24 February 2014 – This week’s Astrology

I’m writing this blog on Sunday evening, within a couple of hours of the Sun – Neptune conjunction in Pisces becoming exact. It’s the first piece to be written at my desk in the new house. To the right I have a window overlooking the olive trees, to the left a view of the sea, the mountains of the mainland in the distance swathed in mist and low cloud as the evening light fades. The exhaustion of moving has been so worth it.

The fun and games with retrograde Mercury have of course kept us busy. Never in my life have I tried to troubleshoot in advance as much as I have on this occasion. Mercury retrograde in Aquarius, sign of technology, sounded all my alarm bells about potential internet problems so I spent a lot of time asking questions and pestering poor Sue and Mike – who moved in two weeks ahead of me – about the engineer’s visits etc. I was assured all was well. Of course it wasn’t. I had no internet at all for the first two days, that was then sorted (although the phone upstairs still doesn’t work) but within a couple of hours of the engineer leaving we discovered that our three computers were in conflict and we couldn’t all be on line at the same time.

Then followed the perfect showing of Mercury retrograde in Aquarius – sign of the collective – as we carefully negotiated with each other about who needed to be on line most and at what time! For me this was the first lesson in communal life and happily we all managed it without stress. This is good news as it was the “initial transaction” – the first test being the cameo of what is to come. We’ve also had the challenge of bringing together two families of animals – now 8 cats and 2 dogs in total – and working out feeding routines and who sleeps where. So far, so good…

Mercury will turn direct on Friday (at 14.01 GMT), just part of the picture of a week that is packed with major astrological events. Firstly we have the third and final sextile (harmonious) between Venus and Saturn, exact Tuesday morning at 04.51 GMT. The first was 23 November and the second was 11 January. As Venus is in Capricorn (and on the last leg of her long journey through this sign) this final aspect to Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, feels portentous. In essence Venus is love, money and pleasure – Saturn is organization, work structure and limitations. However and wherever you see these two issues working together, especially in a way that has been unfolding since the end of last year, such scenarios will now be reaching their finale.

For me it is finally being able to relax and enjoy the new home, everything now unpacked and in its place after all the upheaval and massive de-junking. For another it has been debt consolidation, a good outcome but not without conflict, and for another it has been the end of a romantic hope. Saturn is not easy at the best of times but he urges us to stay real, practical and effortful. He is the original “chin up”. I love these old sayings – they don’t come from nowhere. Note the next time you feel defeated and watch your body language. Your whole body slumps and your chin dips down to the floor, pulling all your energy down with it. When you consciously lift your chin up you pull your energy up.

The second big event is the Jupiter – Uranus square, exact at 07.34 GMT on Wednesday morning. This major aspect first formed on 21 August last year and will repeat for the third and final time on 20 April. (Jupiter in Cancer, Uranus in Aries) As this middle contact forms as Mercury is poised to turn direct – in Aquarius which is Uranus’ own sign – the usual theme of the unexpected or dramatic may well be more obvious. Look out for “breaking news” that sets everyone talking. If you have planets or angles at or close to 10 degrees of the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) then the drama may be yours! Also remember that Jupiter is the Greater Benefic – he is good for us – so the bigger picture message is to dare to be different, to embrace change or to look at where you may need to take more risk in your life.

This is underlined on Saturday which brings the New Moon in Pisces (08.01 GMT), just four hours after the Sun trines (harmonious aspect) Jupiter. Again there’s a kind of double whammy theme going on here as Pisces is ruled by Jupiter. Whatever has been on hold now gets a real shot in the arm. Plans and decisions related to travel, education, legal concerns, creating more space or liberating yourself from anything that is no longer working for you all get a huge tick. As part of the breaking news theme listen out for big celebrations.

The rest of the weekend is not without its hiccups as both Mars and Saturn switch to retrograde motion – Mars will be backtracking through Libra until mid May and Saturn will be backtracking through Scorpio until mid July. If you’ve got a long running battle on your hands then prepare for the next round. If you have business or relationship problems then start to think about different tactics, including going back to the things that worked in the past or how you will handle things differently with the benefit of hindsight and experience.

The final event of the week is Venus square Mars on Sunday (exact at 20.05 GMT) – made all the more significant by the fact that Mars is “stationary” (stuck at 27 degrees of Libra for the next two weeks as he turns around) and that this is Venus’ last aspect before she finally changes sign. Venus has been meandering through Capricorn since early November but is now picking up speed and will enter Aquarius in the middle of next week. Venus and Mars are the love planets so again relationship issues take centre stage, especially in terms of ending old cycles and embarking upon the new. Be honest with yourself as well as with your significant other.

