Jung etc). In many ways the act of entering into therapy constitutes the exploration of our own underworld, unearthing our hidden issues which, once in the light of day, can transform and heal us. Many Plutonic types are natural psychologists or sleuths.

The weekend brings a mixed bag of activity, starting with Venus making a trine (harmonious) to Mars on Saturday (exact at 19.06 GMT) but a square (inharmonious) to Saturn just a couple of hours later (exact at 21.15 GMT). Note that Mars and Saturn both turned retrograde at the beginning of the month and are still slow moving. Also note that, in traditional astrology, these two planets are known as the “malefics” so all Venusian issues need careful handling. Top of the list of course is your love life. How you compromise and negotiate with your other half, and vice versa, will be under scrutiny. If you’re looking for a new partner then make availability a top priority. Squares to Saturn are text book for red lights, for barriers or obstacles that can only be overcome with a great deal of time and effort, or not at all. Otherwise do nothing in haste and if you’re embarking on a new romance don’t underestimate the importance of the courtship period.

Finally we have the New Moon in Aries on Sunday evening (exact at 18.46 GMT). This echoes the themes of the Spring Equinox – the moment when the Sun entered Aries last Thursday – which is the astrological New Year. This is the brand new start of all brand new starts, the starting gun, the beginning of a new adventure and the time to swing new resolutions into action.

This could happen rather more dramatically than usual as this New Moon falls at 10 degrees of Aries, which means that it aligns with the T-Square that is currently dominating the heavens. Two planets in relationship to each other make an aspect, but when we have three (or more) doing the same thing we then have an “aspect pattern”. The T-Square is two planets opposing each other (the line at the top of the T) and both making squares to a third (sitting at the bottom of the stem of the T).

The current T Square is:

Jupiter – whose nature/issues are outlined above – at 11 degrees of Cancer.

Jupiter opposing all or nothing Pluto at 13 degrees of Capricorn.

Jupiter and Pluto both squaring to Uranus at 12 degrees of Aries – Uranus being the planet of drama/the unexpected or events of the exciting/innovative kind.

This aspect pattern first formed last August and has been moving in and out of focus since then as it involves the slower moving planet of Uranus and Pluto, and Jupiter going backwards and forwards during his retrograde period. The T-square will still be “in orb” (still count) for another couple of months but, like Mercury, Jupiter is now picking up speed and is gradually moving out of the crossfire.

T- Squares are not “bad”. They often symbolize friction or tension, but in turn these are so often the elements needed to create change and progress. The New Moon is sensitizing this pattern which, admittedly, is not for the fainthearted. Most of us do not relish upheaval after all but this is not the time for avoidance or the soft options. If you can embrace the warrior spirit of Mars ruled Aries you can accept a challenge and possibly make changes of the kind that you have longed for. Wishing you courage, inspiration and self belief.

The Astrology Blog – w/b 17 March 2014

Mercury takes the lead at the beginning of the week with his ingress into Pisces. You may remember that Mercury entered this sign on the last day of January, but only got as far as 3 degrees before turning retrograde and sliding back into Aquarius. So this is Mercury entering Pisces Take Two, and here’s the sequence now unfolding:

Mercury arrives in Pisces late Monday (22.25 GMT)

Mercury reaches 3 degrees of Pisces on Thursday, the degree at which he turned retrograde

He’ll finally catch up with Neptune at 6 degrees of Pisces on Saturday (the conjunction being exact at 20.17 GMT)

Symbolically this speaks of second chances, and the coming together of a plan that nearly gelled in recent weeks but which came unstuck or was put on hold. This may also apply to a relationship, the coming together of two planets – two people – after a false start or a phase of uncertainty. The Mercury – Neptune combination is highly romantic, the stuff of dreams and the urge to merge.

