What’s happening this week?

The mind planet Mercury steals the headlines. This planet travels through all 12 signs once a year, never moving far away from the Sun, but because of three retrograde periods within each year his journey through each sign varies enormously in duration. At his fastest he can whizz through a sign in a couple of weeks, at his slowest the journey is a couple of months.

The latter is now in play as Mercury arrived in Scorpio yesterday but will start to slow down next week in readiness for turning retrograde on 21 October. He’ll be in Scorpio until 5 December so we’ll be talking about this placing and what it means a lot more over the next two months. For now, as ever when you have advanced warning of Mercury going retrograde no matter what the sign, the best advice is to get ahead! Any important plan, project, conversation, decision will benefit from immediate attention rather than leaving anything to chance.

What’s happening this week?

We marked the Autumn Equinox last night as the Sun entered Libra. I am not going to dwell on the tragic news headlines other than to say that the Equinox also marks the close of a very heavy cycle and the Libra lessons are now paramount.

What’s happening this week?

This is what you might call a Big Week up in the heavens as several major themes are all unfolding and finalizing at the same time. Don’t worry, next week is a lot lighter, but this is what we have to work through first:

The Grand Cross

The slower moving planets Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto are still forming an aspect pattern called a T Square. Jupiter in Cancer is opposite Pluto in Capricorn – and they are both square to Uranus in Aries.

This week this aspect pattern becomes a Grand Cross as fast moving Mercury in Libra takes up position on the fourth point. (You may remember that Venus did the same thing about a month ago)

As Mercury is currently moving quickly he makes aspects to the other three planets in succession and the Grand Cross formation lasts until the end of the week. Mercury was square Pluto over the weekend, opposes Mercury this morning and will square Jupiter in the early hours of Friday.

The most obvious interpretation is a “cross to bear” – a situation that is stuck, where people are at loggerheads with each other, or a situation that is at breaking point as tension builds and stretches everyone’s nerves. Also look out for scenarios of having to go through with something you wish you hadn’t agreed to but now have to make the best of.

On a more proactive note the arrival of talk-talk Mercury in Libra – the Scales – could be extremely helpful. This feels like a chance to thrash out differences and to arrive at new agreements. Stress can actually be reduced by involving a new person – someone to help out, to talk to, to help share the load, and so on. If nothing else Mercury in Libra is brilliant at seeing all sides to an issue and appreciating everyone’s point of view.

Saturn sextile Pluto, and Pluto turning direct

The theme of resolution is underlined by the fact that Pluto – the slowest moving planet of them all – turns direct on Friday evening, having been retrograde since the middle of April. He also aligns with serious Saturn at the weekend for the third and final time (a sextile that was exact on 27 December last year and again on 8 March.)

When it comes to change Pluto has no equal. Known as the planet of “death and rebirth” he loves to demolish in order to rebuild and he slams the door behind him. This turning point could easily relate to a matter that’s been unfolding for months. There’s a sense of reaching the end of the road with anything that is simply no longer sustainable, the “I can’t do this anymore” or “someone else has had too much of my power and now I want it back again.” Note also that these two planets are in “mutual reception” – currently occupying each other’s signs, Saturn being in Pluto’s sign of Scorpio and Pluto being in Saturn’s sign of Capricorn, strengthening the pact between them. The old order changeth.

Venus conjunct Saturn, sextile Pluto

The love planet Venus also travelling through Scorpio plays into this scenario, meeting up with Saturn in Scorpio on Wednesday evening and aligning with Pluto a few hours later. This can play out in two ways – love gets serious, intense and needs huge commitment, or a love issue comes screeching to a halt in front of a great big concrete wall. Love triangles will be especially sensitive.

The Full Moon in Pisces

We could say, in fact, that everything will be super sensitive midweek! The Full Moon is traditionally a time of enlightenment, insights and fruition. However she is also notorious for domestics and in Pisces, arguably the most sensitive of all the signs, the emotional tides will be high and real feelings will swim to the surface. This sign also rules alcohol so be careful what you do/say/agree to after a few glasses of inhibition loosening wine! If you’re madly in love and cracking open the champagne you should be fine, but if you want to raise a touchy subject with anyone/need to stay in control then I’d go for the soda water. Finally – drink/drive is always a no-no of course but this week it’s a NO-NO. Stay safe.

What’s happening this week?

We have two planets changing signs this week, events that are known as “ingresses”. These signal the beginning of new cycles that are characterized by the nature of the planet being expressed through the new sign.