In essence this is a hugely transitional week and many will be facing crossroads, making decisions and establishing new arrangements that will take a couple of weeks to settle. I’ll leave you with the checklist for Mercury turning direct:

·         Important information comes to light

·         Rumours are squashed when the truth outs

·         You find the right person to deal with the problem

·         People get back to you or make decisions

·         Computer glitches are solved/disputes are settled

·         Lost objects are found

… which hopefully will include the power cable for my printer which mysteriously disappeared in the hour that it took to move my computer/printer from the old apartment. These were the last things to be moved, I deliberately left them to the very last minute so that nothing could go missing … thank you Mercury, very funny!

17 February 2014 – This week’s Astrology

Well, this is the last blog I will write in this apartment. Tomorrow I really do go… yes I’ve been moving for the last two weeks, as in gradually shifting stuff day by day, so it’s sort of gone into an unreal state. But there’s something very interesting about a serious de-junk and feeling your life being stripped back to basics and to what is really important. As I sit here in this empty, echoing study, only my desk and computer left, I wonder if this is the essence of retrograde Mercury?

Mercury again is the key player this week, squaring up to Saturn for the second time early Wednesday (exact at 07.12 GMT) – the first time was 25 January and the third and final time will be 11 March. Saturn loves austerity, frugality and minimalism so for me these dates bracket the moving experience. What do they bracket for you? Whatever has been an ongoing challenge reaches its epicenter now – and may include someone not talking to you, not knowing what you want, struggling to learn someone else’s “language”, accepting that there are no immediate answers to a big issue and figuring out how to get back to the drawing board and to make more effective use of your time and skills. In essence, what is needed should now be crystallizing in some way, but with the square to Saturn we always have to be prepared for setbacks or disappointments to characterize the learning curve, or to be consciously aware that trying to rush or push anything at this time will only be self defeating. Slow down, think, wait, one day at a time… it’s still early days. For now there are probably more questions than answers.

Note that retrograde Mercury signals that second thoughts of all kinds are there for a reason and to focus on information gathering. You know what you think, now’s the time to find out what other people’s opinions are. This includes everyone from your other half to someone who’s an expert in their own field. Also be easier on yourself. If a resolution has fallen by the wayside you can always try again, if not tomorrow then at least by the end of the month when Mercury turns. Also note that nothing is written in stone right now, even if you’ve been told that it is.

Mercury makes a minor aspect (a semi-sextile, which means that he is exactly one sign away) to Venus on Friday (exact at 17.09 GMT). Mercury – Venus contacts are textbook for “love talk” of any kind, whether it’s with your other half, being chatted up, or having a heart to heart with someone who’s important to you. In the past I’ve often found this aspect to signal the closeness of girlfriends, and how someone often steps in to help or give support. Note that Venus is still finishing her long trek through Capricorn – one of Saturn’s signs – so loving hands are of the mature, steadying and realistic kind or the best kind of new romance will be of the slowly, slowly kind, gradually getting to know someone and going for the long distance rather than a sprint finish.

Just as you might be thinking that this all sounds rather cool and clinical, never fear. The Sun enters Pisces tomorrow evening (the ingress exact at 18.01 GMT), a water sign associated with huge sensitivity and romanticism. Furthermore the Sun’s first aspect will be a conjunction with Neptune – Pisces planet who in mythology is Poseidon god of the sea, who is on his epic sea voyage through his own sign (the last time being about 175 years ago!).

So we’re making the transition from the air sign of logical but aloof Aquarius into the water sign of Pisces and the realms of Neptune. This is a bit like coming down through the skies in a parachute to land in the middle of a boundless ocean. Start with a willingness to get down to the emotional nitty-gritty, and to look at a situation through someone else’s eyes. Empathy will count for a lot more than usual.

For me the move coincides with the Pisces ingress, and with that sign on my IC (the angle in the horoscope that locates home) it’s perfect for moving to the house with a view of the sea! However Pisces is also about very deep feelings and tears. With the exception of my family home when I was growing up this is the place where I have lived the longest. Closing the door for the last time after 12 years is going to be very emotional.

As above, so below, lots of things are going to be sensitized and emotional in the coming weeks, and especially now as we travel through the last ten days of Mercury’s retrograde journey. Go gently.