However, there is also a difficult side to this picture. In traditional astrology Mercury is in “detriment” in this sign as he is planet of the mind and language whereas Pisces is a water sign, the element of feelings. Trying to make sense of emotional matters may be a tall order. We all know what it’s like to try and “reason” with someone “in love”. The two simply don’t mix. Psychologically, falling in love is the collapse of boundaries – fusion cannot happen if you stay totally separate – and a typical Piscean will have issues around personal boundaries, such as wanting to rescue the world or not knowing how to say no. Remember that Neptune is Pisces’ planet, he is Poseidon, god of the sea, so the Piscean/Neptunian realm is the ocean – free flowing, boundless, staggeringly deep and teeming with undercurrents.

Pisces is a highly creative sign but Neptune’s flip side is illusion and deception. Think sea mists, foggy situations in which all the edges are blurred and nothing is as it seems. It’s like looking at the world through a rainy window. They also rule the 12th house of the horoscope, “the Vale of Tears” – nothing swamps you like grief does. The combination of Mercury and Neptune in Pisces is therefore potentially everything from creative projects and love drugs, to sad news, lies and mysteries.

Jeffrey Archer is a textbook example. He’s an Aries but he has Mercury in Pisces opposite Neptune. Here is the weaver of tales, the consummate story teller, the man whose books have sold 250 million copies, but whose political career was blighted by scandal eventually leading to a conviction and imprisonment for perjury. Nothing is as imaginative as a Mercury – Neptune aspect but it’s all about appropriateness – when is it “right” and when is it “wrong” to smudge the line between fact and fantasy? In a work of fiction it’s a gift, in a courtroom it’s a criminal offence with dire consequences.

Neptune also rules mysticism and altered states of consciousness, including alcohol. Again, be aware of the double edged sword. If you’re drinking for fun and celebration then all should be fine, but if you’re drowning your sorrows you risk opening the floodgates in a big way. So please be very mindful this coming weekend, have your special friends on hand if you are in crisis yourself or be the sensitive counselor and supporter if it’s the other way around. Pay special attention to the emotional issues that swim to the surface, yours or someone else’s. and above all do not risk any drink – drive situation.

In complete contrast to this sensitivity minefield Tuesday brings the crisp and clear Venus in Aquarius sextile (harmonious) Uranus, Aquarius’ planet (exact at 19.01 GMT). In a nutshell Venus is love, pleasure and money, and the positive face of Uranus is innovation and brilliance, surprises of the exciting kind and refusing to play by outdated rule books. Just because something has always been done in a certain way doesn’t mean that it can’t change. Breaking the rules and breaking the mould are the themes to look out for.

Originality is in there too. Stamp work projects with your own special hallmark, brainstorm with your colleagues or friends for ideas and answers and don’t let the grass grow under your feet. Uranus loves teamwork and also immediacy and spontaneity, often of the head spinning kind. In love this is the classic aspect for being “swept off your feet” and the stuff of instant attractions. It’s also brilliant for socializing and networking. Say yes to a working lunch or to an after work invite for Tuesday – you could meet someone fascinating and influential.

The electric Venus – Uranus get together paves the way to the Spring Equinox on Thursday as the Sun enters Aries (ingress at 16.58 GMT). This is the first sign of the zodiac so this is the astrological New Year. What better time to review your resolutions? How did you start the year, what did you want to achieve and are you on track? If you’re realizing that you want something completely different now’s the time to look very closely at your true ambitions and desires.

Whatever is “born” on the Spring Equinox holds the seeds of fruitfulness so look out for anything in the brand new start category. Move forwards with directness and a “do it now” policy. Be self-ish. Aries is the “me” sign so it’s important to recognize what is right for you as opposed to what everyone else might think is right for you. Capturing the right vibe and injecting spring energy is linked to harnessing the Aries qualities of individuality, independence and being a self starter. Whatever snaps you out of victim role – which is basically any situation in which you apportion blame – is the way to go. Substitute “poor me” for “wonderful me”! The Spring Equinox is the time to celebrate your ego, to recognize the supreme importance of good self esteem, to recognize your absolute right to be here and to remember that the only person who can live your life is you.

Network She monthly horoscope

The Astrology Blog – w/b 10 March 2014

You may remember that one of the big events of last week was Jupiter turning direct last Thursday. He’s now on the last leg of his journey through Cancer, sign of home, family and nurture, so in addition to the universal Jupiter concerns I suggested that this may also include “making new arrangements for those who need care”.