Mercury, planet of the mind that rules absolutely everything to do with communication, changes sign this morning and enters the air sign of Libra, sign of the Scales. Most of us associate this sign with balance, fairness and the ability to see all sides of an argument. This often results in indecision. Libra rules the 7th house of significant one to one relationships so the Scales also symbolize partnership. Those who have natal Mercury in Libra (ie in their own horoscope) tend to be natural negotiators and diplomats, with “what do you think?” at the top of their question list. This placing rewards compromise, but of the genuine active kind rather than the passive. This is not about handing over the power to someone else but about seeking agreements and answers that satisfy both parties.

On Wednesday morning Venus enters Scorpio. This is of course the love planet but Venus rules everything to do with life’s pleasures – all the sweet things of life – and is also the universal significator for money. The good news is that her first aspect is a trine (harmonious) to sensitive Neptune, strongly placed in his own sign of Pisces. This aspect will be exact first thing Saturday morning. The not so good news is that Venus is said to be in “detriment” – one of her weakest placings – in Scorpio. It’s a water sign, element of the emotions, and feelings run deep. It’s a sign characterized by passion, intensity, determination and power (think Scorpio Hillary Clinton) but the flip side is jealousy, the need to control, obsession and the need for revenge (think Fatal Attraction).

Mmm, quite difficult to sit down and have rational discussions (Mercury in Libra) when you can cut the emotional atmosphere with a knife and someone wants to boil your rabbit (Venus in Scorpio). Bottom line? Think first, act second. Don’t be propelled forwards by powerful feelings without thinking of the consequences first. Ask to what extent is this about the other person, to what extent is this about me? Say no to anything that smacks of destructive behavior on either side.

Along the way Mars squares up to Saturn today, just four hours after Mercury’s ingress, so start by looking at the situation that seems hopelessly stuck or at the person who refuses to change anything. Therein lies the challenge. Mars will reach revolutionary Uranus by trine at the weekend, so change is on its way, ready or not, and Mercury gets in on the act with a square to Pluto and an opposition to Uranus. The latter won’t be exact until next Monday morning but will make its presence known during the previous 24 hours. If you have to have a gloves off argument with someone then it might be the only way. Mercury in Libra will be cringing in the corner but Venus in Scorpio will secretly relish the chance to bring hidden issues out into the open.

What’s happening this week?

One of the most important ways that we make sense of the astrological picture is to note aspects. What are these? Aspects are the nature of the relationship formed between two planets as they align with each other. The major aspects fall into two groups:

 Harmonious aspects:

·        Conjunction – reaching the same degree in the same sign

·        Trine – reaching the same degree but 4 signs apart

·        Sextile – reaching the same degree but 2 signs apart

Inharmonious aspects:

·        Oppositions – reaching the same degree in opposite signs

·        Squares – reaching the same degree but 3 signs apart

There are also a whole stack of what are referred to as the minor aspects, and one of these is in action at the beginning of this week – the awkwardly named “quinqunx”, sometimes also called the “inconjunct”. This aspect takes shape when two planets are 5 signs apart, and is indeed awkward in nature, symbolizing a mismatch, a blind spot, a sort of “ne’er the twain shall meet”.

Mars is quinqunx Neptune in the early hours of Tuesday morning, and the Sun is quinqunx Uranus in the early hours of Wednesday morning. I could speculate endlessly about what these might mean but the main message is that there will be more to an uncomfortable situation than meets the eye or that incompatibility issues will need to be addressed. Avoid finding the hat and making it fit, get a niggling health issue properly checked out and don’t plough on regardless with any matter that doesn’t feel right. Intuition can be a wonderful thing.

Moving on, the rest of the week is more straightforward. A minor aspect between Mercury and Venus (helpful or loving talks, info, agreements that pave the way to better things) in the early hours of Thursday is followed by the New Moon in Virgo (when the Sun and the Moon unite in the same sign, exact at 12.37 BST). As I said last week this sign is known for perfectionism, a characteristic that is linked to Virgo’s rulership of skills and crafts. Such expertise requires patience and painstaking exactitude, a typical Virgo’s forte, and in this area their discrimination, precision and keen eye for detail come into their own.

New Moons, new starts – anything that takes a leaf out of Virgo’s book will fit the bill. Perfecting a skill, learning new ones, analyzing what your job or business needs, committing to a new project or establishing healthy or industrious routines all capture the right vibe.

Benefic Jupiter supports this New Moon, with the Sun sextile Jupiter exact on Saturday (14.48 BST). Jupiter is the planet of good fortune and rules learning, education, law and justice, long distance travel and all things foreign. His principle is expansion – anything that stretches you, or liberates you, will make your world a bigger and better place. In brief, ideas or opportunities that surface during the second half of the week will be good for you. Finally remember to ask not just what, but who is good for you? Look out for the arrival of a new face, especially someone with the particular skills that you need, someone who can lift you out of the tangled web of details and see the bigger picture.