The Astrology Blog – w/b 10 February 2014

It’s a slow start in the heavens for the first half of the week so, if you haven’t got to do anything in a hurry then let yourself off the hook. The communication planet Mercury turned retrograde last Thursday evening and if he isn’t already tying you in knots then try to do as much advance thinking and planning as possible. If you can troubleshoot a small problem now you may stop it from turning into a big one but, even so, proceed with caution. This applies especially to saying things that will be hard to take back or to making commitments that you already suspect will be difficult to honour. Similarly, take other people’s promises or assurances with a pinch of salt for the time being.

The second delaying factor in play is the Sun squaring up to Saturn, exact tomorrow evening at 19.58 GMT. This is like trying to force a square peg into a round hole. It’s not going to happen without bending or breaking. Know your limitations and accept other people’s. Also watch your energy levels and your general well being. The Sun is the life giver and when in conflict with Saturn it can signal ill health, trying to push yourself too hard and exhausting your reserves. If you’re recovering from an illness or injury nobody is handing out any prizes for going back to work far too soon. Any issue that is stuck or resistant either needs a big rethink or it will simply need time, especially as Saturn Lord of Time is now moving very slowly, in readiness for turning retrograde at the beginning of next month.

However, just when you’re thinking that you might as well dive under the duvet for the rest of the week, there’s an upswing midweek as Mercury reverses back into Aquarius in the early hours of Thursday. He is much happier in this sign than he is in Pisces, which is his sign of detriment in which he is said to be mute. So Thursday is the day when you can pick up a conversation that was left hanging at the end of last month or when rethinks of any kind will start to bear fruit. Information you’ve been waiting on could suddenly slot into place or missing pieces of a puzzle will appear. It’s great when a plan starts to come together!

This theme gets stronger as we head towards the weekend as Mercury enters into a dance with the Sun and Mars:

Sun trine (harmonious) Mars – Saturday 02.07 GMT

Sun conjunct Mercury – Saturday 20.23 GMT

Mercury trine Mars – Sunday 08.20 GMT

The conjunction to the Sun is especially important as Mercury will then be “cazimi” – briefly drawing power from the heart of the Sun. Meetings, news, conversation or insights can all suddenly produce those light bulb moments so look out for these, they can make a big difference. Someone new coming into your life, or even back into your life, will also have a significant role to play.

Do note that Mars is starting to slow down too as he will also turn retrograde at the beginning of next month. In fact this is a rather trying time in terms of retrograde planets – Venus has only just gone direct, Mercury is now retrograde, and as soon as he turns direct again Mars and Saturn will then turn retrograde. This is very testing. No sooner have you dealt with one issue than another becomes complicated but the inherent lessons are to prioritise what matters to you. You can’t be everywhere, you can’t be all things to all people and you must do what makes you happy. This is not selfish, it is in fact the opposite. When you are healthy and enjoying life you have a positive effect on all of those around you as well as on yourself.

What better time to start putting this into real practice than with the Full Moon in Leo which is the highlight of the week, exact at 23.54 GMT on Friday night just a couple of hours before the Sun/Mercury/Mars alliance kicks off. So this is a glorious Full Moon – in the big bold fire sign of the Lion – and it’s going to be a wonderful Valentine’s night if you’re in love and planning something special with your other half. Leo is creative, expressive and loves to be lavish so why not pull out all the stops? Leo is also the performer of the zodiac and loves an audience, so make your loved one the centre of your attention and your universe, even if it’s only for one night!

If you’re looking for love it’s a definite yes to a Valentine’s occasion for singles. Leo loves courage and eye catching splendor, so don’t be a cowardly lion. Dress up to the nines, go to the ball Cinderella or out on the town with your mates. Friday is the night when love and passion will be on everyone’s mind so grab a piece of the action.

As well as all affairs of the heart the Full Moon in Leo is wonderful for recognition. In business it’s time to draw attention to your achievements and to showcase your work, especially if you’re self employed. As much as we need to know our areas of weakness and, as I said earlier, to recognize our limitations, it’s equally important to play to our strengths and to have the confidence to do so. In short, use the beginning of the week then to take the pressure off yourself/clear the decks and the second half of the week to rev up again/do what inspires you.

HOROSCOPES

For an overview of the month and your FEBRUARY horoscope here’s the link to the column on Network She:

http://www.networkshe.co.uk/category/horoscope

The Astrology Blog – w/b 3 February 2014

Well, usually I face the challenge of condensing and interpreting a lot of astrology into a small space. This week the picture is quite the opposite as it so happens that between now and next Tuesday 11 February there are no major aspects, no lunations (new or full moons) and no ingresses (planets changing sign).