As my twin Sue and I are Sagittarians, one of Jupiter’s signs, these turning points are especially strong for us. What happened last Thursday? Sue came back from Lidls with… a puppy. She had been abandoned in the car park and was cowering under the trollies – not the first time this has happened as everyone knows that the expats use this foreign (Jupiter) supermarket and that we’re the most likely to rescue an animal in need. We have named her Izzy – she went from frightened and confused to happy and playful within minutes and, of course, it now feels as if she’s always been here…

She has seriously lucked out – Jupiter being planet of good fortune – but maybe we have too. Like we needed another animal… but she has the loveliest temperament and the only reason we wouldn’t keep her is if we find her a new home, which we are talking about doing… half heartedly…

What’s happening this week? Mercury’s on the move – ie picking up speed after switching from retrograde to direct motion ten days ago – but there’s a final barrier to break through today. Be prepared for a slow start or the Monday morning blues as Mercury squares up to Saturn (exact Tuesday morning 06.15 GMT). In essence, Mercury is the mind planet, ruling communication in all its guises, but the square brings out the tough side to Saturn.

This tends to manifest in obstacle courses and time issues – such as delays, waiting for answers, a key person being off sick, cancellations, getting stuck in traffic, battling frustration, forgetfulness or apathy – yours or other people’s. It’s like being put on hold, for hours… is anybody there? Or it’s just one of those days when nothing seems to go right or come together and you end up achieving little or nothing of what you set out to do. So think ahead more than usual and allow extra time for all important matters, such as getting to a meeting or any destination, and catch yourself when trying to force square pegs into round holes. Avoid arguments, especially of the type that no side can win, accept differences of opinion for just that – differences – and abandon anything that is not A Good Idea.

For some this Mercury – Saturn square signals a major finale as it’s the third and last time for this aspect, the first two being 25 January and 19 February. Anything that has been a long haul over these last six weeks is therefore at the point of completion, or is as good as it gets.

The second aspect of the week supports the idea that other things are shaping up in a meaningful way as the Sun trines Saturn on Thursday evening (exact at 21.17 GMT). This brings out the more positive face of Saturn – productivity, firm agreements and generally getting your act together. With this aspect forming in water signs (Sun Pisces, Saturn Scorpio) emotional commitments, acts of compassion and kindness, creative projects and any concerns close to your heart are in there too.

Saturn is the grown up of the heavens so, regardless of which sign he is traveling through, he universally stands for maturity, realism and taking life seriously. This is especially important at the moment as we currently have no personal planets (Sun through to Saturn) in earth signs, and we won’t have until the Sun enters Taurus on 20 April. Of the outer planets only Pluto is in an earth sign, Capricorn, but as he is the slowest moving of them all (taking 248 years to travel through all 12 signs) this is a generational backdrop and therefore is not in our day by day considerations.

A horoscope is considered to be well balanced if all four elements are represented amongst the personal planets. A missing element tends to speak of that which we need to seek and learn about. The element of earth is not just about being practical. That is one of the Sun sign myths lol that is easy to dismantle. I know plenty of earth sign people who are practical to the point of being able to turn their hand to anything but I know others too who don’t even know how to change a plug and who are hopeless in the kitchen. Earthiness manifests in many other ways – such as being grounded, connected with your body, sensuality – enjoying all the senses – stoicism and a strong work ethic. It’s about steadiness, staying serene under pressure and handling life’s dramas with a dry humour rather than with hysterics. Think Victoria Wood – she’s a text book Taurus!

So, with earth out of the picture, good aspects to steadying Saturn are compensatory. Note also that Saturn is currently “stationary retrograde” – in other words, he has only just switched to backwards motion and is therefore hardly moving at all. As above, so below. Look out for a situation that is slow moving but which is nevertheless a turning point and which could set the tone for several months to come. Top tip? Get organized. Map out a workload, anticipate where you will need helping hands and be realistic about money.

What else? Mars has also just switched to retrograde and Friday brings Mercury trine Mars (exact at 16.18 GMT). Again, this is great for agreements and doing deals. However, be incisive and get to the point. Mars is the god of war but you don’t have to be aggressive – quite the opposite as Mars is in Libra, Venus’ sign of partnership and negotiation – but gentle assertiveness could achieve great things.

Finally, we have the Full Moon at the weekend, exact at 17.09 GMT on Sunday. As the Sun is in Pisces then the Full Moon falls in the opposite sign of Virgo – one of the earth signs – so the importance of this element makes itself felt even more. At a universal level all Full Moons equal fruition, full cycles and the sensitizing of family and emotional issues so be on full alert for domestics. As I always say, every A & E and police station know to brace themselves on these nights. At a particular level, matters ruled by Virgo will also be in the spotlight at the weekend – work and health being at the top of the list. Also think about taking a leaf out of Virgo’s book and approach life with care, an analytical mind and an eye for detail for the best results.

The Astrology Blog w/b 3 March 2014

You may remember that I ended last week’s blog with the checklist for Mercury turning direct:

Important information comes to light

Rumours are squashed when the truth outs

You find the right person to deal with the problem

People get back to you or make decisions

Computer glitches are solved/disputes are settled

Lost objects are found

Mercury switched back to forwards motion in Aquarius on Friday afternoon but, no, my printer cable has not reappeared (yet) but yes, important information came to light. Literally. Just in case you were wondering Greece is not warm all year around and we have a wet, cold winter that is not that much different from the UK. We decided against using the central heating in the new house because of the extortionate cost of the diesel to run it (no mains gas on the island) and were using the open log fire instead. On Friday afternoon, unbeknownst to us for a few hours, a chimney fire started. It was only when it stopped pouring with rain, and when all the power went out, that we realized that there was a problem. You may also remember that in last week’s blog I talked about the fact that the strong Uranus/Aquarius theme signaled that “the usual theme of the unexpected or dramatic may well be more obvious”…

I have noticed many times that Mercury tends to deliver a last kick as he turns direct and this one was a classic. Any astro textbook will tell you that a retrograde Mercury signals “problems with communication and transport”. Imagine ringing the fire brigade, discovering that nobody spoke a word of English except “fire?”, and then having to lapse into another language (my Greek is basic, fine for day to day stuff, and my scrambled brain had to somehow go into overdrive) to give directions to a house up a mountain 20 minutes drive away from the fire station while smoke was billowing out of the roof! I had also forgotten to charge up my mobile earlier in the day and had just enough battery to make this call and rally help from nearby friends. Thank heavens for friends (who are located in the 11th house, natural house of Aquarius) especially my Greek friend Katerina who took over re giving driving instructions. Never have I been so relieved to see the cavalry come over the hill!

Also thank heavens for Mike who was actually a fireman in one of his previous lives and was straight up a ladder with a hose – he was the hero of the hour. It took three hours to get it all under control and the firemen were brilliant, another item on the list coming good – you find the right people for the job. So, that will pay me to move into a house under a retrograde Mercury! It turned out that the chimney lining was damaged, the cladding was not of the fireproof kind and there are all kinds of wiring problems going on. The workmen have been here all day! We were saved from a full scale blaze because of the torrential rain having damped everything down, a lovely showing of savior Jupiter trine the Sun in Pisces/New Moon in Pisces (sign of mutable water) in the early hours of Saturday. I feel incredibly lucky.

Hey ho, nothing like a brush with disaster to blow your routine to bits but this week’s astrology is very encouraging for restoring order and moving on. This evening brings the Sun sextile (harmonious) Pluto. You’ll often read the word “transformation” for this planet – he is symbolic death/rebirth – but I prefer the word “transformative” as this has less of the magic wand connotation. Plutonic changes tend to be a process rather than something instantaneous, often bringing situations in which you have to start somehow or somewhere from scratch. For us it’s a big clean up job, restoring order and getting rid of the smell!