There is however the phenomenon of Mercury turning retrograde on Thursday evening (21.44 GMT). As regular readers may recall, Mercury’s backtracking periods happen roughly three times a year for about three weeks at a time. All things related to communication and travel are potentially complicated during this periods.

Mercury has only just arrived in Pisces – the ingress being 31 January – and because he is “stationing” (getting ready to switch direction) he is moving very slowly up until Thursday evening. Think of him as splashing around in the shallows and testing the water, then changing his mind and retreating to dry land. Symbolically, then, this translates into having second thoughts, doubting the wisdom of a decision, back pedaling and battling with feelings that don’t make sense or which leave you feeling as if you’ve somehow missed the point. In this respect some of us will still find ourselves in deep waters. This will apply especially to you if you have planets or angles in the first three degrees of this water sign, or in the other mutable signs of Gemini, Virgo and Sagittarius.

Mercury is the trickster of the heavens and he loves puns. As he turns around in Pisces, sign of mutable (free flowing) water look out for plumbing problems. For some there will be more flooding problems too or delays in claiming insurance for water damage.

Traditional astrology assigns meticulous and analytical Virgo as one of Mercury’s signs of dignity – where he operates best. He is therefore in one of his signs of detriment in the opposite sign of Pisces. The element of water rules the feeling function so expect touchy subjects to become highly sensitized.

The bigger picture message is that you are not necessarily making the wrong decisions or that emotional issues will not necessarily remain unresolved. You should however expect teething problems with any kind of new arrangement and definitely work harder at keeping a sense of proportion if you feel uncertain. At a practical level too if you feel that everything is getting on top of you then the message is to stop, regroup and get on top of everything. And if you feel that someone is not telling you the truth or that they are keeping difficult feelings to themselves then they are almost certainly are. Kid gloves at the ready. When you find yourself spilling feelings out into an email please think twice before you hit that send button, or if you’re on the receiving end try to respond with compassion rather than indignation! The things that are splurged this week will probably be the things that we regret saying or to which there are no easily obvious or mutually satisfactory answers. Oh yes, and watch the “in vino veritas” while you’re at it! One of the best movie lines ever, from Sideways – two guys touring the wine valleys of California – was, “oh no, did you drink and dial?” (The last word of which dates the movie but you get the point.)

Mercury will slide back into the previous sign of Aquarius next week on the 13th, and will turn direct again in Aquarius on the last day of this month, but until then here’s the usual quick checklist for how to survive Mercury mischief:

·         Assume nothing, double check everything

·         When in doubt, do nothing

·         Keep a close watch on all belongings – especially phones, keys, cameras and any techno goods

·         Ensure phone is fully charged when you’re travelling

·         Don’t travel unless you have to

·         Take extra care with form filling/signing on dotted lines

·         Buy yourself time re major decisions

·         Back up all your computer work

·         Operate by “re” words – review, rethink, rework, revisit etc

On a more cheerful note – hurray – retrograde Mercury is great for getting “back” in touch. That person who keeps flitting across your mind? Call them. Also get back to plans and ideas that have been on hold. It’s best not to take anything off the drawing board until the end of the month, when you will be looking for ways to capture that positive turning point and use it to its greatest effect, but in between now and then you can cover a great deal of ground and learn a lot.

What else? Remember that by comparison Venus has just turned direct – also on 31 January, the day that Mercury arrived in Pisces. As I commented last week, this feels contradictory. You may feel as if two very distinct threads in your life are being pulled in different directions – one unraveling while the other starts to knit together very neatly. It may be that the two are, in fact, somehow working together, reminding you that the skills you need in one situation (or with one person) are not necessarily the same skills that you need in another (or with a different person). While Pisces is an intensely emotional water sign, Venus is powering up again in earthy Capricorn – a sign associated with work, goal setting and endurance.

Because of Venus’ retrograde period she’s been in Capricorn since the beginning of November and still has a way to go, finally entering the next sign of Aquarius at the beginning of March. So Venusian issues – primarily love, money, and all desires close to your heart – are currently a long slow build. Things of beauty can be achieved but with care, attention, respect and patience, whether it’s a relationship, a career or a home.

The latter of course is especially close to my heart! The Move is happening – my sister and partner are in the villa – but with Mercury poised to turn retrograde it is, surprise, total chaos. Having done most of the slog in the pouring rain there is now no hot water, no heating, no internet and their life’s possessions sit in a mountain of boxes. Anyone who’s ever moved knows what this feels like and it’s little wonder that it’s in the top 5 of the stress list. My move happens mid February … which is when Mercury slides back into Aquarius, just praying all internet problems sorted by then – anything else I can deal with!