As this aspect coincides with Mercury getting back on track this bodes well for invoking the positive qualities of powerful Pluto. If he could speak he would now be saying, ok, let’s start again. The Sun in magical and mystical Pisces would be saying, rescue the dream. Change for the better, healing, starting new projects or wiping the slate clean – anything that smacks of out with the old and in with the new fits the bill.

The other two main events of the week underline this message. Firstly, Venus finally changes sign. Venus would normally change sign about every four weeks but because of a long retrograde period she’s been in Capricorn since the beginning of November. This was starting to get seriously boring. Venus is love, pleasure and the sweet things of life, whereas Capricorn is one of Saturn’s signs, planet of effort, endurance and obstacles. In essence, Venus has been making very hard work of love and life! It has been a long grind, you may feel as if you’ve been working on a relationship or a project for far too long, or that your results have been very hard won, or that it’s two steps forwards and one step back. You may feel that you haven’t been having enough fun or that money has been far too tight. You may feel that life has become all work and no play, or that work itself needs to be a lot more interesting.

Venus moves on into Aquarius on Wednesday (the ingress being exact at 21.04 GMT) and will travel through this sign until 6 April. True, this is Saturn’s other sign, but also co-ruled by Uranus. It’s also an air sign, known for conviviality, curiosity and innovation. This could be a breath of fresh air. Get together with the friends you haven’t seen for weeks, throw parties or join groups. In business get networking, revamp your website and link up to other people’s. Looking for work? What grabs you? You spend a lot of hours every week doing a job so if you want to live the life you love and love the life you live there’s no better time for branching out – or tunneling out.

Love issues all spin around the friendship factor. Focus on more on the things you enjoy doing together. Unattached? Don’t be tempted to override compatibility issues. It doesn’t matter how gorgeous someone is, Venus in Aquarius is somewhat disdainful of lust. She’s far more interested in the meeting of minds and what you have in common. As Aquarius is also the sign of technology as well as friendship/groups this is actually the ideal time for internet dating. Invoke the objectivity of Aquarius and go shopping for what you really want in a partner.

Finally we have Jupiter switching back to direction motion on Thursday (exact at 10.43 GMT). He’s been retrograde since 7 November, just a couple of days after Venus entered Capricorn, so it’s a new cycle in more ways than one. Jupiter is the planet of luck and good fortune, and his main principle is expansion, so wherever your world has become small or limited now’s the time to think “bigger and better”. With Jupiter turning around in Cancer, sign of home, family and nurture, this may start at the literal level of making bigger and better use of your living space, or making new arrangements for those who need care.

At a more universal level Jupiter rules travel, education, publishing and legal concerns, so turning points in connection to any of these issues are exceptionally well starred. Jupiter is also the planet of faith and freedom. There have been a lot of tough situations in the last few months that have seemed designed to challenge our beliefs or keep us trapped. If you’re aware of being in any kind of victim role then Jupiter’s turning point is doubly important but the bigger picture message is to believe in yourself. There’s a huge world out there and you belong to it.

The true beauty of astrology is that it is a mirror, always reflecting back to us the true state of affairs and reminding us that things really do happen when they are meant to and for a reason. As above, so below. The picture now is like The Chariot in the Tarot. Settle yourself back into the driving seat, pick up the reins, steer your way out of an obstacle course and into wide new horizons, liberate yourself from unhealthy pattern or relationships, say yes to new opportunities, rekindle enthusiasm and optimism. This may all sound like a tall order but start by being lovingly true to yourself, focus on moving forwards and trust that the right signposts will appear. Jupiter’s on the job!

New book

'BE YOUR OWN ASTROLOGER' is Joanna's latest book.
'Learning your own astrology is always more complicated than people imagine but Joanna has presented the clearest possible pathway to astrological self-knowledge'.
Cygnus Community Review

“The narrative is top-notch; it’s easy to follow, well organized, and will quickly give the absolute beginner a quantum boost to the next level of astrological knowledge.”
“The further the beginner gets into this book, the more engaging yet complex the material becomes. The later chapters mark entry points into further studies, but with Be Your Own Astrologer, you get the overall landscape of what astrology is all about.”
